[This important document 13 <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> possession <strong>of</strong> llr. Scrymgeour-Wedderbutn at Birkhill. It is<br />

endorsed "10 t)ec 1778, Hegi.itered <strong>in</strong> tlie Books <strong>of</strong> Ses-sion as a probative writ," hav<strong>in</strong>g l)een so registered<br />

by Alexander t?crymgeour-\Vedderburn <strong>of</strong> <strong>Wedderburn</strong>, when he first tliought <strong>of</strong> prov<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> peerage claim.<br />

It is now mounted on l<strong>in</strong>en and <strong>the</strong> edges bound with green silk, <strong>in</strong> order to preserve it. In size it is llj<br />

<strong>in</strong>ches wide by 14^ <strong>in</strong>ches long. It is <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> handwrit<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> time, except tlie words here given <strong>in</strong>italics,<br />

which are written <strong>in</strong> a pla<strong>in</strong>ly and ra<strong>the</strong>r larger hand. In <strong>the</strong> first two l<strong>in</strong>es <strong>the</strong> n <strong>in</strong> "John" and <strong>the</strong><br />

( and <strong>in</strong> " lords <strong>of</strong> " are covered with a good sized blot, appparently <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> same age as <strong>the</strong> \vrit<strong>in</strong>g.]
