Blackness, lial<strong>in</strong>dean, and Gosford, <strong>ca</strong>nnot have been boni much after 1400, as, apart fmiu<br />

his matriculation at S. Andrew's, his son Alexander was appo<strong>in</strong>ted clerk <strong>of</strong> Dundee <strong>in</strong> \')')~<br />

and as he was <strong>the</strong>n probably past his majority, we must assume him to iiavo been born alxjut<br />

1530. Robert is probably to be identified with <strong>the</strong> person <strong>of</strong> his name wiio matrieidatcd<br />

at S. Andrew's <strong>in</strong> 1500-6, and took his degrees <strong>the</strong>re <strong>in</strong> 1509 and 151) (.S.A.IC. 3),<br />

so that, on this ground also, he must have been born about 1490. lie was admitted a<br />

burgess <strong>of</strong> Dundee, by <strong>the</strong> liberty <strong>of</strong> his fa<strong>the</strong>r, 10 Oct. 15IG (1) L.i5. 2\ and is frcpientlv<br />

named <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Dundee records as Robert <strong>Wedderburn</strong>, elder, from 152.'{ on.'-' He was a<br />

noUry <strong>the</strong>re, and is <strong>of</strong>ten so designed. Thus, 25 March 152:3, liobert <strong>Wedderburn</strong>, elder,<br />

notary, is a witness (D.C 12); 26 Feb. 1524, Mr. Robert <strong>Wedderburn</strong>, notarv i>ubliei<br />

witnesses a grant made at Teal<strong>in</strong>g (G.S.R. 12) ; while, 20 .Sept. 1525, lie is a^'aiu notarv ami<br />

appends hi-< symbol (D.C. 13, and see facsimi/e Vol, ii., at p. 187). He mav be <strong>the</strong> Dmii<strong>in</strong>us<br />

Robert <strong>Wedderburn</strong> who is among various chapla<strong>in</strong>s and notaries witne^siii;; a grant at<br />

Dundee 14 -Ian. 152S (GSR. 15), and <strong>the</strong>re are several o<strong>the</strong>r references, which mav bo<br />

to him, from 1525 34."<br />

In 1540 he bought !i North Rsittonraw land from his bro<strong>the</strong>r, James <strong>Wedderburn</strong><br />

(S.W. 1 1), ami, 1 April 1547, acquired from his nephew Robert, son <strong>of</strong> .bimes, a charter<br />

<strong>of</strong> a North Murraygait land <strong>in</strong> favour <strong>of</strong> himself and his wife, Janet Kyd (S.W. I'j).<br />

These documents are <strong>of</strong> value as plac<strong>in</strong>g bis parentage beyond doubt, and alNO .as id<strong>in</strong>tifv<strong>in</strong>g<br />

him with <strong>the</strong> grandfa<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong> Alexander <strong>Wedderburn</strong>, first <strong>of</strong> K<strong>in</strong>gennie, who li.xsemli'rsi.il<br />

<strong>the</strong> latter charter with <strong>the</strong> words, " .My gudsyris evidentis <strong>of</strong> ye laml <strong>in</strong> ye Munavtrait"<br />

(see facsimile Vol. ii., opp. p. 5). From 1550 on, Robert <strong>Wedderburn</strong>, gourrallv <strong>ca</strong>ilod<br />

elder, is <strong>of</strong>ten named. Thus, 24 Nov. 1550, he is a witness (D.lJ.li. 25c) ; 20 .\prd l."i5l,<br />

he is on an <strong>in</strong>quest for serv<strong>in</strong>g Peter Froster (no doubt a cous<strong>in</strong>), lieir to liis f.itber ( D.Ii. R.<br />

1557, he is named <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> gift <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> clerkship to his son Alexander ( D.C. 25 ; I).T.( ; 10 n)<br />
