PREFACE.<br />

XV<br />

spent many months iti Dundee. The result <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir and my own researches Pi-efaco.<br />

fills <strong>the</strong> second volume <strong>of</strong> this <strong>book</strong>, <strong>the</strong> evidence collected <strong>in</strong> which falls<br />

<strong>in</strong>to three divisions, viz., Private Records ; Burgh Records, Dundee<br />

; and<br />

Public Records <strong>in</strong> Scotland and <strong>in</strong> London. In each <strong>ca</strong>se I have prefaced<br />

<strong>the</strong> extracts given with a short note on <strong>the</strong> general nature <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> records,<br />

which need not be re-stated here. Bat I desire to aga<strong>in</strong> acknowledge mv<br />

obligations to Mr. Henry Scrymgeour-<strong>Wedderburn</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Wedderburn</strong>, who<br />

allowed me <strong>the</strong> fullest possible access to his charter chests; and to Sir<br />

William <strong>Wedderburn</strong>, Bart., who gave me similar facilities <strong>in</strong> regard to his<br />

papers. These two collections were, <strong>of</strong> course, <strong>the</strong> most important private<br />

repositories, and conta<strong>in</strong> tlie documents relat<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> K<strong>in</strong>o-ennie and<br />

Blackness l<strong>in</strong>es. I much regret not to have had access to "<strong>the</strong> family<br />

papers <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> possession <strong>of</strong> Sir P. A. Halkett at Pitfirrane, thougli I have<br />

(with his assent) been able to quote some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m at second hand. But<br />

although his charter chest would probably have conta<strong>in</strong>ed much <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>terest<br />

<strong>in</strong> regard to members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> most junior l<strong>in</strong>e <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Wedilerburns, that <strong>of</strong><br />

Gosford, it is not probable that among its documents would be found any<br />

writs throw<strong>in</strong>g light on <strong>the</strong> early <strong>history</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> family <strong>in</strong> Dundee, or on<br />

that <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> senior branches <strong>of</strong> K<strong>in</strong>gennie, <strong>Wedderburn</strong>, and Blackness.<br />

My thanks are also due to Major Seton <strong>of</strong> Mounie for permission to<br />

make free use <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> papers <strong>in</strong> his possession relat<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> family <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

second baronet <strong>of</strong> Blackness, from whose wife's bro<strong>the</strong>r Major Seton descends;<br />

to <strong>the</strong> librarians <strong>of</strong> S. Andrew's University and <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Advo<strong>ca</strong>te's Library<br />

at Ed<strong>in</strong>burgh, and especially to <strong>the</strong> late Mr. Alexander Lamb, <strong>the</strong> enthusiastic<br />

antiquarian and lover <strong>of</strong> his native town <strong>of</strong> Dundee, for liis permiission to<br />

make use <strong>of</strong> David <strong>Wedderburn</strong>'s Compt Bulk, and for all manner <strong>of</strong> k<strong>in</strong>dly<br />

help.<br />

For my access to <strong>the</strong> Burgh Records <strong>of</strong> Dundee I have to thank <strong>the</strong><br />

Town Council for <strong>the</strong> permission to search, and <strong>the</strong> Town Chamhorla<strong>in</strong> and<br />

his subord<strong>in</strong>ates at <strong>the</strong> Town House for constant courtesy to myself and mv<br />

agents. The search <strong>the</strong>re was full <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>terest. In <strong>the</strong> charter room <strong>of</strong><br />

Dundee are preserved tlie old protocol <strong>book</strong>s <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Wcddeiburns, clerks <strong>of</strong><br />

Dundee, conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g, chiefly <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir own handwrit<strong>in</strong>g, material for <strong>the</strong> <strong>history</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>mselves and <strong>the</strong> town. I hope that, some
