Open drainage system for conveying Kolkata’s storm and dry water flow to their respective outfalls The city itself has a network of underground drainage pipes, as mentioned above, but as the flow is directed eastwards, these are discharged into open surface drains. Some of the drains are within the city, but there are three major drains, rather canals, that drain the entire city discharge into the River Kultigang, about 35 kms from the city. There are a couple of other drainage channels that flush out a portion of the city’s water to River Hooghly. A brief description of each of these channels are given in this section. The Northern part of the city discharges about 300 cusecs (8.50 cumecs ) of water under normal rainfall into Bagjola Khal through several pumping stations, for the southernmost areas like Behala, Garden Reach, the drainage is effected in river Hooghly through Churial Khal, Manikhali Khal, Tolly's Nullah etc. though the tidal effect in Hooghly river causes considerable period of blockage during drainage time. Similarly, the city's main drainage outfall system, viz. SWF channel consisting of SHC and THC, which outfall into river Kulti about 35 KM from Ballygunge Pumping Station is also a tidal one, the drainage can be effected only for 51/2 hours in every 12 hour cycle on an average. Moreover, the SWF system mainly catering city drainage in course of its long journey, also receives drainage water from city contiguous part and also from rural and urban areas. The domain of drainage under SWF system from the metropolis of Kolkata and the rural areas may be summarised as in the following table.
