General Principles of Fire Safety<br />
<strong>The</strong> following guidelines must be followed to prevent a fire<br />
occurring on site and to ensure the safety of pupils in the event<br />
of emergency evacuation.<br />
• Pupils must familiarise themselves with the fire escape routes<br />
from the classrooms in which they are taught, to the fire assembly<br />
point (a plan showing this route is displayed in each room).<br />
• Pupils must familiarise themselves with the fire evacuation<br />
procedure (see below).<br />
• Smoking is not allowed on or around the school site.<br />
• Fire doors are kept closed (i.e. not propped open with bags<br />
or wedges).<br />
• Fire escapes routes and exit doors are kept clear and free from<br />
obstruction (including pupil bags).<br />
• Fire fighting equipment (fire extinguishers, blankets) is free<br />
from obstruction.<br />
What to do if you discover a fire<br />
• Raise the alarm by operating the nearest break glass point<br />
– these are usually found adjacent to fire exits.<br />
• Follow the evacuation procedure.<br />
• Please note fire fighting equipment is only to be used by<br />
trained members of staff.<br />
What to do if the fire alarms are activated (evacuation procedure)<br />
• Leave the building by the nearest safe exit.<br />
• Do not stop to collect belongings.<br />
• Go to the fire assembly point and line up with your form.<br />
• Wait quietly for the roll call to be taken.<br />
• Do not re-enter the buildings until instructed to do so.<br />
