When Iset about writing this month’s Leader Comment Ifelt compelled to look
back to the start ofthe year. Curiously Ihad forgotten that Ihad written the
following:
Austerity measures, though perhaps necessary, are not working. Austerity does
not have to be quite so flaming well…austere! Paying off the national debt
(which if you look at the figures is nigh on impossible anyway) is important but
there needs to be abit of common sense –and there needs to be growth if we
are even going to think about it. Strangling the Feed-in Tariff, failing to cut fuel
duty, not cutting VAT on home improvements and pfaffing around with a
nonsensical Green Deal are downright destructive.
Ihad also written about ‘confidence’ and how it affects markets and the
economy –particularly from the home owner’spoint of view.
Ithink the George Osborne’s recent Autumn Statement bears out what Iwas
saying.
Anyway, moving on –our report onthe National Home Improvement Council
Annual Awards (for which The Installer and sister publication The Fabricator
were sponsors) will now appear in the Januaryissue.
Road safety
Aconsultation on plans to increase the speed limit for some HGVs in abid to
boost economic growth have been announced by UK Roads Minister Stephen
Hammond.
The current speed limit on single carriageways for HGVs over 7.5t is 40 mph.
Under the proposals, this could be increased to 45mph or 50mph. The speed
limit for smaller HGVs (those between 3.5t and 7.5t) is 50 mph and this will
remain unchanged.
Department for Transport statistics on monitored free-flow roads estimate that
around 70% of HGVs over 7.5t currently travel over 40 mph and it is argued
that these HGVs have an unfair competitive advantage over those that stick to
the speed limit.
The freight industry says that the proposed changes will help growth by
improving journey times, cutting congestion and reducing costs to business
and the cost of goods people buy.
The consultation will run until 1st February 2013 so do make sure you have
your say at: www.dft.gov.uk/consultations/dft-2012-34/
Camden, one of London’s largest boroughs, meanwhile is planning to
introduce across the board speed limit of 20mph on all its roads. There will
be apublic consultation.
Fine the stupid
If Iget an opportunity to have my say it would be this –most road accidents
involving pedestrians are caused by pedestrians. Speed is afactor in reducing
injury ifthere isanimpact or afactor in allowing adriver to avoid an
accident. Camden and the Governement would be far better off reintroducing
lessons in simple road crossing; getting teachers and the police to monitor
roads near schools and insisting pupils use safe crossing points –and arresting
idiot adults who insist on setting bad examples. Hell get the cameras working
on face recognition and the fines could easily drag us out of recession.
Roper Rants at Green
Deal SoftwareFailure
An investigation by the editor,
John Roper, of leading industry
journal The Fabricator has
highlighted some major flaws in the
Govrnemnt’s Green Deal. He writes:
The Green Deal was launched last
October but you will not have
noticed people clamouring to buy
windows either. This is the flagship
policy of the coalition tohelp
households reduce energy bills by
improving insulation.
However, atthe moment this is
all hypothetical because so far
nobody has been able toapply. It
isn’t that assessment firms have
been without enquiries. But,
according toaninvestigation by the
BBC’s You and Yours consumer
programme, they have been turning
enquirers away. When you consider
that assessment and approval
requires specific computer software
and then consider where the
software is coming from it starts to
make sense. Government
departments do not have avery
good track record when it comes to
software and computer systems.
Previous delays and failure are
almost too many tolist.
In this case assessment requires
two pieces of software. The first is
to produce energy performance
certificates, the second measures
how many people in the property
use gas and electricity. It is the
second piece that is not available.
So the Department for Energy
and Climate Change has fessed-up
that to date the number ofrecorded
assessments for The Green Deal is
zero.
Teething troubles
This may be just teething troubles,
the word is that the software will be
available in January. But itdoesn’t
bode well for apolicy that is a
mainstay of the government’s policy
on energy conservation –‘Flagship’
was their word not mine –and we
are still waiting to find out if
windows and doors will actually
make it through the ‘Golden Rule’.
The Rule is to do with payback
against energy bills within the time
allowed. Ihave heard speculation
by people who should know that, in
the end, fenestration will not be
able toqualify because the payback
period is too long.
The ‘Golden Rule’ states that the
charge attached to the energy bill
should not exceed the expected
savings and the length of the
(re)payment period should not
exceed the lifetime of the measures.
Money lenders
The idea of putting aloan onto a
property rather than an individual
and thus, if the property issold,
passing it on to the next owner, still
smacks of agood idea dreamed up
in apub on Friday night. It all
sounds very reasonable if you read
the Department for Energy and
Climate Change’s booklet. The fact
that the repayments form part of
the household energy bills is
supposed to guarantee that the
lender will get his money back but I
don’t suppose that the people who
wrote this are the kind ofpeople
who have difficulty paying their
bills. What happens ifa
householder gets behind? It
happens. And what about credit
ratings? The house won’t have one,
the occupants will; how will that be
taken into account? Ihave never
met abanker who would not ask
for apersonal guarantee if he can
get one. You can’t, after all, send
the repo-men along torip-out the
cavity wall and loft insulation,
though they might have more luck
with the windows and doors. i
The Crystal Column
Crystal’s Sales Director Matthew Burt says window companies need to adapt and find new markets in 2013
George Osborne has unveiled his Autumn
Statement. Further spending cuts and the UK’s
growth forecasts cut too.
It’s been the same story for four years now but
perhaps this is the new ‘normal’. The economy may not
return tothe boom days of the late nineties and early
noughties. So it’s sink or swim. Businesses need to
adapt to survive.
In the good old days, window companies could do well
without too much effort. Credit was easy to come by
and homeowners were queuing up to replace their tired
old windows or extend their homes with aconservatory.
But business won’t fall into your lap now, so you need
to look at new markets and opportunities.
For example, many Crystal customers have found
their niche in coloured profile. We’ve seen agrowing
trend for consumers replacing white PVC-U with
coloured and woodgrain windows and doors. Popular
TV programmes like Homes Under the Hammer, 60-
minute Makeover and Grand Designs have inspired
homeowners to improve their homes and add their
personal stamp with colour.
The Green Deal
You may be sick to death of hearing about it, but The
Green Deal will be big news in 2013 even if it’s unlikely
Staff at VEKA plc were presented
with the Deal of the Year Award
at the recent 2012 Lancashire
accolade, sponsored by Deloitte,
was handed to VEKA MD Dave
thrilled would be an
understatement. Iamvery lucky to
work with such agreat team of
people in Burnley. We have
been working on this deal for
three years and to win this
The 'deal to beat all deals'
safeguarded over 100 jobs
The combined company now
When Veka plc announced the
acquisition of Bowater Building
move that saw the company emerge
as the number one manufacturer of
PVC-U window systems in the UK,
£85million. i
The Green Deal will enable
homeowners to make their homes
more energy efficient with no
upfront costs and interest will be
fixed at the best possible rate. I’ve
heard alot of people question how
successful itwill be, but it will
enable people who couldn’t
otherwise afford it to replace their
windows.
According to Greg Barker, the
Green Deal is expected to run until
in the Green Deal, WERs can still
cutting energy bills is the No. 1
reason for people buying
replacement windows. With rising
fuel costs, energy efficient windows
are asound investment and will
save homeowners money. People
want ways to save money on rising
to MD Stephen Byers, with abusy stand
introducing new and existing customer to
the non-stick world of ClearShield and
encouraging them to fight the causes of
problem glass and to join our ‘GoodGlass
Campaign’.
Ritec is a pioneer in glass surface
continues Byers. “And at the show we had
interest from architects and interior
designers, aswell as those involved in the
solar panel and automotive industries.”
There are different Clearshield
applications and two in particular can be
applied to in-situ glazing. ClearShield Eco
GlassT, for exterior glazing, reduces
routine cleaning by 50% on average for
cleaner, greener energy-saving glass,
while ClearShield Hygiene GlassT, for
interior glazing, is easy to clean and keep
clean and resists the adhesion and growth
of bacteria and viruses through its ‘nonstick’
properties. i
KIC Out of Training
To meet the increasing trend for
main contractors to influence
the specification process,
Kawneer now includes them in its
aimed at specialist sub-contractors.
The KIC (Kawneer Installation
two-day training programme
designed to provide astructured,
strategic approach to the
installation of Kawneer’s curtain
walling, window, door and framing
systems. Since it was launched,
hundreds of industry personnel
have attended.
As well as specialist sub-contract
installers, the course has also been
aimed at main contractor envelope
personnel to give them not only the
opportunity to improve their
knowledge of architectural systems
Crystal Direct has established an
exclusive supplier agreement to
guarantee the best products, price
and service
MATTHEW BURT FROM CRYSTAL
DIRECT recently told TheInstaller: “In a
tough market, customers need the best
choice of products and aclear pricing
structure to do well. If fabricators
suddenly stop making certain products or
raise prices without warning, it can
damage their customers’ business.”
Crystal now offers installers asupplier
agreement to guarantee the best product
range, service and pricing structure.
Continues Burt: “We hope this
partnership will give our customers peace
of mind. They know they will have aclear
‘no surprise’ pricing structure so they
know exactly how much they will be
paying. i
Certass is the UK’s leading Competent Person Scheme
TRR –isthe easiest way tocomply with Part Lofthe Building Regulations
Certass Highlights –
an Overviewof2012
December has arrived again and it’s that time of year when we consider achievements
over the last year and look forward tothe next, writes Mike Billington Chairman of Certass
T
his has probably been
our busiest year since
Certass was established
in April 2006 –our membership
base now exceeds
2,500. In fact, even though
the country has been through the
toughest trading period since the
1930s, we are still recruiting new
members, many of whom have
never been in aCompetent Person
Scheme before. So it is clear that
the message about the benefits of
our scheme over the alternatives
continues to be received.
Being amember of Certass entitles
you to self certify that your
work complies with current Building
Regulations. As a Certass
member this means that your profile
is boosted and ensures that
your clients are protected from accusations
that their installation is illegal.
Installers who do not belong
to ascheme like Certassmust register
every job with the local authority
and pay asubstantial fee
for each one. Inevitably,this leads
to widespread avoidance of the
legal requirement to get Building
Regulation approval. This puts
your client at risk of local authority
enforcement action which can
lead to aconviction and fine.
Our accreditations
When you join Certass we are required
to assess your capability to
deliver aquality installation for
your customers that complies with
the Building Regulations. This duty
to check your company and its
work is placed on us by central
government and we are subject to
very stringent conditions. After a
16 |CertassColumn |theinstaller
gestation period of over three
years, the terms and conditions
under which we operate as a
Competent Person Scheme were
completely rewritten and came
into force in June this year. This
meant we have had to substantially
revise the way we operate
and the way we assess our members.
As partofthis revision it was
necessary for us to apply to the
United Kingdom Accreditation
Service (UKAS) to be accredited
under EN 45011. We achieved
this in May of this year and at the
same time achieved accreditation
to certify the installation of energy
efficient glazing and doors under
the GreenDeal. This means, effectively,
that our members will be
able to apply to Certass to carry
out Green Deal work when the
scheme comes into operation in
2013, subject to them satisfying
certain competence requirements.
Green Deal
Green Deal is ahot topic at the
moment about which installers
have alot of questions. Itisthe
Government initiative that will provide
both homeowners and commercial
customers with the
opportunity to make energy efficient
improvements withouthaving
to pay for the installation costs upfront.
We have been publishing
details of this on our website, so
for more information go to
www.certass.co.uk/news
Qualifications
Another way in which our new
terms and conditions of operation
and the GreenDeal initiative have
affected the way we operate is in
the area of glazing sector qualifications.
Both these initiatives will
require installing companies to
demonstrate that they employ a
competentworkforce.This can be
achieved by either:
•Having arecognised national
qualification such as Level 2
NVQ/QCF in Fenestration
Installation; or
•AMinimum Technical
Competence assessment
(MTC assessment).
In order to assist its members to
satisfy these requirements Certass
has partnered with 4GE Academy
to provide funded NVQ/QCF
training and apprenticeship
places for glazing sector qualifications.
4GE Academy specialisesin
the development and management
of apprenticeships and national
qualifications across many
industrysectors, helping to deliver
our commitment to continually improve
industry standards all
round. More details are avail
-able from www.certass.co.uk/
contractors/training
Commercial extension
Finally, Certass has applied to the
Government to extend the scope if
its current glazing scheme to commercial
buildings (at present it only
covers domestic dwellings) and
we have also submitted anapplication
to run aCompetent Person
Scheme for building fabric insulation
which will be important when
the Green Dealstarts up next year.
The Government is due to announce
the results of these applications
in the next few weeks. i

Here’stoaHappy,
Prosperous NewYear!
Certass has been working hard throughout 2012 to ensure that wecontinue to improve the
experience for our members, writes Barrie Smith-Wright joint MD of Certass
Even though Competent
Person Schemes were introduced
over 10 years
ago, some organisations
still see them as a
negative but many home improvement
companies have embraced
them and have
benefitted greatly from being in
such ascheme.
There are many benefits to
being aCertass member but in
the spirit of the holiday season,
we want to highlight three which
we believe are true stars:
•FREE TrustMark registration;
•FREE industry qualifications;
and a
•FREE manual based on the
requirements of Document L
and other regulations that will
affect installers.
‘
by joining the scheme. Due to
Certass’s strict vetting procedures,
all companies who join us
will be registered withTrustMark.
Recently, ahome improvement
company lost alarge contract to
acompetitor due it not having
TrustMark status. The managers
looked in to applying for Trust-
Mark status and once they knew
they could have this as part of
their Certass membership at no
extra cost, they contacted our office
for an application pack and
joined immediately.
We would like tonow take this
opportunity to wish you all avery
Happy Christmas and splendid
NewYear from everyone at Certass
and we look forward toworking
with you in2013
TrustMark
TrustMark has gone from
strength to strength since its
launch in 2005, with over
22,000 registered companies
now listed on its website. It is licensed
by the government and is
supported by consumer protection
groups. There are strict criteria
to gain TrustMark status but
firms have gained extra business
Industry qualifications
Changes to Competent Person
Scheme operator licenses in June
2012 highlighted the need for
glazing sector qualifications. The
new operatorlicensesrequire in-
’
stallers to demonstrate evidence
of the competence of employees
against National Occupational
Standards (NOS), achieved either
through recognised qualifications
(Level 2/3 NVQ
Fenestration Installation) or an
MTC (Minimum Technical Competence)
assessment. Where
training is required, the installer
is normally required to cover the
cost. However, Certass in partnership
with 4GE Academy, is
now able to provide fully funded
qualifications at no cost to its
members, which brings anew
level of assistance to Certass
members.
Manual based on the
requirements of Document L
Many home improvement firms
know the building regulations requirements
for their industry but
there are quite afew regulations
that installers may be unsure
about. Therefore, to ensure our
members are always up to date
with requirements, we provide a
free manual. This document is
offered through our members’
area on our website, so it’s easy
to access. Our Chairman, Mike
Billington, authors this manual
and as he has over 40 years’ experience
in building control. We
think he has everything covered
to help our installers.
Here’s toahappy 2013
In summary, 2012 has been a
challenging year for many contractors
but we at Certass hope
that FREE TrustMark registration,
FREE industry qualifications and
aFREE manual based on the requirements
of Document Land
other regulations will help our
members get off to abright start
in 2013.
Here’s toahappy, prosperous
New Year! i
The Installer magazine is proud to be the Official Journal of Top 100 Trades
Bi-folding Doors –
Precautions
In aprevious article, Don Waterworth touched on the subject of setting up the sub-frame
for bi-folding doors correctly. Here heexpands on the things that can go wrong
T
here are two main
elements when
installing bi-folding
doors which can
cause the unwary
installer to be
caught out. These
are the subframe
and
correct toe
and healing
of the units.
Sub Frame
It is not
uncommon
to find asubframe
has
been set
incorrectly.
An installer
should
ensure that
the subframe
is
absolutely
level, diagonally
true
and plumb in
each plane.
As I pointed
out in a
previous article,
you must
put lots of
time in to setup
the subframe.
It is
worth investing inlaser spirit levels
to get the frame absolutely
true.
Toeand heeling units
Even with the sub-frame
absolutely spot on, bi-folds need
to be toeand heeled properly. In
my experience, toe and healing
properly comes with experience
–and toe and healing full glass
panel doors is arelatively new
experience for most. Get it
wrong and bi-folding doors will
not operate effectively.
Consider the operation ofthe bifolding
door.
From an engineering point of
view, once the doors are open,
they are ina‘cantilevered’ position,
with much of the weight
being held by the top pin and a
lesser amount by the bottom pin.
This puts an immense amount of
strain on the pins and also on the
outer frame ofthe doors themselves.
This can lead to‘dropping’.
Problems observed
Most of the bi-folding doors I
haveinspectedrecently have suffered
from one or both of the
problems mentioned above.
Despite these problemsmanifesting
themselves as poorly functioning
doors, customers have
continued touse them and eventually
have to force themtoclose
and subsequently to lock. This
just creates more problems and
can lead to damaged hinges,
damaged locks and adamaged
threshold or door.
theinstaller |TechnicalArticle |19
the technicalarticle in association with Top100 Trades

Return visits
Iwould advise any company
that supplies bi-folding
doors tothe trade to put in
their guidelines that ‘it
should be anticipated that
bi-folding doors may well
require re-toeing and heeling
on aregular basis (i.e.
every 12-18months) and
thus ‘maintenance’ should
be built into the sales contract’.
Bi-folding door manufacturers
should be aware
of the potential to be
blamed for a defective
product when in reality it is
incorrect installation which
has caused the failure.
I have incorporated diagrams
kindly provided to
me by Duration Windows
of Canvey Island, Essex
showing the typical toe and
heeling positions of bi-folds.
Preparation is the key
As with all installations,
preparation should be the
watch word. It is of little
assistance to your business
to quickly fit aset of 4, 5or
6panel bi-folding doors to
then have toreturn every 2-
3weeks toadjust them.
Seeing is believing
There are alot of good bifolding
products on the marketand
most of the ones that
I have inspected over the
last two tothree years have
been well manufactured
however without exception,
they have been installed
incorrectly. (N.B. I don’t
inspect things unless someone
thinks there is aproblem.
I’m sure there are plenty
of bi-fold installations out
there that are of avery high
standard –Ijust don’t get
called to look at them.) i
Bi-folding
Materials &Markets
Bi-folding doorssales are
very buoyant despite
the relatively high price
tag for a single home
improvement product.
Consumers have been inspired
by the likes ofKevin McCloud
and the Grand Designs show to
look at their property not just in
terms ofbricks and mortar but in
terms oflight and space.
Without question, adding abifolding
door to any building project
adds considerablelight, flexibility
and offers atrue sense of
grandeur. Asahigh ticket item
and as we continue the steady
march out of economic recession,
the market for these doors
will continue to prosper.
Encourage spending
We should also consider the current
economic status with regard
to bank lending and the housing
market. Lending from the banks
is never likely to be so liberal
again for many years, following
the banking crisis and this not
only impacts on first time buyers
but also those consumers wanting
to move up the housing ladder
with arelatively limited budget.
The result isthat consumers
do have a level of disposable
income and adesire to improve
their living environment but we
need to identify and entice them
to do so.
Abi-folding door can make a
radical transformation for the
key living areas in ahouse, particularly
the lounge and dining/kitchen
areas. In the new
build market, style savvy developersare
already introducing bifolding
doors often atthe back
of properties and even integrat-
Jim Kelleher,sales and
marketing manager for KAT
UK, looks at the options in
the bi-folding and sliding
door market. From different
product materials to
numerous different
applications, there’s
actually more toconsider in
this market sector than you
may believe…
ing them into luxurious apartments.
This premise is also equally
applicablefor extensions, with
homeowners eager to add
space and style.
Replacement
In some housesthere is already a
suitable opening for abi-folding
door where currently a large
patio door is in place with atypical
span of 2.0 -2.5m. There
are also opportunities where
there are French doors on the
back of properties with fixed
lights either side. For the sales
savvy installation companies
with ahistory, there’s the opportunity
to go back and sell abifolding
door as an upgrade to
existing customers.
Bi-folding doors are also increasingly
specified for conservatories,
according to the latest statistics
from the Palmer Report,
which suggests that their adoption
has increased three-fold
over the last 12 months. This isn’t
surprising as the value and size
of conservatories increases.
New conservatories are being
installed with bi-folding doors as
an upgrade to French doors and
sliding patio doors and also as
part ofthe overall conservatory
or Orangery design. They are
also being incorporated into
conservatory refurbishment projects,
where existing homeownerswant
to re-ignite their passion
for extended living.
Materials and price points
In terms ofmaterials and price
points bi-folding doors are now
available in PVC-U, aluminium
and timber (all single or dual
colour) and this is something that
we’re pioneering at KAT UK.
Each material has its own merits
and are suitable for different
types of project.
PVC-U bi-folding doors have
come alongway in recent years
and there are now afew second
generation dedicated systems
outthere in themarketplace.The
dedicated systems by far outperform
earlier ones that have been
manufactured with existing window
and door system profiles
and they also provide better
sightlines with less PVC-U and
more glass.
Foiled again
These dedicated PVC-U bi-folding
door systems typically
require no dummy mullion,thereby
creating an uncluttered door
the nature of timber, bi-folding
that the finish onthe new doors,
replicates the timber elsewhere
in the property. Typically timber
doors will be offered with
bespoke and luxury handles,
fusion of amodern door design
with atraditional material.
Timber bi-folding doors can be
Support
The bi-folding door market isrelatively
diverse not only inapplication
butalsoinmaterial.This is
agreat opportunity for installers
to upsell the typical patio and
French door but toalso address
the desire of homeowners for
something more inspirational.
For companies not yet embracing
bi-folding doors, you should
have nofear ifyou pick asupplier
that can offer you arange
of dedicated products, backed
with onsite and off site support.
Life enriching
Kevin McLoud, the man behind
Grand Designs, suggests that
homeowners shouldn’t necessarily
consider home improvement
projects by the monetary value
added to the home but more
importantly in the way they
enrich our lives. Agrand opening
on any home with abi-folding
door will do just that with
aplomb but consideration needs
to be made interms of material,
application and fundamentally
the supplier Iwould suggest. i
Quality Sells
–and Saves
It’s afact that quality always
sells and that the best form
of recommendation is word
of mouth. Without the first
you don’t get the latter,
writes David Newton of Brio
UK (a bi-folding door
hardware manufacturer).
Put the two together and
you have anunbeatable
combination...
Bi-folding
doors are the
must-have design feature in both
domestic and commercial settings
where the craze to let the
outside inand the inside out is
rapidly gaining momentum.
Commercial expansion
However, the market is fast
expanding beyond the domestic
setting into the commercial sectorwhere
hotels,restaurantsand
cafes are also benefiting form
the current al fresco trend. For
manufacturers of doors and windows
this trend offers anopportunity
to cash inonhigh spec,
high end products to satisfy current
demand in this luxury niche.
Test of time
However, windows and doors
are ahuge investment and apurchase
that should last alongtime
so it is really important to ensure
the best possible quality hardware
issourced, offering peace
of mind that the product will
stand the test of time.
Fabricators and the installers
that buy from them should be
very wary ofapolicy of buying
hardwaresolely on price as in so
many cases this is afalse economy.
What is the point ofusing
expensive timber when manufacturing
doors and windows and
then fitting the cheapest hardware
available? There is no point
–itwould be mistaken and ultimately
self destructive for any
business to do so. The installer
runs the risk of increased costs
from expensive remedial works
which in the long term isexpensive
for the manufacturer who
would have been better off paying
more for abetter product.
Specification of the materials
When selecting hardware it is
important to consider the specification
ofthe materials used inits
production. Often substandard
product contains alot of plastic
components and these can have
an adverse effect on the life
expectancy of the product.
Unfortunately there are many
substandard products on the
market.
The chain
It is also fundamental that the
product is easy to use right down
the line from the fabricator to the
installer and ultimately the end
user.Any quality hardware manufacturer
will have considered
the chain of use when designing
their products.
Security
Another important consideration
when specifying door and window
hardware is security. Doors
and windows are the most likely
area of attack for any would-be
burglar, so it is therefore vital
that good security is offered
when itcomes to door and window
hardware. It’s important to
choose products that have been
tested for years of safe and consistent
operation.
Product really does need to act
the part and not only look good
as Ralph Croxford who installed
the bespoke heavy sliding doors
for aswimming pool extension
at aprivate house nearLiverpool
(Pictured above) says: “Door
hardware needs tobeaesthetically
pleasing, durable and reasonably
priced. Architects and
specifiers will always demand
products that tick many boxes –
visual appearance is important,
as well as durability of the product
but in the main they will be
looking for aproduct that looks
good and can offeryears of trouble
free use.” i
Let’s go
Outside
Garden rooms are apopular solution to the issue of extra
space inwhich to work. Here Alan Robinson adirector of
aluminium door and window fabricator Alumen advises
how installers can increase business by helping their
customers achieve the perfect office space
At a time where
more employees
than ever before
are able to work
from home, the
demand for home offices has
increased significantly. According
to the Office for National
Statistics, around 13 per cent of
people in the UK now work fulltime
fromhome, with many more
doing so at least one day a
week. With the recession showing
no real signs of disappearing
in the short-term and business
running costs on the
increase, home working is a
timely and cost effective solution
for businesses - and can even
generate increased productivity.
On topofthese figuresadd the
increasing number of people
who have started their own business
from their homes, after
being made redundant from
struggling firms and it is clear
that this is atrend that is here to
stay.Soitcomes as no great surprise
that (as highlighted inthe
Window, Door and Conservato-
tion from Palmer Market
Research) there is increased
demand for the extension and
improvement of homes. In particular,
this trend is manifesting
itself in higher value conservatories,
orangeries and garden
rooms that can provide home
office space.
Far from the madding crowd
Garden rooms specifically are
perfect for this purpose as they
provide acomfortable, spacious
room to work in, away from the
distractions of the home itself
and can be utilised the whole
year round.
Whether they are adjoined to
the propertyorstandaloneinthe
garden, bi-fold doors are ideal
for combining the indoor and
outdoor living space or allowing
natural light into the room. Itis
widely documented that natural
light inaworkplace can reduce
eye strain, increase productivity
and even help to minimise
absenteeism.
At Alumen wehave noticed a
marked increase
in the number of
our aluminium bifolding
and sliding
doors being
sold to garden
room applications
designed to provide
an additional
working space in
the customer’s
home. Bi-fold
Aluminium is fast becoming a
popular choice due to its lightweight,
nature.
Alumen customers have a
choice of approaches. We offer
The New
Wave Door
W
hen Ray Green of Legacy
Windows calledAvocet’s
(the window and
Kevin Harveyhesaid: “I’ve gota
-it’s something special. And
when Harvey travelled to see it
he said: “There is nothing like it
in the market and after Ray’s
demonstration I could see it
would completely change the
market.” Now the New Wave
Door system has been launched
and Harvey isconfident
in saying: “This
is a step change
fromtraditionalpatio
and bi-fold door systems.
The operational
hardware is
concealed within the
door and frame and
makes the door one
of the ‘cleanest’ and
most visually striking
available.”
“The system offers
significant benefits to
both fabricators and
installers. Whilst looking like a
multi-paned patio door, all sashes
can be opened fully and are
independent of each other. In a
four pane patio door for example
the fabricator would be
required to make four identical
frames, none of which is hinged
to the other, simple,” continues
Harvey.”The frame is mechanically
jointed and is easily transported
to site minimising potential
damage. The frame is
assembled from four sections on
site and the sashes are screwed
to the pre-fitted brackets and slid
into place one atatime. Fitting
time is less than half of an equivalent
bi fold door. The doors
incorporate analuminium interlock
offering a secure and
weather resistant finish to the
effective and clear sightlines of
the door.
Opening choice
“Magnaline technology allows
the sashes to effortlessly slide to
the side of the opening and then
pivot tothe normal opening position.
The doors then stack together
neatly creating aseamless transition
between the home and
patio area. As the doors open
individually, the homeowner can
choose to have which ever opening
they require, the door effectively
acts as apartition as well as
aunique patio door system.” i
SOLIDOR HAS LAUNCHED THE WINKHAUS AV2 HERITAGE DOOR LOCK, which satisfies the
need for traditional looking rim latches oncomposite doors, yet with the benefit of high security, multipoint
locking. The AV2 is seen as an upgrade from the old key wind upand traditional rim lock previously used
at Solidor.
Up until now, modern multi-point locking systems haven’t lent themselves to doors that feature pull door
furniture, particularly Georgian and Edwardian period doors and it has been atopic ofdiscussion for the
composite door sector. The AV2 Heritage Locking System has the euro profile locking cylinder at asimilar
height to atraditional round cylinder and the lock is operated automatically assoon as the door is closed.
This key feature means that an external lever handle is not required to operate the locking points and the
lock canbedeadlocked or opened externally by turning thekey aquarter of aturn. Fromthe inside the door
can be opened by an internal thumb turn, again with aquarter turn. The door isautomatically locked when
closed from the inside and the key is then required to gain entry from the outside. The AV2 has been
engineered andmanufactured in Germany as aquality product and is Police SecuredbyDesign,PAS23/24
Signaturesigns its name to security
Pioneer isfitting the SAC VSeries Shootvault 3D
Locking System and high quality, cast zinc handles
as standard on its Signature Casement window. The
Signature Window has become one of the most secure
available, as through the addition as standard of a
door-type deadbolt lock. The Shootvault 3D lock pro-
vides 11point locking with adeadbolt to provide what
the company claims is virtually impregnable security.
This factor, along with the window being thermally
efficient, has found favour amongst Signature dealers
who are selling the product exclusively as part ofthe
Signature Network.
The central part of the lock utilises arugged steel
deadbolt lock which fits into aspecially designed GFN
keep with ahardened steel plate that provides exceptional
resistance to determined attack. Two steel cams
on the mechanism also secure in this central keep to
provide additional security on either side of the dead-
bolt lock. Apatented docking system also secures the
bolt in the keep against sideways movement when
under attack.
The 3D shootbolt arrangement incorporates acam
on the shootbolt which extends into ahardened steel
keep to prevent the shootbolt being levered out of its
location. Thus ashootbolt locking system is designed
to resist attack on all three planes offering significantly
improved levels of security.
Williams engineering
In addition to the high security Pioneer boss Danny
Williams has put his money
where his mouth isbychoosing
ahigh quality, cast zinc handle
as standard fitting for the Signature
Casement, whch he personally
designed and developed.
Having railed against what he
believes is abroad fall in the
overall quality ofwindow and
door hardware and alack of
choice from the industry’s leading
hardware suppliers, Danny has sourced what he
believes is one of the best quality handles available and
is now supplying them asstandard onthe Signature
Sash.
“Fitting great quality hardware issoimportant,”
explains Williams. “Sales are won and lost through the
customer’s perceptions of how the window feels, not
just how it looks and security is such anemotive issue.
So we are supplying our frames as standard now with
the SAC Shootvault and these handles, which are far
superior to most ofthe hardware that isavailable from
majority of the industry’s best known brands.
“Our dealers are enjoying growing sales because they
can tell their customers that the SignatureSash is the best
addition of the SACShootvault and cast handles as standardmeans
thatthe window is virtuallyimpossible to
Apeer Doors MD Asa McGillian has raised some £3,000 for the Samaritans and
Action Cancer when he took part in awhite collar boxingbout at the Tullyglass House
Hotel in Ballymena, beating his opponent in the secondofthe three-round fight.
Said Asa: “One of the guys who worksfor Apeer talked me into taking part and before I
knew whereIwas, Iwas training six days aweek for 10 weeks! It was completely nerve
racking –somethingI’d never done before,” said Asa. “However, it meant that Apeer doors
and our suppliers raised aworthwhile sum for two important charities.”
Asa trained undersix-times world champion professional boxer Eamonn Loughran to
ensuresuccess at the charity boxing event which raised over £20,000 in total and attracted
over 1,000 spectators to the 10 fight event.
The boxing match marksasecond ‘sporting’ event for the company. It recently released
afun video of UK strongman Glenn Ross going threerounds with an Apeer door –and losing!
The video was developed as anovel way to demonstrate the sheer strength and durability
of Apeer doors and can be seen on the Apeer website. i
SYNSEAL FABRICATOR MWG RECENTLY MANUFAC-
TURED AND INSTALLED MORE THAN 30 WINDOWS
ON THE MASJID-E-ZEENAT-UL-ISLAM MOSQUE IN
COVENTRY FOLLOWING ASUBSTANTIAL EXTENSION
TO THE SITE.
The frames were fabricated using foiled Legend 70 PVC-U
profiles and were designed to blend in with the architect’s vision
for the extendedmosque, including thecolourand texture of the
brickwork.
Projects like this prove the widespread demand for speciallydesigned
multi-light windows in shapes other than square
casements, and it underpins Synseal’s investment in the K2 site
at Blackburn where it has recently installed state-of-the-art
bending equipment.
Synseal can now deliver arched top and other curved
window styles. Thenew facility willalso produce ‘starburst’-style
gableends forSynseal andK2customers, and willsupplythem
with the shaped glass double units tosuit, reducing complexity,
cost, and lead times for customers. i synseal.co.uk
WAKEFIELD DISTRICT HOUSING HAS FOUND ACOST
EFFECTIVE SOLUTION TO IMPROVING THE THERMAL
EFFICIENCY OF 1500 HOMES – simply by replacing the
casements but leaving inplace the Sheerframe outer frames.
The original single-glazed Sheerframe windows fabricated
and installed 20 years ago by social housing fenestration specialist
Wakefield Metroglaze largely retaintheir integrity meaning
only the opening lights –plus glazed units insome fixed
lights –require replacement to meet today’s Building Regulations.
In addition to the thermal and aesthetic benefits, this
upgrade approach also minimises the disruption which full
replacement might bring, reducing inconvenience for householders.
Wakefield Metroglaze is completing the window upgrading
at arate of 25 properties per week and has so far completed
more than 200 homes. The new casementsare createdwith the
latest Sheerframe PVC profile system which is multi-chambered
for superior resistance to heat loss to deliver windows with alow
whole window U-value. i sheerframe.co.uk
THE LATEST ORANGERY SOLUTIONS INSTAL-
LATION (at the Retreat mental healthcare facility)
demonstrates the diversity and versatility of the company’s
patented cassette system, which can be used for
both domestic and commercial purposes.
The cassette system offers many structural advantages
and is proven to withstand aone tonne side wind
load with ease, which easily met the building regulations
and requirements ofthe architect and planners.
Working alongside the in-house architect who had appointed Orangery Solutions on recommendation, the company produced
a6.2 x5.0 mbrick parapet style orangery, which was to be used as aday room with views over extensive lawns. The installation
was needed to connect an existing stable area and the main building as part of major renovations that would create extra space
for accommodation. i orangery-solutions.com
Being abletoswitch from residential replacement contractsto
office fit-outs is easier said than done, as Synseal’s fabricator
development manager,Brian Walker, explains: “A commercial
contract is vastly different to aresidential one,” he says. “You
havetobeextremely extremelyflexible andbewell-versed in anumber of
other commercial requirements, such as amore robust health
and safety policy, the ability to deal with main contractors and
sub-contractors, and having agreater commercial awareness.
SIONS HAS ENABLED AMOTORBIKE SHOP OWNER
WIN ABATTLE AGAINST THE ELEMENTS, WHILE PRO-
VIDING A CONSERVATORY COMPANY WITH A
STRAIGHTFORWARD AND SATISFYING INSTALLATION.
Until recently, a small showroom meant that owner Kevin
Strickland had to move all the bikes out on to the court each
morning, before moving them all back under cover in the evening.
Kevin, therefore, turned to local installation specialists Minster
Windows for an all-weather solution. Minster, in turn, approached
its product supplier, Yorkshire Trade Windows who scoured the
market for the best portal frame for the job.
Minster’s Chris Partridge explains: “It was the biggest project
that we had been involved with for about 10 years,” explained
Minter’s Chris Partridge. This is agood example of how Synseal
works with its customers –and their customers –tomake the most
of opportunities. Many companies would have been put off by the
challenge of installing the portal frame structure, but there was
support up and down the supply chain to make it asuccess.” i
synseal.co.uk
“Of course, ifour customers goafter larger jobs like these,
then Synseal has alot of experience and tools at our disposal
to help these contracts become asuccess. Primarily, having
Synseal as a materials supplier gives the contractor the
confidence that they are dealing with aserious company with
high standards.” i
The new triple glazing beads are available in White, three woodgrains, and 13 Artisan
“Homeowners are more aware than ever before of the energy saving properties that the
right kind of windows can offer aproperty,” explains David Leng, Chief Executive of
Synseal Extrusions. “While today’s double glazed windows are far superior totheir earlier
designs, nothing wins the homeowner over more effectively than an extra pane of glass,
making them the perfect marketing tool. In typical Synseal style, we’ve made this an option
for Synseal customers thanks to our cleverly designed glazing beads.” i synseal.co.uk
