from his nephew, Mr. James <strong>Wedderburn</strong>. notiiry and clerk <strong>of</strong> Dundre, while on ono<br />

or two oc<strong>ca</strong>sions he is <strong>ca</strong>lled elder to dist<strong>in</strong>y;uish him from his o<strong>the</strong>r nephew and<br />

namesake. James, son <strong>of</strong> David AVedderburu (ante, pp. 109-10;, e.;/., 17 Dec. 1621<br />

(D.P.B. 426 a). 1 He lived <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Overgait<strong>of</strong> Dundee, <strong>in</strong> a house lou^ identified by<br />

a panel on its front, bear<strong>in</strong>g his arms and <strong>the</strong> date 1 642. It was, however, rebuilt<br />

<strong>in</strong> 1877 and <strong>the</strong> arms were a good deal spoilt <strong>in</strong> recutt<strong>in</strong>g.-<br />

He died <strong>in</strong> 1644 and by his will, dated at Dundee 4 April <strong>in</strong> that 3-ear and<br />

confirmed at Brech<strong>in</strong> 1 June 1648, left various legacies to his nephews and nieces<br />

and <strong>the</strong>ir children, as well as 400 mcrks for a silver bas<strong>in</strong> for <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> kirk <strong>of</strong><br />

Dundee, which bas<strong>in</strong> was to be engraved with <strong>the</strong> names and arms <strong>of</strong> himself and<br />

his wife and an <strong>in</strong>scription to be decided on by his great nejihew. Blackness<br />

(Br.T. 13). This bas<strong>in</strong>, " wayand thrie pundis and ten unce," was given to <strong>the</strong><br />

kirk for "<strong>the</strong> use and behailf <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sacrament <strong>of</strong> bajitisme " 10 Aug. 1616 (S.W.<br />

29 •) by his nephew Alexander (only son <strong>of</strong> his immediate elder bro<strong>the</strong>r Robert),<br />

who was, as we have seen, his executor and heir retomed, 27 .N'uv. 1646 (.S.W. 29.') ;<br />

D.B.R. 453 ; R.H. 22). He was buried <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Honlloi Dumhe, at <strong>the</strong> fo.it <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

old west wall, along <strong>the</strong> cornice <strong>of</strong> which <strong>the</strong> words "Jacobus <strong>Wedderburn</strong> dec(e.«sit)"<br />

are still legible, <strong>the</strong> rest <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>scription be<strong>in</strong>g effaced by <strong>the</strong> mumunent erected<br />

iu 1718 by Alexander Dun<strong>ca</strong>n <strong>of</strong> Lundie to his fa<strong>the</strong>r and mo<strong>the</strong>r.*<br />

He. married about 1.^95-96 Crist<strong>in</strong>a Lovell, daughter <strong>of</strong> William Lovell<br />

<strong>in</strong> Murroes (by his wife, ^Margaret Roche). They are first named iu a decree <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>ir favour 14 May l.')96 (D.BR 'iOS) and next, 12 .May I5'.i7, <strong>in</strong> a settlement<br />

made <strong>in</strong> view <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir late marriage (D.P.B 311). O<strong>the</strong>r references to th.-m and<br />
