Company History...
Formed by Prosthetist Bob Watts in 1989, Dorset
Orthopaedic has built a reputation on quality,
respect and the complete understanding of the
needs of amputees. The company has gained a
reputation as one of the leading Prosthetic Clinics
in the world today.
Dorset Orthopaedic prides itself on the ability to
prescribe and manufacture any type of prosthesis
or orthosis, from traditional materials such as
metal, to modern ultra lightweight carbon fibre,
incorporating components from around the world.
The company’s multidisciplinary team provides
a comprehensive rehabilitation service including
prosthetics, orthotics, physiotherapy, occupational
therapy and counselling.

Basics to bionics...
Whether you have undergone amputation surgery or have congenital absence, our highly experienced
Prosthetists can assist clients with ALL levels of absence, often helping clients with the most complex of
needs. Being completely independent our clinicians source components based on individual needs, often
thinking ‘outside the box’ in solving more complex cases.
Consultation
An initial consultation with one of our consultant Prosthetists lasts approximately 1 hour and will cover
topics such as medical history, previous prescription, your expectations and discussing the way forward.
A quotation is sent out shortly after your consultation, giving details of costs and prescriptions for the
prosthesis discussed.
Appointments
Following the acceptance of your quotation, a detailed schedule of appointments is made incorporating the
following:
A further two appointments are necessary for a silicone cosmesis. These may be incorporated into the
fitting and shaping appointments.
Teamwork is an essential part of this process. Dorset Orthopaedic has worked with many hundreds
of clients who remain faithful to the company to this day. The success of this relationship depends on

Basics to bionics...
Types of Prosthesis
At Dorset Orthopaedic, we realise that everyone is an individual with
different needs. We offer various types of prostheses according to the level
of amputation, which provide varying functions. Our foremost concern is the
comfort of the socket, then we consider the function of the limb and finally the
type of finish required.
Upper Extremity Prosthesis
Our clinicians are qualified and experienced in the fitting of all types of upper
extremity prostheses, from individual digits to full shoulder length prostheses.
We regularly fit body powered and myo-electric functional limbs, as well as
custom made high definition silicone cosmetic arms and hands. Our clinicians
are trained and experienced in fitting the latest bionic products including
electric elbows, wrists, hands and individual digits.

Lower Extremity Prosthesis
We are pleased to be able to offer a whole variety of
lower extremity prostheses with various high tech
components and finishes.
From individual toes to full length hip disarticulation
prostheses, our clinicians offer a wealth of
experience and expertise.
Whether your requirements are for a basic
functional limb, a high tech computerised limb,
such as on Otto Bock C-Leg or the Ossur Bionics
range, or a dedicated activity limb for running,
swimming and so on, we will be happy to assist.

Choosing the finish for the prosthesis...
There are various types of finishes available to cover
your prosthesis. This is very much a personal choice
and would depend on the function that is required.
Coverless
all. Limbs used for high levels of activity, such as
running, would need to be lighter and thus no cover
is used. Quite often, clients like the look of the
carbon componentry and decide to opt for no cover.
Superskin Finish
A flexible spray finish which can be matched to your
skin tone using various coloured sprays. Visual hair
can also be added for a more life-like finish.
Silicone Finish
For a life-like finish, you can opt for a high definition
silicone cover that is colour-matched to your skin
tone, sculpted and given features according to your
wishes.

Partial Hands & Digits

Built on a cast of the client’s residual limb,
technicians are able to work with different types of
silicone and soft gel inserts to create a comfortable
full or partial cosmesis with breath-taking levels of
detail.
Partial Feet & Toes
Many partial feet include gel pads for protection
of sensitive areas. Depending on the prescription
required, carbon blades can be embedded within
the silicone to help with function. As with all our
silicone work, detailing and finish are fully bespoke.
Cosmetic Restoration
Cosmetic restoration is an important and
specialised area within silicone. Individuals who, for
many years have endured unbalanced limb shapes
due to disease or accidents causing tissue loss can
now be fitted with individually specified and made
silicone covers.

“I have been an amputee for just
over 6 years and have always had
a problem with my right stump. It
decreases in volume throughout the
day meaning my prosthesis would fall
off after a couple of hours use.
I first met Bob Watts over a year ago,
not to talk about my existing walking
limbs but for Bob to fit me with a pair
of running legs so I could achieve
one of my goals of competing in a Triathalon.
After our first meeting, Dorset
Orthopaedic kindly offered to sponsor
me to compete in the event. Better
still, Bob had a solution for my socket
problems and I was fitted with the
new Lok-In liner socket system. These
made a big difference as previous
off the shelf liners had not been long
enough to cover the top part of my leg,
which led to sores where the sockets
rubbed my skin.
Another difference I noticed being
treated at Dorset was the amount of
time Bob spent with me, especially
at the check socket phase. He kept
making tiny changes until the sockets
where perfect.
When the sockets were complete,
I met with Dorset’s Physio, Justin
examination, some exercises to
practice at home and spent a few
sessions with me improving my
running technique. I was able to run
3-4 times a week, building up my
fitness and I was surprised at how
long I could use my limbs for, at such
high impact, without feeling any
pain in my stumps from the sockets.
I found I was also able to use my
running limbs for a range of other
activities including circuit classes and
boxing.

Justin Scriven
Chartered Physiotherapist
Justin graduated from the University of the West of
England in1998 with 1st class honours. He worked
at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital before working
to the UK in 2003 and has set up a successful
physiotherapy and rehabilitation clinic.
Justin’s special interest is in the analysis
and improvement of human movement and
biomechanics, particularly in the field of sports
injuries and amputee rehabilitation. He has been
working with the Dorset Orthopaedic team since
2005. Making use of fully equipped rehabilitation
facilities, the latest in digital video analysis and
individualised exercise programmes, Justin can
help amputees achieve their full potential.
Penny-Anne Elms
Counsellor
Penny has been part of
the Dorset Orthopaedic
team for more than 10
years and has a high
level of experience
with our clients. Using
Penny’s expertise, Dorset
Orthopaedic is able to
offer in-house support
to clients who would
like to talk confidentially about their experiences
and feelings in a way that might be difficult with
friends and family. This unique service has proved
very helpful for many of our clients who have

situation has had on their lives.
Sarah Chubb
Occupational Therapist
Therapist and enjoys helping amputee clients fulfil
their maximum level of independence in valued
daily activities such as personal care, domestic
activities, work and leisure. As an Occupational
Therapist, she also evaluates the psychological
impact the injury may have had on a client and how

Orthotic Clinic...
Orthotic is the term derived from the Greek ‘ortho’,
meaning straight or normal and ‘tics’, meaning
systematic pursuit. Literally, orthotics is the
straightening, supporting and correcting of limbs or
the spine using splints, braces and supports.
Dorset Orthopaedic have been supplying a private
Orthotic service since the official opening of our
first Orthotic clinic in Ringwood, Hampshire, in
2001. This service now extends to our clinics in
Burton upon Trent and London. Our Orthotists
deal with patients suffering with a multitude of
conditions including spinal injuries, peripheral
sports injuries to name but a few.
Our Orthotists are experienced in prescribing and
fitting all types of traditional and complex orthotic
devices; our services now include the prescription
of special seating and wheelchairs/adaptations
where required. Our solutions range from simple
biomechanical insoles that change weight-bearing
characterisics during standing and walking,
through to more complex knee ankle foot orthoses

April’s sultry advance seems to
unofficially mark the end of the rains

at U20 in rugby and waterpolo, drove
me further and further away from
ever being able to commit to any
meaningful fitness regime again.
Thanks to the brilliance that is the

that I set for myself, the joy that I find

Reports for litigation purposes
Quantum reports are prepared on behalf of
solicitors acting for the Claimant, for the Defence or
as Joint Instructions.
These types of reports are used for a medium to
long-term overview of a case. Our reports include an
independent expert opinion and prognosis, as well
as estimated costs for private rehabilitation.
Reports for rehabilitation purposes
Our Prosthetists and Orthotists work alongside
Case Managers and Insurance companies offering
immediate needs assessments, giving an overview
of short to medium term prosthetic or orthotic care
in accordance with the Rehabilitation Code.
These reports are not for use in court proceedings
but are used to instigate a fast, effective
rehabilitation programme.
By using a multidiscipline approach,
incorporating our other rehabilitation services
such as physiotherapy, occupational therapy and
counselling, we are able to encourage a faster
