in Dentistry
Comparison Chart:
Laser vs Traditional Methods
Lasers have revolutionized the way doctors practice dentistry. Dental
professionals who use lasers perform more procedures, in less time, with
better results than those using traditional methods. Their patients also
benefit from a higher standard of care, experiencing faster treatment and
healing times with less overall discomfort.
Compared to traditional methods and surgical devices such as
electrocautery, a laser is gentler, more predictable, and often times will
not require local anesthetic. Diode lasers cut with a very small zone of
necrosis, allowing you to perform a wide array of soft-tissue procedures
with little to no discomfort, no fear of gingival recession, and rapid
healing. Immediate hemostasis in most cases is another added benefit.
Are you tired of waiting for passive eruption or referring soft-tissue
cases out? Discus Dental diode lasers provide an excellent soft-tissue
management alternative. With a laser, you can easily and painlessly
expose cuspids, treat hyperplasia, and address other soft-tissue needs
without local anesthesia or postoperative pain.
Every Discus laser is manufactured in California to the highest of quality
standards. Training/certification is included at no cost. Your patients will
appreciate that you use the latest technologies to deliver the highest
standard of care.
We hope you can use this laser catalog to learn more about all the
exciting applications and advantages a laser can bring to your practice.
General Dentistry Applications
Laser Troughing Power (W): 1.2 Mode: Continuous Tip: Initiated
Laser troughing all but eliminates one of the most frustrating, unpredictable and
time-consuming procedures in the dental office – packing retraction cord. By
using a Discus Dental diode laser, you are able to obtain bloodless impressions
with clearly exposed margins within seconds. There is no concern that the
instrument will inadvertently come in contact with adjacent metal restorations
and shock the patient, as occurs with the use of electrocautery. Lasing improves
visualization of prepared crown margins and aids in hemostasis so crowns and
bridges are sure to fit properly every time. Another advantage is that tissues
look great at the cementation appointment without recession.
Gingivectomy Power (W): 1.2 Mode: Continuous Tip: Initiated
Redundant or hyperplastic tissue can be removed within a bloodless field, with
minimal — or no — post-operative pain. The outcome increases the length of
the clinical crown for improved restoration retention and esthetic harmony.
Compared to traditional surgical techniques, this procedure can be done
without a scalpel or sutures, establishing ideal tissue architecture without post
operative shrinkage. Final impressions for restorations can be completed in the
same appointment, leading to predictable results time after time.
Perio (LAPT)
Laser assisted periodontal therapy (LAPT) improves phase I periodontal therapy
and is used as an adjunct to traditional scaling and root planing, in order to
reduce pocket depths. A diode laser allows for a non-surgical approach, gaining
easier access to deeper calculus deposits after ablation of diseased epithelium
and hemorrhage control. Laser energy selectively targets only darker, necrotic
tissue and leaves healthy tissue alone, allowing for better healing and results.
General Dentistry Applications
Implant Recovery Power (W): 1.6 Mode: Continuous Tip: Initiated
A diode laser allows for quick, easy, and safe removal of excessive gingival
tissue around the implant that might otherwise interfere with proper
seating at the implant/retainer interface. Retainers that are not fully
seated can eventually become loosened by occlusal forces — resulting in
unstable restorations. Because laser energy is simply light energy, there
is no fear of sparking or heat transferring to the implant causing it to fail.
Laser energy will only affect soft-tissue when used properly.
Frenectomy Power (W): 1.2 Mode: Continuous Tip: Initiated
A diode laser allows for bloodless and suture-free release of the maxillary
and/or mandibular frenums. This procedure prevents the apical migration
of gingival marginal tissue, improves access for oral hygiene, and can help
close orthodontic diastemas and impaired speech.
Class V Power (W): 1.2 Mode: Continuous Tip: Initiated
A diode laser provides the practitioner with clear and uncontaminated access to restore class V defects, even where
lesions may occur sub-gingivally. Use of the laser allows access to lesions without having to deal with undesirable gingival
sulcus contaminants and interstitial fluids. The technique employs a non-surgical approach for ablation of diseased
epithelium at the gingival margins and provides excellent hemorrhage control.
Operculectomy Power (W): 1.4 Mode: Continuous Tip: Initiated
A diode laser allows for easy removal of redundant soft tissue distal
to posterior molars. The chronic recurrence of pericornitis, significant
periodontal probing depths or pseudo-pockets can be easily managed
with this procedure.
Call (800) 217-8822 to learn more and schedule an in-office demo.
Orthodontic Applications
Cuspid Exposure Power (W): 1.0 Mode: Continuous Tip: Initiated
Waiting on the completion of passive eruption can delay treatment
for months to a year. Parents often don’t understand the cause
of the delay, or reject the additional expense of a trip to the oral
surgeon. A diode laser can easily remove tissue and provide access
for bracket attachment without the need for local anesthesia. The
procedure usually takes less than 4 minutes and is painless, with the
result being a dry field that is ready for immediate bracket/button
attachment. That’s right, a bloodless and painless laser procedure
that takes 4 minutes can save you months to a year on overall
treatment time!
Hyperplasia Power (W): 1.2 Mode: Continuous Tip: Initiated
Gingival overgrowth and pseudopocket formation as a result of
poor oral hygiene in orthodontic patients is far too common.
This can lead to plaque-retention problems, increased treatment
times, and unhappy patients and parents with what is ultimately a
less-than-desirable cosmetic result. These problems rarely resolve
themselves, and a referral to the cosmetic dentist or oral surgeon
often gets ignored. A diode laser will allow you to precisely and
effectively remove the pseudopockets and perform gingival
contouring to improve aesthetics and oral hygiene, all without
local anesthesia, discomfort, or bleeding.
ABSORPTION CURVES
Discus Lasers
Optimized laser wavelength for superior results
Using lasers on soft tissue
The key to efficacy relies on the pigmentation in soft-tissue. At the
lower wavelengths, (e.g. 810 nm) there is a higher attraction of the laser
energy to hemoglobin and melanin.
Discus lasers are optimized to achieve the most beneficial results by
targeting the peak of the hemoglobin absorption curve at 810 nm.
This maximizes hemostasis and, in turn, eliminates bleeding.
Discus lasers have higher affinity (or
attraction) to hemoglobin and melanin, thus
promoting faster, better coagulation to
minimize bleeding and improve healing time.
or cuspid exposure, it is the ideal tool
for soft-tissue management. Compared
to traditional surgical devices such as
electrocautery, a laser is gentler, more
predictable, and often times will not require
local anesthetic. If you want to provide your
patients with a higher standard of care while
improving your bottom line, add a laser to
“ Orthodontists have long been
challenged with soft tissue problems
associated with treatment. Short clinical
crowns prevent ideal bracket placement
and compromise the effectiveness of
aligner treatment. Delayed eruption
of teeth often results in excessive
appointments and extended treatment
times. And excessive gingival display and
uneven gingival margins can turn even
the nicest treated case into one that falls
short aesthetically. It’s no exaggeration
to say I couldn’t practice without a soft
tissue laser, especially my NV laser from
Discus. Its extremely small size and light
weight make it a superstar of portability
that can handle every soft tissue
procedure with ease!
