Raw material and mobility<br />

<strong>The</strong> 28 findspots with evidence <strong>of</strong> Creswellian activity consist mainly <strong>of</strong> collections <strong>from</strong> <strong>ca</strong>ve<br />

sites in the west and mid-central limestone areas <strong>of</strong> England and Wales, but there is increasing<br />

evidence for open-air activity both in these regions and in flatter areas further east (Figure 2.3).<br />

In <strong>ca</strong>ses where such evidence has been searched for, the preferred raw materials seem to have<br />

been good quality flints <strong>ca</strong>pable <strong>of</strong> producing long, straight blades, rather than lo<strong>ca</strong>l rocks <strong>of</strong><br />

mixed or unpredictable quality.
