Assistant Coach Zack Vogelsberg<br />

Zack Vogelsberg is beginning his second season with the Lady Bulldog<br />

basketball program.<br />

During his first season with the Lady Bulldogs, Union recorded a 25-9<br />

overall record and won both the Appalachian Athletic Conference regularseason<br />

and tournament championships. Union also advanced to the NAIA<br />

Division II National Championship Tournament for the third time in school<br />

history.<br />

Prior to coming to Union, Vogelsberg worked at Saint Mary’s University in<br />

Winona, Minn., where he was the assistant women’s basketball coach for one<br />

year. With a young and inexperienced team in 2006-07, Saint Mary’s posted a<br />

7-18 record with a wins coming over Carleton College for the first time in 10<br />

years and against the University of St. Thomas to avenge a 52-point loss with<br />

an eight-point win.<br />

Before his stint at Saint Mary’s, he served one year as the assistant coach at<br />

Frostburg State University in Frostburg, Md., which went 18-10 overall 2005-<br />

06 and advanced to the ECAC South Region Postseason Tournament.<br />

Vogelsberg served three years as the assistant coach at Bethel University in St. Paul, Minn., from 2002-05.<br />

While there, he helped bring a team that had won under five games for seven consecutive seasons to doubledigit<br />

wins by the time of his departure.<br />

A graduate of the University of Iowa with a degree in marketing and a minor in psychology, he is pursuing<br />

Master’s in health and physical education while at Union. During his tenure at Iowa, he served four years as a<br />

manager for the women’s basketball team as well as a practice player.<br />

Head Athletic Trainer Clay Butler<br />

Clay Butler is the head athletic trainer at Union College. A native of St.<br />

Cloud, Fla., Butler has many ties to Kentucky.<br />

He was named as the head athletic trainer in 2006 after serving as an assistant<br />

since 2003.<br />

He came to Union the spring semester of 2002. Since that time, he has<br />

helped as a student assistant, providing coverage for all the athletic teams and<br />

worked in the training room on campus, while maintaining a 3.5 grade-point<br />

average. Butler graduated in May of 2003 with a Bachelor of Science degree<br />

in Health Education, becoming his families third generation to do so.<br />

Prior to coming to Union, he attended the University of Kentucky. He was<br />

a student-athletic trainer for football and baseball the 1999-2000 seasons and<br />

men’s basketball the 2000-2001 season.<br />

In addition to working with collegiate athletics Butler has also worked in the<br />

National Football League. He worked as a student intern for two seasons with<br />

the Cincinnati Bengals. The summer of 2002 he was a student intern trainer for the Arizona Cardinals.<br />

In 2005, Butler received his certification, having obtain his Master’s from Union.<br />

Butler resides in Barbourville and is married to the former Andra Jones.<br />
