Domestic Abuse and Stalking in the Workplace
Would you know the signs?
Or what your legal obligations are?
In England and Wales domestic abuse costs £1.9billion a year in lost economic
output. This is due to decreased productivity, administration difficulties from
unplanned time off, lost wages and sick pay. Domestic abuse can impact negatively
on and employees health and wellbeing. It can impact on staff morale as well as
organisational image and reputation.
With research showing that 1 in 4 women will experience domestic abuse at some
point in their lifetime, it is likely that all workplaces have staff that have or are
experiencing abuse as well those who are perpetrators.
Developing an effective workplace policy is essential.
In Partnership with the Police and Crime Commissioner, the Hollie Gazzard Trust is
holding a free conference for all businesses in Gloucestershire. Speakers include:
Richard Berry, Gloucestershire Police Assistant Chief Constable
Polly Neate, CEO Women’s Aid
Fiona Bowman, Stalking survivor
HOLIDAY PREPARATIONS
NAILS - SKIN - HAIR - TAN
It’s that time of year when we are all worrying about preparing ourselves for our
holidays. Our hands and feet need some care, our skin needs smoothing and our hair
needs removing!
I have written some tips and ideas for you based on the most popular (and important)
holiday preparation treatments at my salon.
MANICURES AND PEDICURES
Any TLC for hands and feet is appreciated by our skin and nails! Over the winter we
do tend to neglect our hands and feet as they are covered and hidden by woolly
gloves and big cosy boots. But now is the time to start treating them well! Basic or
luxury nail care treatments are available and why not try the extremely popular and
newest addition to our nail care options - GELERATION. It is a new and kind system of
gel polish, long lasting and hard wearing in a range of beautiful colours.
(prices range from £10 to £30)
BODY SCRUBS
We are able to offer a choice of deliciously scented scrubs. The salts in our Chocolate
Orange or Green Tea and Mint scrubs remove dry/ dead skin to reveal smoother,
softer skin perfect for holiday prep and perfect treatments to ensure your skin is
glowing and sun tanning ready! (Body scrubs £20)
WAXING
That hair needs removing before your holiday. Although waxing may not be the most
pleasant on our list of treatments it definitely is worth it. If you have waxing on a
regular basis, because the hairs re removed right from the root, they will eventually
start to grow back much less and much finer - meaning you will end up spreading
appointments out much more meaning less maintenance. (Hooray!) And if done
before a holiday any hairs that may grow back while away should be lightened by the
sun anyway so it’s a win-win!! (Waxing ranges from £5 to £25)
SPRAY TANS
Who wants to go away feeling pasty and pale? No-one, is the answer. Everyone feels
better with a tan so it’s a very popular treatment to have as part of holiday prep. A
full body subtle spray of tan to suit your colouring will make you feel much more
comfortable and happy in your bikini. Sun care is still needed but at least while
your natural tan is building your gorgeous artificial spray is protecting you from
the dreaded lily white insecurities! Available in three different shades and also an
express tan option. (Spray tans are £20)
MARIA’S TOP TIP:
Extend your holiday time by using the week before you go to really prepare your
body, with the treatments that will help you feel better on that beach. It’s all about
that HOLIDAY PREP girls!!! …… Have a great summer and enjoy your holidays! x

Maria Young
Beauty Editor for Unique
12 13
Hello my name is Maria Young. I am a business owner and beauty therapist. I qualified
in 2009 and have been passionate about making others feel good ever since.
When leaving school I was unsure of what I wanted to do for a career so I ended up
choosing beauty because my best friend was doing it. Thank goodness I did because
I can’t imagine doing anything else. Throughout school I was made to feel unhappy
about my size and my looks, I was picked on and at times very unhappy in my own skin
but now that I have experienced the job satisfaction you get from making others feel
good. Perhaps I should thank those bullies because that negativity may be exactly what
planted my passion for making people feel the opposite way.
There is nothing better than knowing you have
brightened someone’s day, made them feel
good or more happy with them self. To know
that person is walking out of my salon feeling
better in some way than when they came in
really warms my heart.
I started off working for a company called Clarins
where I was put on very exclusive training in
London. I was then a skincare and makeup
consultant for them as well as building up clientele locally by doing treatments for
people at home. I went from Clarins to working in different Spa Hotels and also covering
for local salons while my local clientele kept gradually building. Eventually I was able to
go it alone and rent rooms within a salon. The business grew to a point where I needed
more space and took on staff.
From the point of leaving college, and while I was working and proving my dedication
to my business, I had contacted Bells Hotel in Coleford. It took me years to get them
to listen to my ideas. But it eventually paid off and now I have a beautiful salon within
the hotel, where we have four treatment rooms,
our own reception area, facilities for packages
including afternoon teas and a wonderful team
of talented therapists who share my passion
with me.
It took me five years to be here and I am nowhere near my goal but it is always good
to see progress and I love that others can share it all with me. I am very honoured to
be asked to be writing for Unique and will be providing you regularly with some of my
favourite health and beauty tips, I hope you enjoy the read! :)
Best wishes
Maria
x
I have received four regional business awards
and am selected again this year. When I first
started my business I remember looking at the
achievements of others and wanting to be a part
of it and now I am in my own right.
I was referred to LNH Management Solutions when
looking to setup a new business venture. I’ve been very
pleased with the time Lee initially spent with me advising
on the business structure and helping with all of the
necessary set-up and registration requirements. Since
this, Lee regularly keeps contact to ensure the business is
running smoothly and has always been available to offer
his support in a personal and approachable manner. I’ve
been highly impressed with his services and would have
no hesitation in recommending him to other small businesses.
people’s kitchens and bathrooms. Bathroom
company have told me they do so as the
project management is excellent, her
Dear Chris and Caroline, Thank you again for the
outstanding service. As you know, I had a specific
idea in mind which had some unusual features.
I did not feel confident that the first company I
approached could achieve the design I wanted
after their repeated failure to provide a drawing
to my specifications. In contrast you provided the
drawing I needed quickly and efficiently which,
together with your professional and caring
approach, left me in no doubt about placing an
order with you. My mother and I are delighted
with the stone, and I know my father would have
liked it. It’s funny but it seems so appropriate for
him, with its height, slim width and stylish
features. I hope I can equal your high standards
in the small planting area in front of the stone
with my flowers.
You both do such an important job and you do it
extremely well.
The Everyman
Behind The Scenes
18 19
I was one of the lucky 15 people to have the opportunity on Friday 24th April to see
behind the scenes at The Everyman Theatre in Cheltenham. John our tour guide rounded
us up and took us upstairs to Matchams bar area as he went through the history of
both Everyman Theatre and Frank Matcham the architect who designed and built The
Everyman where it is today.
Frank Matcham was born in 1854 in Newton Abbott and his first theatre project was The
Elephant and Castle in London. The Everyman Theatre was built in 1891, but most of
you wouldn’t know is that the first theatre in Cheltenham was based where Lloyds TSB
is now in the High Street and was called the Assembly Rooms. When Frank Matcham
started the project it was decided by the backers that it would
now be built in Regent Street.
Stage
John then took us out into the theatre itself and we could see the
set of Rebecca which was on Thursday
evening it was eerily quiet but you could
really see the theatres beauty. Then we
were on the stage itself which was very
intimate we got to feel like how the actors
and actresses felt when they perform as
you could see every face clearly.
Then we got to see the props from Rebecca including the brilliant
puppet dog from the show, cigarettes and lanterns. The whole
behind the scenes layout was like a military operation, everything
had its place. John the tour guide again asked if there were any
questions, and he had the answers for
all of them. We then got to see the scene dock where all the
equipment is kept and also miniature show sets so the producer
and main protagonists could plan the layout and show itself.
Wardrobe Department
John spoke in depth about the many different costumes from
pantomimes including Jack and The Beanstalk, we then went
into two of the dressing rooms which were all fitted out with
showers for the actors.
We were then taken up to The Fly Floor where
the Flyman operates all the curtains, props
and in the case of Rebecca a boat, it was a
good job none of us had real height issues as
we were up with the gods.
Studio
Then John finally showed us into the
studio where small productions and music
productions are performed, John also
explained that originally the studio was
used for rehearsals. It really was a great
opportunity to see behind the scenes of the
Everyman and I really enjoyed it and would
certainly recommend it.

Pay It Forward
So many companies now understand the importance of being kind. Traditionally
businesses have always been focused on gaining customers and growing their
business by using hard-hitting sales campaigns and measuring strict ROI. But what
a wealth of forward thinking companies, such as Waitrose and Pret A Manger now
understand is the added benefit to their business by just being kind.
Pret A Manger, the leading snack retailer now allow their staff to give away free
coffee’s to anyone they choose, ‘a simple nod to kindness to perk up somebodies
day’. They get nothing direct in return for their kindness; just a simple message. We
care. Caring about your customers and those you do business with is imperative
to growing your business in this fast moving yet kind conscious economy.
Luke Cameron
I started my own personal journey by setting up a humble blog a year and a half ago
and writing about doing ‘random acts of kindness’. A good deed for every day of the
year; a huge feat, but an endeavour I was fully commited too. I now get paid to travel
the country and assist charities, doing ‘good deeds’ on a corporate scale. Holding
the ‘Nicest Job in Britain’ I get paid by UA, to travel the length of the UK, visiting a
different charity each week and help in whatever capacity needed. I use my skills,
knowledge and network to positively impact those charities and make a real lasting
difference to their operations. But one thing I have come to learn is that you done
have to be a charity to be philanthropic.

Unique Food
Tarragon
28 29
We were welcomed into the restaurant by our waiter for the evening - Gabor. a
delightful Hungarian waiter who was charming, friendly and attentive throughout
our meal. We noticed on arrival that Tarragon has a cosy intimate feel to it so it was
little wonder that after seven it quickly fills up with diners.
For starters I had Bruschetta with fresh tomatoes, focaccia
garnished with fresh basil leaves and my girlfriend opted
for the Crayfish with Mango and Advocado salad.
For the main course I had Braised Lamb which was tender
and succulent to taste served with spring vegetables which
consisted of carrots vitolette potatoes, duo of tomato, confit
garlic mushroom and a lamb jus. This is my first time dining
out at an International restaurant and I wasn't quite sure
what to expect but was pleasantly surprised by the quality
of the food.
base was thick and once my girlfriend saw the gratification on my face she decided
to ask Gabor for a spoon and dived in commenting that it was the best cheese cake
she had ever tried, I have to say I agreed, I am not usually
a fan of cheesecake as I sometimes find it too heavy but
this certainly was not the case here.
On the whole we really enjoyed our visit to The Tarragon
and although there isn't a large choice on the menu there
is something to suit every palate. The prices are a bit on
the expensive side with a main dish starting out at £16.00
but the quality of the food really does justify the cost. For
those of you with less money to spend you could opt for
the early bird menu which offers two courses for £15.95
or three courses for £19.95 between Monday-Thursday
5pm -7pm. Well done The Tarragon.
The other main was the
marinated supreme of chicken, served with boulangerie
potato, baby shallots, confit garlic, girolle mushroom and
puree of spinach and carrot with a red wine reduction.
The boulangere potatoes were layered and delicately
seasoned with fresh thyme and went perfectly with the
chicken. The dish was beautifully presented and very
colourful.
To book, call Tarragon on 01242 525230 and
check out their website:
www.tarragonrestaurant.com
15 Montpellier Street, GL50 1SW Cheltenham,
Gloucestershire
Still room for the dessert, my
girlfriend opted out as she
said she was full to bursting, I
went for the baked strawberry
cheesecake with strawberry
three ways. When it arrived I was pleasantly surprised at
how big the portion slice was, I loved the presentation, it
was served on a black slate platter with a dusting of icing
sugar with fresh strawberries on either side and fresh mint
for decoration. The cheesecake had a luxurious yoghurt
like texture to it and was absolutely divine, the digestive

Unique Football The Robins
41
@CTFCofficial
So here we are Robins fans with just two games left, with the Robins in
23rd place and one point behind Hartlepool in 22nd place. Unfortunately
Cheltenham haven’t made the most out of their last four games as we only
managed one 3 - 1 Win against Cambridge. The good news is that Gary Johnson
is now at the helm now so we may be able to pick up some points and hope
Hartlepool slip up.
Our last game saw us go down 2-0 away to Northampton Cobblers forward
Ivan Toney finished Lawson D’Ath’s left-wing cross to score his 10th of the season
and Marc Richards’
right-foot strike sealed victory for the hosts.
New Cheltenham Town manager Gary Johnson told BBC Radio Gloucestershire:
“If you don’t play with any sort of quality then you’re going to get
beat, you make substitutions in the hope of changing things but not a
lot changed.
“I’m not going to get excited about five minutes of play, we didn’t have
enough play. We didn’t play enough to warrant anything today and I feel
sorry for our supporters.
got to pick that up again. It’s going to take work on the training ground and I hope
I’ve got enough time.”
The Robins last two games are Shrewsbury in Second place at Home on Saturday
25th April and last but by no means least Wimbledon in thirteenth place Away on
Saturday 2nd May.
Well the end of the season does not get any tougher than this, hopefully Gary
Johnson can fire up the lads to achieve possibly the greatest escape of his
managerial career.
