Letter to the Community
The Foundation’s growth also reflects
the trust that the community has placed
in us. People bring us their aspirations,
wishes and desires. We’re the place where
all these voices are heard.
nonprofits that serve our community to the donors who
join us at different stages of life with their diverse goals,
talents and interests. We come together through the
Foundation to enhance life in this community—while
contributing in unique ways.
Ann T. Lisi, Executive Director and Ross K. Dik, President
This report of our thirty-first year, “Generations of
Philanthropy,” celebrates the interplay of people and
perspectives that continuously refreshes the Foundation
and drives its growth.
In 2006, gifts enlarged the community endowment
by $7.4 million. Last year was the strongest in the
Foundation’s history for contributions except 1988,
when gifts reached $10.9 million. And 2006 investment
earnings totaled $13.7 million, the highest of any year
except 2003, when we earned $15 million. With this
momentum, the endowment will continue to double in
size every eight years.
This growth reflects the fact that our citizen-run
model of philanthropy makes sense to a great variety
of participants, from the established and emerging
2
Our donors and grantmakers include teenagers,
professionals, parents, retirees and successor advisors
faithful to the desires of loved ones. They may be seeking
a first foothold in civic philanthropy or strive for a place
of leadership. Many come for one purpose and stay for
another: an individual may create a fund, and then join
one of the volunteer committees that steers the course of
the Foundation. Whatever their perspectives and goals,
donors and nonprofits alike find that the Foundation’s
collaborative decision-making processes respect their
differences and enable them to accomplish more than
they could on their own.
The Foundation’s growth also reflects the trust that
the community has placed in us. People bring us their
aspirations, wishes and desires. We’re the place where all
these voices are heard. We’re here, every day, listening,
learning, challenging, articulating, and responding to the
needs and opportunities of our community. Together, we
are building assets that are conducive to a good life in our
region—now and for generations to come.
Southeast Asian Coalition of Central Massachusetts
Connecting generations with a web of understanding
A circle game helps teenagers and their parents strengthen frayed bonds
Southeast Asians are the fastest-growing population in
Worcester. As they arrive, many turn to the Southeast
Asian Coalition of Central Massachusetts, whose services
encourage them to celebrate their traditions while
learning new skills.
Supported by the Foundation since its start in 2002, the
Coalition offers such programs as an annual Southeast
Asian Festival; youth leadership groups; a children’s
soccer league; ESL classes; and most recently, workshops
to resolve intergenerational conflicts.
Sessions help parents reconcile strict, family-centered
Asian practices of childrearing with values of
independence and self-expression that their children
learn at school. “We also urge our youth to learn more
about their heritage and to speak up in a way that doesn’t
hurt their parents,” says Thuha T. Le, executive director
of the Coalition.
Within the same household, parents and children often
inhabit different cultures and speak different languages.
“Most parents are working two jobs,” says Thuha. “They
may not have time for language classes, but their kids
mostly talk in English. These differences can make it
harder for parents and children to understand each
other.”
At the Coalition, families celebrate traditions while
learning new skills.
Parents learned more about their kids. At the
same time, kids got to express their gratitude
and respect for their parents.
Yet sometimes action speaks louder than words. The
Coalition’s youth group hosted an evening that brought
both generations together. The teenagers prepared dinner
for their surprised and delighted parents. After the
meal, all gathered in a circle. Each guest said something
positive about another guest and then tossed a ball of
yarn to the next speaker. Crisscrossing the circle as
it rolled from person to person, the yarn unraveled,
eventually creating a web that connected all members.
“The parents learned more about their kids,” says Thuha.
“At the same time, the kids got to express their gratitude
and respect for their parents. We had a great party and we
are planning another evening together.”
Paul and Fay Rossley Fund
Strengthening institutions that have enriched a family
A civic-minded couple finds that giving through a fund is joyful, easy and smart
Paul and Fay Rossley were born and brought up near
Worcester and, after graduating from Clark University,
they married and raised their son and daughter here.
Apart from four years overseas while Paul served in the
Air Force, the couple has lived in the area all their lives.
Many of these years were in Holden, their hometown for
36 years.
“Our lives have been rooted here since ‘day one,’” says
Fay, who taught in local elementary schools for decades.
She and Paul, a retired insurance executive, now live in
Shrewsbury and Falmouth. They have served on nonprofit
boards and as volunteers and donors they contribute
whole-heartedly to the civic, cultural, health care and
educational institutions that have enriched their lives.
“About ten years ago, we decided to bring focus to our
annual giving,” says Paul, who with Fay has numerous
philanthropic interests both within and beyond
Worcester. At the suggestion of Foundation staff, Fay and
Paul set up a donor advised fund. Now, rather than write
multiple checks each year, they simply make one annual
contribution to their fund. “And instead of donating
cash,” says Paul, “we transfer stock, deducting its full
value on our tax return and eliminating the capital gains
tax. The Foundation in turn makes grants to the some 20
different organizations of our choice, even those that are
out of state.”
The Rossleys value the knowledge and professionalism
of Foundation staff as well as the quality, flexibility and
longevity of the Foundation’s services. “Our fund grows
through our annual gifts and the excellent performance
of Foundation investments,” says Fay. “The interest
goes to the organizations that are near and dear to our
hearts—and will continue doing so in perpetuity.”
Paul and Fay Rossley visit one of their fund’s grantees,
the Joy of Music Program.
“We’ve seen nonprofits go out of business or change
their mission,” adds Paul. “The Foundation is a strong,
citizen-run organization. Its primary goal is to support
worthwhile causes. Quietly, and with little fanfare,
it does so much for so many people—donors and
service providers alike. We are proud to be part of the
Foundation.”
Rural Cemetery Fund
Sustaining a cherished sanctuary
Agency fund preserves timeless assets with 21st century investment acumen
We are impressed
with the Foundation’s
leadership as well as its
outstanding investment
performance. The
Foundation can
invest in sophisticated
instruments that are
beyond the reach of
a small nonprofit such
as ours.
John Cobill, Superintendent (left), and Trustee Harry Dewey are among
the people working to conserve the Rural Cemetery.
Close to the city yet a world apart, the Rural Cemetery is
an inviting arboretum as well as a privately owned burial
ground and crematory. The Rural Cemetery has served
generations of local families since it opened in 1838. At
that time, Worcester was a fast-growing town with just
7,000 residents. Now a population almost twice that
size—13,000 people—is at rest in the 40-acre cemetery.
With help from the investment earnings of its
endowment, the Rural Cemetery funds the perpetual
maintenance of grounds that encompass 9,000 familyowned
plots, gardens, and more than 650 trees, including
old and rare specimens.
The Rural Cemetery recently increased its capacity to
preserve these timeless assets by establishing the Rural
Cemetery Fund and transferring a substantial portion of
its endowment into this new agency fund. The nonprofit
was inspired by the example of Trumbull Barton, who left
almost $300,000 to the Foundation for the benefit of the
Rural Cemetery.
“We are impressed with the Foundation’s leadership as
well as its outstanding investment performance,” says
cemetery trustee Harry Dewey. “With an endowment
worth more than $100 million, the Foundation can invest
in sophisticated instruments that are beyond the reach of
a small nonprofit such as ours.
“We sleep better at night knowing that our funds are in
the hands of world-class experts who devote 100 percent
of their time to increasing the value of our endowment,”
continues Harry, a founding incorporator of the
Foundation and senior partner emeritus of Bowditch &
Dewey, LLP. “We are very happy with our decision and we
look forward to a long relationship with the Foundation.”
Newell and Betty Hale Fund
Inspiring young audiences with the arts
Volunteers bring world-class opera and symphony to children in rural Connecticut
Northeastern Connecticut is a picturesque community
of farms and old mill towns. But its era as an industrial
center has passed and the region’s public schools have
few resources to support cultural programs. Yet local
children enjoy an education in the performing arts that
would be the envy of wealthy communities.
Thanks to an all-volunteer organization, Performing
Arts of Northeast Connecticut, each year more than
5,000 fifth-graders in 26 towns attend free, fully staged
productions of Opera New England, the educational arm
of Boston Lyric Opera. Using a curriculum guide that
incorporates state learning standards, teachers prepare
the students for the performances, which are held at the
Hyde Cultural Center in Woodstock, Connecticut. The
company’s singers and musicians also visit the students’
classrooms. A new series for third-graders will host local
performances of the New Haven Symphony Orchestra.
“Since we started 33 years ago, our program has served
120,000 children,” says the organization’s administrator,
Betty Hale, who is also the founder and chair of the
Community Cultural Committee, a nonprofit that brings
national touring companies to the Hyde Center for
performances tailored to young students.
All programs combine the alchemy of live performance
with classroom encounters. “Children are spellbound
when they watch a splendid production or learn from
a musician,” says Betty. “These experiences can spark a
lifelong love for the arts.”
Betty in turn has a lifelong devotion to northeastern
Connecticut, which is home to three generations of the
Hale family as well as former employees. Betty’s late
husband Newell Hale established his textile company
here in 1954. The Newell and Betty Hale Fund supports
Performing Arts of Northeast Connecticut and other
local nonprofits. The Newell Hale Memorial Fund
provides meals to a soup kitchen set up by her husband.
And the Pomfret Community School Arts Fund brings
artists to the school attended by her four children and
now, her granddaughter.
Marla Maykel Fund and The Pyle Fund
Pursuing Creative Approaches to Grantmaking
A philanthropic couple uses funds to fulfill individual and joint goals
We both value the
involved giving model.
Richard and Marla Pyle jointly
support the Boys and Girls Club
of Worcester.
Richard and Marla Maykel Pyle established their donor
advised funds before becoming husband and wife. Each
brings entrepreneurial flair to philanthropy, an endeavor
that they pursue individually and as a couple.
One of Richard’s local causes is the Boys and Girls Club
of Worcester. “I grew up in Erie, Pennsylvania,” says
Richard. “Our clubhouse looked like Worcester’s old one.
I know the benefits this organization provides.”
Both Marla and Richard have served on the board of the
Club, and a joint gift from their funds is now engaging
youth groups in a fundraising contest. Teams with
the best proposals receive seed grants and compete to
raise the most money for the Club. “We both value the
involved giving model,” says Richard.
Marla’s grantees include Tower Hill Botanic Garden,
where she is a trustee; and Daybreak Resources for
Women and Children.
8
Richard introduced Marla to the Foundation by inviting
her to an annual meeting. “I was impressed with the
whole organization, from the depth of its reach in
the community to its solid research and investment
expertise,” says Marla, a real estate lawyer who graduated
from Notre Dame Academy and Holy Cross College.
“We can see the impact of our money.”
The owner of a manufacturing company, Richard finds
that the Foundation makes good business sense. “A
donor advised fund enables an individual to accomplish
a lot without the cost and labor of setting up a private
foundation,” says Richard, who also likes the ability to
separate donations from grantmaking. Such flexibility
frees his creativity while allowing the fund to grow over
time. “I make gifts when the time is right, for instance
when funds are available or when I want a tax shelter.
And I distribute funds when I can be most helpful to a
particular cause.”
Lorraine Crepeau Fund
Fulfilling a generous donor’s wishes in perpetuity
Wise estate planning enables a couple to achieve ambitious charitable goals
Lorraine and Chauncey Crepeau were people of modest
means. Chauncey worked at a local manufacturing plant
until his retirement. The couple had no children and
throughout their years together, they lived in a frugal
manner. But Lorraine always gave to charitable causes.
And when a cousin left Lorraine a sizeable inheritance,
the Crepeaus wanted charities to receive whatever
amount they did not need during their later years.
The couple sought the estate planning guidance of
Bowditch & Dewey, LLP. Their advisor was Harry Dewey,
a senior partner and one of the original incorporators
of the Foundation. The Crepeaus took his advice and
created a trust, naming the Foundation as beneficiary.
The Foundation would act as steward for their funds,
investing the principal and distributing its earnings to
their preferred causes in perpetuity.
Upon Harry’s retirement in 1994, Christopher G. Mehne
was appointed successor trustee to the Lorraine and
Chauncey Crepeau Trust. “The Crepeaus became my
friends as well as clients,” says Chris, a partner in the
firm’s estate, financial and tax planning practice as well as
a principal of B&D Advisors LLC, the firm’s investment
management subsidiary.
When Lorraine died in August 2006, eight months after
her husband, Chris worked with the Foundation to set up
the Lorraine Crepeau Fund. Its grants support Lorraine’s
chosen causes, including missions serving the poor,
research to cure diseases, environmental protection, and
animal welfare.
Chris regards the Foundation as a valuable partner. “The
Foundation’s online resources for advisors keep me up to
date on changes in tax and charitable legislation, which
I can pass on to my clients,” says Chris, a corporator
who serves on a committee that selects the Foundation’s
scholarship recipients. “Above all, the Foundation excels
at fulfilling a client’s goals. Lorraine was pleased to know
that she would provide income in perpetuity to causes
dear to her heart.”
Margaret and Gordon Torgersen Fund
Creating a community whose opportunities are open to all
Fund furthers cross-cultural understanding and youth leadership
Our parents spent their lives
seeking solutions to some of
society’s toughest problems…
In a small way, we’re carrying
on their amazing work.
Reverend and Mrs. Torgersen
served their longest pastorate
at the First Baptist Church in
Worcester, from 1951 to 1972.
Throughout their lives, the Reverend Gordon M.
Torgersen and his wife Margaret have made social justice
their family business. A renowned preacher whose
televised sermons reached audiences around the world,
Reverend Torgersen has held numerous positions of
church and civic leadership, including presidency of the
Andover Newton Theological School.
But the heart of the Torgersens’ ministry was the First
Baptist Church in Worcester, where they served their
longest pastorate, from 1951 to 1972. “Our mother
worked side by side with Dad,” says Philip G. Torgersen,
a programmer at Fidelity Investments, Inc. “They
welcomed our neighbors as well as people from all over
the world into our home.” Recalling a Japanese couple
who lived with the family after being released from
World War II internment, Philip says, “We considered
them our aunt and uncle.” Foreign students frequented
family suppers. A visitor from Zimbabwe, Reverend
Ndabaningi Sithole, entranced the Torgersens with the
vocal acrobatics of his tribe’s click language. He later
became a founder of Zimbabwe’s ruling party.
Tireless advocates for religious and racial equality, the
Torgersens encouraged diversity in people and ideas. The
compassion and intellectual curiosity that guided their
ministry also enriched their family’s daily life.
10
“Our parents spent their lives seeking solutions to some
of society’s toughest problems,” says Philip’s sister, Gail
T. Randall, special projects officer at the Foundation and
a trustee of the George I. Alden Trust. “And they trained
us to challenge our assumptions. Our father told us, ‘I
became a minister not because I had answers, but because
I had questions.’”
Philip and Gail established a donor advised fund
in honor of their parents, who are now retired and
living in Saint Petersburg, Florida. The fund supports
organizations that further cross-cultural understanding
and youth leadership. Grantees have included the
Boys and Girls Club of Worcester, the Southeast
Asian Coalition of Central Massachusetts and the
Nativity School of Worcester.
“The Foundation is the perfect vehicle for what we
want to do,” says Gail. “It’s a trusted, community-run
organization with strong ties to the many nonprofits
serving Worcester and it handles all the finances on our
behalf. Our fund enables us to invest in the community
where we grew up and where our parents gave so much.
In a small way, we’re carrying on their amazing work.”
“At the same time,” adds Philip, “we’re honoring our
parents whom we love very much.”
Charles E. Scott Community Fund
Spreading the power of community philanthropy
Fund expands reach and impact of minority donors
Each generation has its heroes, but some transcend
their time. Such a leader is Charles E. Scott, an African-
American who rose above adversities of all kinds to
achieve prominence in public service. He served on the
Worcester City Council from 1918 to 1921 and then again
from 1926 to 1937.
Former City Councilor Stacey DeBoise Luster learned
of Charles Scott when she ran for office. Inspired by her
predecessor’s achievements, Stacey created the Charles E.
Scott Community Fund in his honor. She then became
the first African-American woman to sit on the City
Council, and served two terms from 1998 to 2001.
A corporator of the Foundation, Stacey considers
philanthropy a form of empowerment. She wants her
donor advised fund to help young African-Americans
achieve prominence in philanthropy as they have in
so many other endeavors. “Charity runs deep among
African-Americans, who are grounded in churches and
community service,” says Stacey, whose five-generation
Worcester family includes her grandmother, Lillian
Ferguson, the founder of the Mount Olive Pentecostal
Church. “Through the Foundation, we can expand our
influence and impact in the community as a whole.”
Overcoming boundaries of class and prejudice, Charles E.
Scott was a self-made man and a popular public servant
who championed the rights of his constituents, who
included many European immigrants. “They were the
underrepresented people of his day,” says his grandson,
Ronald S. Scott, who is working with Stacey to develop
an advisory group to guide the growth and usage of the
fund.
“Our goal is to engage more minorities as philanthropic
leaders,” says Stacey, now human resources manager
of the Worcester Public Schools. “The Foundation’s
guidance and stewardship helps donors to envision and
accomplish far more than they might on their own.”
Greater Worcester Land Trust
Preserving woodlands and watersheds
Partnerships protect habitats and engage students as environmental stewards
Worcester County is among the fastest growing regions
of the state. Its open space, long in abundant reserve, is
rapidly yielding to development. Since 1987, the Greater
Worcester Land Trust has been preserving irreplaceable
habitats by acquiring and managing valuable open space
and engaging young people in its conservation ventures.
Foundation grants support operations of the Trust as
well as its special projects, from student internships
to a Blackstone River expedition that publicized the
Blackstone Gateway Park, a program that brings new life
to an old river.
Students from the Worcester Polytechnic Institute and
Clark University recently worked with the Trust to map
habitats in the region, identifying vulnerable species.
“This data can guide us in choosing the lands we go
after,” says Colin M.J. Novick, executive director of the
Land Trust. “Since our region is losing open space faster
than we can protect it, we’re strategic in our acquisitions.
We have to plan years in advance.”
Property transfers take decades—as well as opportunistic
public-private partnerships.
When Worcester Technical High School required five
acres of Green Hill Park for its grounds, in exchange, the
Trust became perpetual steward of an adjacent ten-acre
parcel that expands the park with a turkey vulture nesting
site and fire-tolerant black oak habitat.
Working with private landowners, the Trust acquired 123
acres that connects three formerly separate open spaces.
The contiguous habitat corridor encompasses the entire
length of the Cascades Brook from its source in Paxton to
its outlet in Cook’s Pond. Colin describes the watershed
as “a highway for wildlife.” The greenway also invites
passive recreation—hiking, birding, and nature study.
“People care about the land if they enjoy it and know its
story,” says Colin.
Norma and Saul F. Feingold Fund
Generating opportunities for young people
A grateful couple helps others enjoy Worcester’s educational and cultural assets
Norma and Saul F. Feingold had a lot in common even
before their marriage. Both were born in Worcester.
Norma’s parents and Saul’s grandparents came to
Worcester from Eastern Europe at the turn of the century.
And both graduated from the former Classical High
School in 1950. But it was only while they were students at
the University of Massachusetts Amherst that Norma and
Saul got to know each other. Two weeks after graduation,
they married and moved back to Worcester.
Five decades later, Saul still works in the business founded
by his father, now known as The Feingold Companies.
And Norma recently retired from a 17-year career at the
Worcester Historical Museum, where she was editor of
publications and curator of two major exhibitions about
Worcester’s Jewish community.
Norma and Saul have created funds that help others
enjoy the educational and cultural assets of Worcester,
the home to five generations of the Feingold family.
“The city has been good to us,” says Saul. Norma adds,
“Our livelihood, family and friends are here.”
The Norma and Saul F. Feingold Fund awards
scholarships to local students attending college in
Worcester. In 1994, the couple celebrated the 60th
anniversary of the family business by creating the Anita
and Nathaniel A. Feingold Scholarship Fund. Named in
honor of Saul’s parents, the fund grants scholarships to
children of company employees.
Norma and Saul F. Feingold have created three
funds with the Foundation.
The city has been good to us. The Foundation
fees of students in need of financial aid.
“The Foundation makes it easy for us to achieve our
Regatta Point Community Sailing, Inc.
Introducing the young to the joys of sailing
Girls and boys rise to the challenges of wind, water and team sport
Thousands of Worcester residents first learned to sail on
Lake Quinsigamond, where since 1960, Regatta Point
Community Sailing, Inc. has been introducing children
to the joys of sailing.
“Boating is a great way to build a young person,” says
Allan Fearn, founding director of the program, which
is modeled on Community Boating, Inc. of Boston.
“Sailing challenges kids and teaches self-confidence
and responsibility.”
Foundation grants help pay course fees for Regatta Point
programs, which are open to all boys and girls regardless
of ability to pay.
“Our message is that everybody is welcome and we’re
here for safety, fun and learning,” says John Mullaney,
manager of Regatta Point. “In a small boat, everything is
happening all at once. It can be exciting and frustrating.
If you do something wrong, the consequences are
immediate. Kids learn rules—and respect for wind
and water.”
They also learn teamwork, whether using and
maintaining boats or clearing tables after lunch. “Kids
grow not just in their ability to sail,” says John, “but also
in how they treat others.”
Many begin at the Learn to Sail Summer Camp or in the
after-school Deckhands Program and work their way
up to the Junior Program, where they learn to race and
mentor younger sailors.
John Mullaney manages programs for young sailors.
Some of our kids struggle for success elsewhere
in their lives. But they take to sailing.
“Some of our kids struggle for success elsewhere in their
lives,” says John. “But they take to sailing. At day camp,
kids sail by themselves on the first day, two or three in
a boat, with no adult. They head for the buoy, then turn
around and come back. At the end of the week, they’re
taking their parents for a sail.”
Worcester East Side Community Development Corporation
Regenerating neighborhoods
Three-deckers become quality, affordable homes for a new generation of families
We’ve transformed
the neediest area in
Bell Hill…With patience,
persistence, and good
fortune, we’ve built
upon our successes.
Executive Director Dominick
Marcigliano has led CDC
projects that have created
52 new homes in Bell Hill.
The Worcester East Side Community Development
Corporation (CDC) is bringing boarded-up three-deckers
back to life as quality homes for first time homebuyers. In
the process, the agency is turning Bell Hill into a safe and
appealing neighborhood. Over the past eight years, the
CDC has built or rehabilitated 24 buildings—creating 52
new homes—and converted a trash-strewn lot into a park.
Each new multifamily dwelling has one or two rental
units. “We set people up for success,” says Dominick
Marcigliano, executive director of the CDC. “Rental
income will help owners to remain financially stable.”
By acquiring and rehabbing adjacent properties, the CDC
brings new life not just to individual structures but also
revives an entire neighborhood. “We’ve transformed the
neediest area in Bell Hill, Eastern Avenue, with seven
brand new properties,” says Dominick. “We’re continuing
our march down the avenue with more buildings. We
spend years chasing run-down properties, which are
usually tied up in court. The wheels move slowly. But with
Greater Worcester Community Foundation Annual Report 2006
patience, persistence, and good fortune, we’ve built upon
our successes.”
The CDC is creative at deal making as well as
construction. In partnership with its neighbor UMass
Memorial Health Care and city and state agencies, the
CDC brokered a package that yielded $1 million in
down payment and closing-cost assistance, low-interest
mortgages and home repair loans, and a training
program that leads to job opportunities within UMass
for 16 income-eligible residents. The CDC also succeeded
at designating lower Lincoln Street as a Neighborhood
Revitalization Strategy Area, making it eligible for
block grants that advance both business and residential
development.
“The Foundation’s strong support over the years has
helped us to move forward,” says Dominick. “Its backing
also assists us in leveraging funds from other sources.
And its Nonprofit Support Center has fostered some of
our most productive partnerships.”
Grants
Grants enable us to respond dynamically to changing
community needs and priorities in such areas as health
and human services, education, the environment, culture
and the arts, civic affairs, and community development.
Each year, committees of community volunteers meet
to evaluate more than 300 proposals submitted by local
nonprofits and award grants that vary in size from $250
to more than $300,000.
The Distribution Committee, with the assistance of staff,
makes awards twice annually from the Foundation’s
largest grant pool, its discretionary and field-ofinterest
funds. This deliberative process identifies
grant candidates among applicants—local nonprofit
organizations—that will benefit the most from the
Foundation’s strategic, programmatic, and technical
support. The process also helps all applicants, whether or
not they are grant recipients, to increase the effectiveness
of their programs in measurable and sustainable ways.
In 2006, grants from discretionary and field-of-interest
funds totaled $2.8 million, about 48% of the $5.8 million
in grants awarded by the Foundation this year.
Greater Worcester Community Foundation Annual Report 2006
Donors and Funds
Services to Donors
Philanthropy can be a complex endeavor. The
Foundation’s comprehensive planning and administrative
services help individuals, families and organizations
articulate and fulfill their charitable and financial goals.
We offer donors power and flexibility in charitable
giving without the paperwork, time and expenses
associated with running a private foundation. And
donors benefit from the Foundation’s sophisticated,
$125 million endowment investment program, which
has the discipline to preserve capital during tough times
and the longevity to extend the value and reach of their
contribution over generations.
Donors can choose from a variety of charitable fund and
gift options to maximize their tax advantages and make
a difference. Whatever the size of the charitable gift, the
Foundation can put it to work to increase its value and
impact in the community, both now and in the future.
Ways to Give
We welcome gifts of any size and accept a broad range of
assets, including cash, publicly traded securities, closely
held stock, real estate, life insurance, tangible personal
property and private foundation assets.
Donors can make a gift to any of our existing named
funds or, with a gift of $10,000 or more, they can
establish a fund to create a personal legacy. Donors
receive the maximum tax benefits allowed by law and
the assurance that their intentions will be honored in
perpetuity. Donors and their families are encouraged to
continue giving to the fund to help it grow even more.
Each gift enlarges the endowment and increases its
earnings potential.
Grants are awarded from the named fund to support
nonprofit organizations in accordance with donor wishes.
And as institutions and needs evolve over time, we have
the flexibility to adapt and to continue to fulfill their
long-term charitable goals.
Planned Giving
Donors can make a gift that benefits the community after
their lifetime by:
• A gift through their will
• Naming the Foundation as beneficiary of Individual
Retirement Account assets
• Transferring life insurance policies to the Foundation,
making premium payments tax-deductible and
creating a permanent charitable fund of $10,000
or more
• Donating retained real estate as a future gift while
continuing to use the property throughout their
lifetime
• A charitable vehicle that pays them income now,
and later supports their philanthropic goals,
including pooled income funds (minimum
gift: $5,000), charitable gift annuities (minimum gift:
$10,000) and charitable remainder trusts.
Learning About Our Community
Donors have the opportunity to learn more about
current and emerging issues in our community, including
guided visits to nonprofits that are grant recipients,
focused investment information sessions, and other
donor appreciation events. Donors value these occasions
because they see the impact of their gifts firsthand and
gain insight into the immediate and long-term needs of
our region.
To find out more, we invite you to call us or visit
www.greaterworcester.org
Donors can make a gift to any of our
existing named funds or, with a gift of
$10,000 or more, they can establish a fund
to create a personal legacy.
We invite you to join the ever-growing roster of Acorn
Society members. Becoming a member is simple: Just
let us know that you have named the Foundation as a
beneficiary of your estate.
Your deferred gift can be a portion of your estate—as
little as one percent of its total value. Or with a donation
$10,000 or more, you can establish a named fund.
While helping to secure the future of the Foundation,
your planned gift may provide you with significant
tax advantages. And as a Society member, you will be
invited to special events, including our annual meeting,
investment breakfast, and Insights Tours, which bring
donors and service providers together to explore issues
critical to Greater Worcester.
We are deeply grateful to every member of the Acorn
Society, including those who prefer to remain anonymous.
Your legacy strengthens your Foundation—and
your community.
Find out more by contacting Ann T. Lisi, Executive
Director, at (508) 755-0980 or atlisi@greaterworcester.org.
