Bi-folding Doors – Precautions In aprevious article, Don Waterworth touched on the subject of setting up the sub-frame for bi-folding doors correctly.Here heexpands on the things that can go wrong T here are two main elements when installing bi-folding doors which can cause the unwary installer to be caught out. These are the subframe and correct toe and healing of the units. Sub Frame It is not uncommon to find asubframe has been set incorrectly. An installer should ensure that the subframe is absolutely level, diagonally true and plumb in each plane. As I pointed out in a previous article, you must put lots of time in to setup the subframe. It is worth investing inlaser spirit levels to get the frame absolutely true. Toeand heeling units Even with the sub-frame absolutely spot on, bi-folds need to be toeand heeled properly. In my experience, toe and healing properly comes with experience –and toe and healing full glass panel doors is arelatively new experience for most. Get it wrong and bi-folding doors will not operate effectively. Consider the operation ofthe bifolding door. From an engineering point of view, once the doors are open, they are ina‘cantilevered’ position, with much of the weight being held by the top pin and a lesser amount by the bottom pin. This puts an immense amount of strain on the pins and also on the outer frame ofthe doors themselves. This can lead to‘dropping’. Problems observed Most of the bi-folding doors I haveinspectedrecently have suffered from one or both of the problems mentioned above. Despite these problemsmanifesting themselves as poorly functioning doors, customers have continued touse them and eventually have to force themtoclose and subsequently to lock. This just creates more problems and can lead to damaged hinges, damaged locks and adamaged threshold or door. theinstaller |TechnicalArticle |19
