It is from S. Andrew's, IGUS-l'G, ihut most <strong>of</strong> his letters to .Meric Casaubon are<br />

\n:itteD, but he seems to have come south a-a<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> last-named vear, as, 8 Feb. 16-^6<br />

he was appo<strong>in</strong>ted rector <strong>of</strong> Compton <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> diocese <strong>of</strong> W<strong>in</strong>chester (Rymers Fotd'era<br />

VIII. II. 1G5), as well as Canon <strong>of</strong> Kly {lliM. Cith. Ely), be<strong>in</strong>g colh.tod to his stall before<br />

Christmas <strong>in</strong> that year. At <strong>the</strong> same time ho reta<strong>in</strong>ed his pr<strong>of</strong>essorship <strong>in</strong> St. Andrew's<br />

as he is so designed 25 Oct. 1G26 <strong>in</strong> a commission by <strong>the</strong> K<strong>in</strong>g to him and o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

persons "pro exploratione papistarum" ((;..S.H. 99). On 12 Sept. 162S <strong>the</strong> K<strong>in</strong>o,<br />

presented him to <strong>the</strong> vi<strong>ca</strong>rage <strong>of</strong> .Mildonhail, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> diocese <strong>of</strong> Norwich {Rmn. FreH<br />

VIII. iii. 28 and lli^t. Cath. Kly.), while <strong>in</strong> 10:51 lie be<strong>ca</strong>me i)rebcndary <strong>of</strong> W'hitcluircll<br />

m <strong>the</strong> church <strong>of</strong> Wells (tbH, and IIV„/-,v Fasti O.ron). On 14 Oct. 1635 he had a<br />

royal grant <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> De.aiery <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Chajiel lloyal <strong>in</strong> Stirl<strong>in</strong>g, and <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> lands<br />

monastery, and barony <strong>of</strong> Drumdrennane iCJ.S.ll. lOS ; ll.l'.S. :Vj.), a gift which was soon<br />

followed by his appo<strong>in</strong>tment, <strong>in</strong> succession to Bishop Beilendcn, as Bi.shop <strong>of</strong> Dunblane<br />

11 Feb. 1G;36 (G.S.ll. 109). It is .said that he was ajipo<strong>in</strong>ted on <strong>the</strong> nom<strong>in</strong>ation <strong>of</strong><br />

Archbishop Laud, who had long favoured him " as a churchman <strong>of</strong> whoso devotion to <strong>the</strong><br />

Here <strong>the</strong> writer confuses John <strong>of</strong> iloravia with Sir John <strong>of</strong> Gosfonl. There is also an account <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Bishop <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Fasti Feci. Scot. ii. 840, where it is said that he |iublished " A Treatise for<br />

Reconciliatiou." This account cites as its authorities Keith's Bishops ; Iteg. I'res and Old Dec. ; Kii-k<br />

})apers ; Beutham's Ely ; Acts <strong>of</strong> Assembly ; and BaiUie.s' Letters.<br />
