DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS 

DARIN S. WILSON 

In February of 

2003, Darin S. Wilson 

was named the 

Director of Athletics 

at Union College. 

Since becoming 

the school’s Director 

of Athletics, Wilson 

has begun improving the college’s athletic 

facilities such as a new press boxes at 

the football and softball facilities, the 

installation of synthetic sports turf at Burch/ 

Nau Field, remodeling of athletic training 

facilities in Robsion Arena as well as several 

other projects. 

Union has enjoyed unprecedented 

success on and off the field of play during 

Wilson’s tenure. Since taking the helm, 

the Union athletic department has won 17 

Applachian Athletic Conference regularseason 

and tournament championships, three 

Midwest Collegiate Cycling Conference 

championships and six NAIA Region XII 

championships. Additionally, 23 Bulldog 

and Lady Bulldogs teams have participated 

in national championship tournaments and 

events. 

Wilson was honored by the Appalachian 

Athletic Conference in 2008 as the league’s 

Athletic Director of the Year. 

In the classroom, Union has had 32 

NAIA Scholar-Athletes and four CoSIDA 

Academic All-America Team members since 

2003. 

In addition, Wilson has revitalized and 

revived once-dormant athletic programs. 

Cross country and men’s tennis were 

reinstated as sponsored sports in 2004-05, 

while women’s tennis, men’s and women’s 

track and field and men’s and women’s 

swimming returned for the 2005-06 

academic year. In 2008-09, bowling will 

make a resurgence after a 30-year absence, 

giving Union 23 intercollegiate programs. 

Prior to accepting the post, Wilson served 

as the head baseball coach, sitting at the 

helm of the Bulldogs for five seasons (1999- 

2003). During that span, Wilson posted 

a 161-106-1 record and was named the 

Mid-South Conference Coach of the Year in 

2001. 

The Versailles, Ky., native originally 

attended the University of Kentucky to play 

baseball, but transferred to Union prior to 

the 1994 season. As a senior, Wilson was 

named the school’s Male Athlete of the Year. 

After graduating cum laude from Union 

in 1996, Wilson joined the Bulldog baseball 

staff as an assistant coach. 

Wilson and his wife, Patti, reside in 

Barbourville. The couple also has one son, 

Drew, and one daughter, Mara.

In 1879 a group of 

progressive citizens followed 

the prompting of Abraham H. 

Harritt, a salesman of school 

desks, and James T. Gibson, 

the owner of a generalmerchandise 

store, to establish 

a college in the Barbourville 

community. W.W. Sawyers 

and James D. Black met in the 

office of Judge J.H. Tinsley 

and formed a stock company 

to launch Union College. 

Black, who later served as 

president of Union from 1910- 

12 and later served as governor 

of Kentucky, is given credit 

CENTENNIAL HALL 

for having named the school 

“Union.” The institution it 

would serve as a unifying influence for the community regardless of church affiliation 

or political differences. The Articles of Incorporation were drawn up on Oct. 18, 1879, 

and provided for the issuance of $20,000 worth of capital stock. The London Echo of 

Dec. 12, 1879, carrying its first announcement of Union, listed the corporation as being 

“designed to fill a long-felt want in eastern Kentucky, eastern Tennessee and western 

Virginia.” 

Union was operated under local leadership for the first few years, but began to 

experience severe financial struggles. On Oct. 25, 1886, the property was “cried off” 

to Green Elliott, who purchased it for Dr. Daniel Stevenson for the sum of $4,425 

with Mrs. Mahala Dowis furnishing the funds. The renowned Kentucky educator had 

been authorized to attend the sale by the Board of Education of the Kentucky Annual 

Conference of The United Methodist Church. 

Union’s athletic mascot, the English Bulldog, was introduced during the fall of 1925. 

The breed, whose ancestors were developed in Britain before the 13th century from the 

British mastiff and other breeds, was used for bullbaiting and dogfighting until these 

sports were outlawed in the 19th century. 

In 1967, the Alpha Phi Omega service fraternity of Union College purchased the first 

living mascot named Mack. He was presented at the Homecoming basketball game that 

same year. A registered English Bulldog, Mack died in 1971. His remains are buried in 

an area adjacent to Union’s current baseball complex. 

During the past seven years, Union College began a major campus renovation 

and building project. Plans included the creation of new student housing, expanded 

academic and athletic centers, and the upgrade of existing facilities. Projects completed 

were the construction of the Stewart-Lyttle Apartments, Sharp Academic Center, Black 

Technology Center and the renovation of Speed Hall. Union’s athletic facilities have 

also received facelifts as well. A new brick backstop erected in 2001 at Sanders Field 

at Jerry W. Carey Baseball Stadium, while a new wooden outfield fence was built in 

2002 with a new outfield wall in 2008. Robsion Arena recently had the floor repainted, 

new scoreboards installed and a new lights, roof and gutters installed. Two new tennis 

courts were constructed, while the existing four were resurfaced, and a new press box 

was constructed at Burch/Nau Field (football) in 2003 and synthetic sports turn inlaid 

in 2007. In 2008, Union opened up a new weight-room facility as well. 

Union offers 27 majors in the undergraduate curriculum, which lead to a bachelor’s 

degree. Minors are also available in many of these programs. In addition, the college 

offers pre-professional programs that are affiliated with other institutions and agencies. 

Union College also boasts a graduate program The college offers graduate work in 

education leading to a Master’s degree, Fifth-Year Certificate and Rank I Certificate. 

How many independent, liberal arts colleges in the Commonwealth of Kentucky can 

boast of a Nobel Prize-winning graduate? Union College can certainly lay claim to that. 

Dr. Phillip A. Sharp, the co-winner of the 1993 Nobel Prize for medicine, received his 

bachelor’s degree from Union in 1966. 

Campus life starts from the moment the students arrive on campus and continues 

through the end of the school year. Students can participate in more than 30 campus 

organizations such as music, theatre productions, sports, student government, religious 

activities and clubs.

2007-08 Union Athletics Review 

The 2007-2008 year for Union College athletics 

proved to be a memorable one. 

Union posted its highest finish ever in the U.S. 

Sports Academy Directors’ Cup NAIA Standings by 

placing 28th. In the AAC Duard Walker All-Sports 

Trophy standings, Union posted a second-place finish, 

which also marks the best finish in the six years Union 

has been a part of the conference. Also, Union Director 

of Athletics Darin S. Wilson was named the 2008 AAC 

Athletic Director of the Year. 

In all, Union had nine team national championship 

appearances, seven AAC Championships, three Region 

XII Championship, six All-Americans, 10 conference 

Players of the Year, three Region XII Players of the 

Year, 61 All-Conference award winners, and 13 All- 

Region XII performances. 

Union coaches collected three AAC and Region 

XII Coach of the Year awards as well. The women’s 

swim team added the NAIA Scholar Team award, 

four student-athletes were Daktronics-NAIA Scholar 

Athletes, while two others made the CoSIDA Academic 

All-America Team. Academic All-Conference nods 

went to 23 Union athletes. 

Marty Popham, from the baseball squad, and Brooke 

Smith, a member of the women’s basketball team, were 

named the Union Male and Female Athletes of the 

Year. Popham was a NAIA All-American First Team 

pitcher and selected in the 20th round by the Cleveland 

Indians during the 2008 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. Smith 

captured the Appalachian Athletic Conference Player of the Year award en 

route to a nod on the NAIA All-American Third Team. Allison Fowler received 

the Danny Drinkard Award which represents excellence on the field of play as 

well as in the classroom and community. Fowler was also a part of the Union 

women’s basketball team and was named the 2008 AAC Tournament MVP and 

AAC Defensive Player of the Year. 

MEN’S & WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY 

• Brandon Kibert qualified for the NAIA National Championship. He finished 

145th after earning All-AAC and All-Region XII honors 

• Kandy Hubbard broke the school record four times which now sits at 21:48 

• Kibert and Hubbard were 2007 Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes 

CYCLING 

• Union finished fourth at the NCCA Division II National Championship 

• The fourth-place finish is the third top-five finish in a row and sixth overall for 

the program 

• Freshman Zach Winn won the MidWest Collegiate Cycling Conference 

Division II Rider of the Year 

VOLLEYBALL (34-15, 16-2 AAC) 

• AAC Regular-Season Champions 

• Monica Moreland won the Region XII and AAC Player of the Year awards 

along with the AAC Setter and Freshman of the Year honors 

• Stephanie Pateman and Marlee Cooper were All-Region XII and All-AAC

• The team was ranked as high as 29th nationally 

WOMEN’S SOCCER (7-8-2, 3-3-1 AAC) 

• Heather Jaques was named to the NAIA All-American honorable mention list

• Karla Goncalves was an All-AAC player 

MEN’S SOCCER (10-7-1, 1-5-1 AAC) 

• Union earned 10 wins for the first time since 2001 season 

• Included in the 10 wins was a AAC Tournament quarterfinal victory 

• Seniors Patrick Bueno and Dustin Isom were named to the All-AAC team 

FOOTBALL (4-7, 2-3 MSC EAST) 

• Joey Waters passed his way to the Mid-South Conference East Offensive Player 

of the Year and numerous school records 

• Union put six players on the All-MSC East First Team, four on the offensive 

side with two on the defensive team 

• The Bulldogs ended the season with a 28-21 win at Georgetown snapping a 

23-game losing streak to the Tigers 

• Patrick O’Neal made 143 tackles for the single-season record 

MEN’S BASKETBALL (19-13, 8-10 AAC) 

• Aaron Dunaway was named to the All-AAC Second Team 

• Chris Stunson became the 26th player in Union history to join the 1,000-point 

club 

• Stunson added a spot on the All-AAC defensive team 

• Michael Hester was a member of the All-AAC Freshmen Team 

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL (25-9, 15-3 AAC) 

• AAC Regular-Season Co-Champions and AAC Tournament Champions 

• Advanced to the NAIA Division II National Tournament 

• Tim Curry passed the 200 career win plateau and won his 100th game at Union

• The 48 wins tied the 2006 squad for the most in program history and is the 

fourth-straight 40-plus win year under Bart Osborne 

• Osborne surpassed the 200-win mark, making him Union’s winningest coach in 

program history 

• Marty Popham led NAIA in wins with 17 and was named a NAIA First Team 

All-American with two others earning honorable mentions

Robsion Arena 


Constructed in 1963, the John M. Robsion Jr. 

Memorial Arena has served as the home court 

for the Lady Bulldog basketball program since 

the 1978-79 season. The arena’s seating capacity 

is 1,800, and the gymnasium has recently 

undergone some renovation. 

The gym floor was repainted and the new 

3-point line for men’s basketball was added. 

During the past year, the lobby and gym areas 

have been total repainted. New scoreboards and 

lighting system were installed for the 2003- 

04 season as well as a new roof and gutters. 

Also, all of the locker room areas received vast 

improvements. 

Previously, the only major alteration had to 

do with the reserved seating section in the lower 

level portion of the gym. 

The reserved seating section once consisted 

of folding chairs. However, orange, chair-back seats with black armrests have replaced the folding chairs. In addition, there are 

handrails dividing each aisle in the reserved seating section. 

Besides the gym, Robsion Arena also houses an indoor swimming pool, an athletic training room, lockerrooms for the the men’s 

basketball, women’s basketball, volleyball and swimming and visiting teams and classrooms and offices for the Health, Physical 

Education and Recreation Department. 

Originally, the building was known as the Physical Education Building. The name was changed to the John M. Robsion Jr. Memorial 

Arena in 1990 to honor one of the school’s alums and long-time supporter. 

Robsion was a 1919 graduate of the old Union College Academy. Though his professional and political life took him all over the 

world, Robsion never forgot his roots and ties to Union as he remained a loyal supporter of the school. 

Born in 1904, the Barbourville, Ky. native attended and graduated from George Washington University in 1926. He was a congressional 

secretary from 1919-28, and he was admitted to the bar in 1926 and moved to Louisville in 1928. From 1928-35, Robsion 

served as chief of the Law Division of the United States Bureau of Prisons. After practicing law in Louisville for nearly seven 

years, Robsion served in the U.S. Army from 1942-46 and was stationed overseas in Africa, Italy and Austria. Upon his discharge, 

he held a variety posts in the political world, including three terms as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives. Following an 

unsuccessful run as Kentucky gubernatorial candidate in 1959, Robsion practiced law in Louisville and Fort Lauderdale, Fla. until 

his death on Feb. 14, 1990. 

THE UNION COLLEGE WEIGHT ROOM FACILITY 

Union College student-athletes have a new state-of-the-art wellness 

center to help train in and out of season. The renovation of the lower level 

of Soldiers and Sailors Center was completed in the spring of 2008 and 

features two areas, a weight-room and cardio area. 

The revamped weight-room facility is open to all Union students as 

well as faculty and staff during designated times. 

The weight-room portion features 10 power racks with platforms and 

420 pounds per station. Also located in the weight room are leg extension 

and leg curl combo machines, pull down and preacher curl areas. In 

addition, the weight room houses dip racks and free weights ranging from 

five pounds to 120 pounds. 

The cardio area is home to 

treadmills, elliptical and stationary 

bikes along with additional free 

weights from three to 50 pounds. 

Soldiers and Sailors was 

constructed in 1919 as the College’s gymnasium. It contained a swimming pool in the 

basement and at the time of its construction was considered “state-of-the-art.” The pool was 

the first indoor pool in the state of Kentucky. In the early 1960s, a new gymnasium (Robsion 

Arena) was built, and the old gym was turned over to the Drama Department. It was renamed 

the Dramatic Arts Center (DAC), and the gymnasium was converted into a stage. 

Part of the basement area was converted into a coffee shop in the fall of 1973, and it 

remained that way throughout the 1970s. For a period of time in the ‘80s, the building was 

closed because of structural problems. It was reinforced and re-opened as the Intramural 

Center in 1990. In 1994, the area once used as a coffee shop was cleaned up and was used as 

a recycling center before being renovated for the new Wellness Center.

INTERVIEWS - All interviews with Union 

College coaches, student-athletes and staff

conducted outside locker room entrances or on 

the playing surface after a minimal, 10-minute 

cooling off period for participants. 

PRACTICES - Practices are generally open 

to members of the media. Prior knowledge of 

attendance, however, is a much appreciated 

gesture.

game, match or other contest hosted by Union

Stancil has received

earning 38 NAIA-SIDA Publication Awards

Best Cover. In addition, he placed first in the 

NSCAA Writing Contest in the Deadline/ 

Game Story Division in 2005 and third place 

in the CoSIDA’s Fred S. Stabley Sr. District 

IV Writing Contest twice. 

Over the years, Stancil has served as the 

media coordinator for numerous postseason 

tournaments, including most recently the 

2008 Appalachian Athletic Conference 

baseball tournament. He also served as a 

member of the gameday staff for the NAIA 

Football National Championship Game in 

2006 and 2007. 

As Union’s SID, Stancil has had 11 

student-athletes earn CoSIDA Academic 

All-America District IV honors with four 

receiving CoSIDA Academic All-America 

Team honors. 

Stancil is a member of the NAIA-SIDA 

- the NAIA’s Sports Information Directors 

Association and College Sports Information 

Directors of America (CoSIDA). 

Also, Stancil served as the NAIA Region 

XII Information Director from 2005-08 and 

is an At-Large Representative on the NAIA- 

SIDA Board of Directors. 

Stancil is married, and he and his wife, 

Genople, have two children - a son, Jayson, 

and a daughter, Haylee.

Gene Renfro 

Gene Renfro is

Among his responsibilities, Renfro will 

assist in media relations for all 23 of Union’s 

athletic programs as well as writing releases, 

compiling statistics, website maintenance 

and producing and publishing media guides. 

Renfro earned his bachelor’s from 

Milligan in 2005 and his master’s in sports 

management from East Tennessee State 

Univeristy. 

Renfro is a member of both the NAIA- 

SIDA and CoSIDA.

2008-09 Lady Bulldog Preview 


The 2008-09 season appears to be shaping up as another 

memorable campaign for the Union College Lady 

Bulldogs. 

Union is coming off back-to-back Appalachian Athletic 

Conference Tournament championships and consecutive NAIA 

Division II National Championship Tournament appearances. 

In addition, the Lady Bulldogs only lost one key member to last 

year’s squad that went 25-9 overall and 15-3 in the Appalachian 

Athletic Conference. 

“Obviously, we’ve got quite a bit of experience returning, 

which is something that we haven’t had here in the past,” said 

Union coach Tim Curry. “Although we lost one key player, she 

was a big contributor in regards to the numbers she put up.” 

The player in question is Allison Fowler, who finished her 

career second in program history in points (1,427), assists (421) 

and steals (268). She also ranks ninth all-time in rebounding 

(425). 

While trying to fill the void left by Fowler will not be easy, 

this is not a new situation for the Lady Bulldogs. Heading into 

the 2007-08 season, Union had to find a replacement for Andrea 

Hillard, who is the program’s all-time leader in assists (654) 

and steals (321) and ranks fifth all-time in rebounding (567) and 

sixth in scoring (1,308). 

“We were in the same position the year before, having 

to replace Andy, and obviously, we were able 

to do that with the returning players we had,” 

Curry said. “That’s part of the evolution of a 

college basketball team. You’ll always have 

to replace somebody in your program. It’s 

just part of life.” 

Still, Union has plenty of experience returning, 

including four starters from the 2007-08 squad and 

seven players who made back-to-back trips to the 

national tournament. 

Curry’s biggest concern for the 2008-09 season is 

complacency. 

“One of the biggest fears you have as a coach is that 

a team just expects to win rather than doing the things it 

takes to win,” the Lady Bulldog coach explained. 

POINT GUARD 

Carley Blankenship (Lexington, Ky.) is 

back for her junior season after starting all 

34 games last season at point, averaging 

10.3 points per game and dishing 

out 116 assists. The 5-foot-5 guard 

really turned up her game during 

the conference tournament as she 

had 45 points, nine rebounds and 

six assists in landing on the All- 

Tournament Team. 

“Carley had a great year last 

year, and there’s no doubt she can 

handle the pressure of running the 

point,” Curry said. “She just needs to be 

more consistent in the things she provides as 

the point guard.” 

That said, Curry is more concerned about who will

handle the point when Blankenship is not in the game. 

Right now, Blankenship’s backups have been out of 

commission for various reasons. Freshman Nikki Jeck (Berea, 

Ky.) is coming off an injury and is not 100 percent yet, while 

freshman Kara Pile (Fairdale, Ky.) spent much of the fall as part 

of the Lady Bulldog golf team and only recently rejoined the 

team on the court. 

Blankenship averaged nearly 28 minutes of playing time in 

2007-08. 

SHOOTING GUARDS 

The Lady Bulldogs will have a number of options to choose 

from at the shooting guard positions. 

“We return the bulk of our experience at this position,” Curry 

noted. 

Leading the pack is senior Susanna Todd (Eubank, Ky.) who 

now owns every 3-point record in program history. Last season, 

the 5-foot-6 guard hit 48.7 percent from behind the arc, draining 

a school-record 73 treys en route to becoming the all-time leader 

in 3-pointers made. A Third Team All-AAC selection in 2007-08, 

Todd currently has 202 long-range bombs to her credit and is the 

newest member of the 1,000-point club. 

Junior Ashley Lunsford (Orlando, Ky.) started 31 of 34 

contests last season, averaging 8.24 points and 5.41 rebounds. At 

5-foot-9, Lunsford showed her versatility by also dishing out 106 

assists and stealing 41 balls. 

Juniors Allyson Campassi (Frankfort, Ky.) and Jessica 

Baker (Canmer, Ky.) saw considerable 

at the different guard positions. 

Campassi averaged 4.54 points per 

game and made 40.8 percent (29 

of 71) from 3-point range. Baker, 

meanwhile, averaged 4.91 points 

per game and had 59 assists 

and 41 steals to her credit.

duo also combined to pull down 153 rebounds. 

Junior Tara Tucker (Whitley City, Ky.) also saw some playing 

time last season, averaging 1.29 points in limited action. 

POST 

Brooke Smith (Pineville, Ky.) put together arguably one of 

the best individual seasons in program history last season as a 

sophomore. All the 6-foot forward/center did was set the singlegame 

records for points (54) and field goals made (20) as well 

as eclipse the single-season marks for points (778), field goals 

made (287) and free throws made (188). Smith also joined the 

1,000-point club. 

For her efforts, Smith racked up the accolades. She was named 

to the NAIA All-American Third Team, the AAC Player of the 

Year, twice named the AAC Player of the Week and the NAIA 

Player of the Week once. In addition, Smith made the 2008 

WBCA/State Farm NAIA All-Region 6 Team. 

“Brooke fits our system perfectly, and she’s got a tremendous 

work ethic which is not an easy thing to find,” Curry said of 

Smith, who averaged 22.9 points and 7.38 rebounds per 

game. She also blocked 65 shots and had 34 

steals. “We expect bigger things out of her. 

And given her last two years, that is a lot to 

ask.” 

Smith already ranks fifth on the all-time scoring list 

with 1,357 career points and should move up to second 

within the first week or so of the season. 

What will help improve Smith’s game is the added 

depth to the post positions. 

Senior Carrie Bistline (Frankfort, Ky.) missed 

the majority of the 2007-08 season due to medical 

reasons. Seeing action in 12 games and starting 

three, the 6-foot forward/ 

center averaged 4.67 

points and 2.67 

rebounds to go 

along with seven 

blocks.

Bulldogs added 

freshman Rachel 

Underwood (Bremen, 

Ky.) to the mix. The 

6-foot-2 center helped Muhlenberg 

North High to a 24-9 record and to the 3 rd Region 

championship game last season. 

“With the added depth down in the paint, it will 

help open things up more for Brooke,” said Curry. 

“Teams won’t be able to focus on solely her. If they 

do, we have the personnel to take advantage of the 

situation.” 

THE AAC 

Having been a part of the Appalachian 

Athletic Conference for 13 years now, 

Curry says the league is as tight as ever 

from top to bottom. 

“The conference continually has 

gotten stronger and deeper every year, and there’s no question 

that that’s the case this year,” he said. 

The Lady Bulldog coach said that this year’s race for the 

championship could be tightest one in a long team, adding that 

the regular-season champion could have five or six conference 

losses. 

According to the coaches’ preseason poll, Curry isn’t alone in 

that thinking. While Union is the favorite, it garnered only six 

of the 10 first-place votes and 96 total points. Milligan (Tenn.) 

College received three first-place votes and 83 total points. 

King (Tenn.) College, Covenant (Ga.) College and Tennessee 

Wesleyan College rounded out the Top 5 and were separated by 

a total of four points. 

Montreat (N.C.) College and Bryan (Tenn.) College came in 

sixth and seventh and were separated by just three points, while 

Bluefield (Va.) College and Virginia Intermont College tied for 

eighth. UVa-Wise rounded out the field in 10 th . 

THE 2008-09 SCHEDULE 

The road back to the AAC championship and 

to the national tournament will not be an 

easy one. The Lady Bulldogs have games 

against five schools which advanced to the 

NAIA Division II National Tournament 

last season and will play 10 games 

against teams that were received 

votes in the final poll last 

season. 

In addition, Union has 

five games slated against 

teams from the Mid- 

South Conference, a 

NAIA Division I 

league. To make 

things even 

tougher, 13 

of the team’s 

first 17 games – 

including three 

of its first four 

conference games, are 

on the road. 

“If you want to 

compete nationally, 

you have to play 

those people,” said 

Curry. “That’s part of 

life of a team that wants 

to be considered a Top 25 

program year-in and yearout.” 

Union will open the season Nov. 

4 at St. Catherine’s (Ky.) College. 

The Lady Bulldogs will host their annual 

tournament Nov. 7-8 and take on Midway 

(Ky.) College and Ohio Dominican University. 

On Nov. 19, Union opens conference play at 

UVa-Wise.

Head Coach Tim Curry 


Tim Curry is heading into his eighth 

season at the helm of Union College 

Lady Bulldog basketball program. 

The Columbia, Ky. native became the 

program’s seventh head coach in March 

of 2001, and he is the first male to ever 

hold the position. 

In just seven seasons at Union, Curry 

has taken the Lady Bulldog program 

to new heights as he owns a 125-104 

record while at Union in becoming the 

program’s winningest coach and a 217- 

216 career coaching record. In 2002-03 

alone, Union set a program record for 

wins in a season with 25 and a school-record for most 3-pointers made 

in a season with 296. The Lady Bulldogs won the Appalachian Athletic 

Conference Tournament and advanced to the NAIA Division II National 

Championship Tournament for the first time in school history. Union 

made a return visit the the national tournament in 2006-07 as it upset 

the top three seeds in the AAC Tournament to win the title and earn an 

automatic berth. 

The 2007-08 season saw the Lady Bulldogs win both the regularseason 

and tournament championships as they advanced to the NAIA 

Division II National Championship Tournament for the second year in 

a row and third overall. Union tied the school mark for wins as it went 

25-9. 

Curry arrived at Union College after serving six seasons as the Head 

Women’s Basketball Coach at Bluefield College in Bluefield, Va. During 

his tenure at Bluefield, the Lady Rams enjoyed the most success in the 

history of the women’s basketball program. Curry departed Bluefield 

as the winningest coach in the programs history while leading the Lady 

Rams to their first-ever national rankings. 

While at Bluefield, Curry also served as the Assistant Director of 

Athletics and Head Men’s Golf Coach following a two-and-a-half 

year stint as Interim Director of Athletics at the Appalachian Athletic 

Conference school. 

A 1989 graduate of Lindsey Wilson College in Columbia, Kentucky, 

Curry began his coaching career at his alma mater in several different 

positions including Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach, Assistant 

Baseball Coach, and Head Women’s Softball Coach. Curry also spent 

one season at St. Catharine Junior College in Springfield, Kentucky as 

the Head Women’s Basketball Coach and Head Baseball Coach. 

Curry is married to the former Susan Feltner of Manchester, Kentucky 

and they reside in Manchester with their son, Jacob Austin, and daughter, 

Madison Leigh.

Assistant Coach Zack Vogelsberg 

Zack Vogelsberg is beginning his second season with the Lady Bulldog 

basketball program. 

During his first season with the Lady Bulldogs, Union recorded a 25-9 

overall record and won both the Appalachian Athletic Conference regularseason 

and tournament championships. Union also advanced to the NAIA 

Division II National Championship Tournament for the third time in school 

history. 

Prior to coming to Union, Vogelsberg worked at Saint Mary’s University in 

Winona, Minn., where he was the assistant women’s basketball coach for one 

year. With a young and inexperienced team in 2006-07, Saint Mary’s posted a 

7-18 record with a wins coming over Carleton College for the first time in 10 

years and against the University of St. Thomas to avenge a 52-point loss with 

an eight-point win. 

Before his stint at Saint Mary’s, he served one year as the assistant coach at 

Frostburg State University in Frostburg, Md., which went 18-10 overall 2005- 

06 and advanced to the ECAC South Region Postseason Tournament. 

Vogelsberg served three years as the assistant coach at Bethel University in St. Paul, Minn., from 2002-05. 

While there, he helped bring a team that had won under five games for seven consecutive seasons to doubledigit 

wins by the time of his departure. 

A graduate of the University of Iowa with a degree in marketing and a minor in psychology, he is pursuing 

Master’s in health and physical education while at Union. During his tenure at Iowa, he served four years as a 

manager for the women’s basketball team as well as a practice player.

Head Athletic Trainer Clay Butler 

Clay Butler is the head athletic trainer at Union College. A native of St. 

Cloud, Fla., Butler has many ties to Kentucky. 

He was named as the head athletic trainer in 2006 after serving as an assistant 

since 2003. 

He came to Union the spring semester of 2002. Since that time, he has 

helped as a student assistant, providing coverage for all the athletic teams and 

worked in the training room on campus, while maintaining a 3.5 grade-point 

average. Butler graduated in May of 2003 with a Bachelor of Science degree 

in Health Education, becoming his families third generation to do so. 

Prior to coming to Union, he attended the University of Kentucky. He was 

a student-athletic trainer for football and baseball the 1999-2000 seasons and 

men’s basketball the 2000-2001 season. 

In addition to working with collegiate athletics Butler has also worked in the 

National Football League. He worked as a student intern for two seasons with 

the Cincinnati Bengals. The summer of 2002 he was a student intern trainer for the Arizona Cardinals. 

In 2005, Butler received his certification, having obtain his Master’s from Union. 

Butler resides in Barbourville and is married to the former Andra Jones.

The Appalachian Athletic Conference 

(AAC) is an ten-member conference 

sanctioned by the National Association 

of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). 

The league has members in Georgia, 

Kentucky, North Carolina, Tennessee and 

Virginia. 

The AAC participates in Division 

II in men’s and women’s basketball 

and sponsors six men’s sports and six 

women’s sports. For men, the conference 

offers championships in: baseball, 

basketball, cross country, golf, soccer 

and tennis. For women, championships 

are awarded in: basketball, cross country, 

soccer, softball, tennis and volleyball. 

In May of 2003, the AAC selected John 

Sullivan as its first-ever Commissioner. 

Prior to taking the post, Sullivan served 

as Montreat College’s athletic director for 

six years and was named AAC and NAIA 

Region XII Athletic Director of the Year 

in 2000.

Union Tabbed as Preseason Favorite in 2008-09 

Union College is the favorite to win the Appalachian Athletic 

Conference in 2008-09, according to the AAC Women’s Basketball 

Coaches’ Poll released Wednesday. 

The Lady Bulldogs posted a 25-9 overall record and went 15- 

3 in league play in 2007-08 in winning a share of the regularseason 

championship. Union also has won the last two conference 

tournament championships. 

Union garnered six of the 10 first-place votes and tallied 96 

total points. Milligan (Tenn.) College collected three first-place 

votes and 83 total points in coming in second. Rounding out the 

Top 5 are Covenant (Ga.) College, King (Tenn.) College and 

Tennessee Wesleyan College. King shared the regular-season 

conference title with Union in 2007-08 and advanced to the 

tournament championship game. Tennessee Wesleyan received 

the remaining first-place vote. 

Montreat (N.C.) College, Bryan (Tenn.) College, Bluefield 

(Va.) College, Virginia Intermont College and UVa-Wise make 

up the rest of the field. 


The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics 

In searching for the NAIA’s place 

in the history of sports and higher 

education, several consistencies 

are revealed. Among them is the 

dedication to academic achievement 

above athletic excellence. Also 

apparent is the organization’s role 

as a trailblazer in providing equal 

opportunities for all student-athletes. 

Above all, there is an expectation of 

ethical behavior and a commitment 

to scholarship, sportsmanship and 

leadership. 

It is paradoxical that such a lasting, 

dynamic contribution to collegiate 

sports began with a mundane note 

in the first recorded history of the 

Association: “The first general session 

of the ‘Organizing Convention’ 

of the National Association of 

Intercollegiate Basketball (NAIB) 

was held in the Phillips Hotel, Kansas 

City, Missouri, at 10 a.m., Sunday, 

March 10, 1940.” 

But the seed from which the NAIB sprouted 

was planted two blocks away at Municipal 

Auditorium. It was there in 1937 that a men’s 

basketball tournament tipped off which has 

become the longest continuous national 

collegiate tournament in any sport. Further, out 

of that small-college basketball tournament, 

and the NAIB, grew an Association that 

now includes more than 360 colleges and 

universi ties and conducts two dozen national 

championship events. 

The tournament was the brainchild of Emil 

S. Liston, Dr. James Naismith, Frank Cramer, 

and a group of Kansas City business leaders 

who wanted to provide Kansas City-area fans 

with exciting amateur competition and to 

provide a framework for small colleges and 

universities to determine a national basketball 

champion. 

The original eight-team tournament expanded 

to 32 teams in 1938 and suspended play only 

for World War II in 1944 before 16 teams 

were invited the following year and the field 

got back to full strength by 1946. Qualifying 

tournaments became mandatory at the district 

level in 1951. 

In 1948, the NAIB affirmed its commitment 

to equality by becoming the first national 

organization to offer intercollegiate postseason 

opportunities to black student-athletes. 

Unprecedented action was taken in 1953 when 

historically black institutions were voted into 

membership. 

One year previous to the inclusion of 

historically black institutions, another form of

expansion occurred. In 1952, as a result of the 

expressed desires of the member institutions, 

appropriate steps were taken by which the 

NAIB was transformed into the National 

Association of Intercollegiate Athletics 

(NAIA), and the first all-encompassing set of 

rules and standards was adopted. 

With the Association’s new name came the 

addition of national championships in golf, 

tennis and outdoor track and field. Football, 

cross country, baseball and swimming and 

diving were added to the championships 

calendar in 1956. Wrestling (1958), soccer 

(1959), bowling (1962-78), gymnastics (1964- 

84), indoor track and field (1966) and men’s 

volleyball (1969-80) were added later. 

Another significant step occurred in 1957 

when the Association’s headquarters moved 

from the campus of George Pepperdine College 

in Los Angeles to Kansas City to better serve 

the membership from a centralized location. 

Two major changes were made during the 

1970s. An extensive study was completed in 

1970 which paved the way for two divisions 

of football. In 1997, football was consolidated 

to one division again as the Football Coaches 

Association cited a narrowing gap between 

enrollment size and philosophy of the two 

divisions. In 1976, the men’s basketball 

tournament was moved from the confines of 

the Municipal Auditorium to Crosby Kemper 

Arena, also in Kansas City, marking the first 

time since 1937 that the tournament had been 

held in a different arena. 

The NAIA revolutionized national collegiate 

athletics with the establishment of 

athletics programs for women on 

August 1, 1980. Official notice 

on that date followed a mail vote 

by the membership on May 1 

that supported becoming the first 

organization to offer collegiate 

athletics to both men and women. 

Championships for women began 

that year with basketball, cross 

country, gymnastics, indoor and 

outdoor track and field, softball, 

tennis and volleyball. Soccer 

was added in 1984, and golf was 

included in 1995. 

Another important chapter in 

the history of the NAIA unfolded 

in 1992 when the Association 

voted to move its headquarters 

from Kansas City to Tulsa. On 

August 1, 1993, the NAIA opened 

its doors in Tulsa and began a new 

era. Moving with the national 

office was the Division I Men’s 

Basketball National Championship which had 

been held in Kansas City for 56 years. 

During the 1993 NAIA National Convention 

in Atlanta, the waves of change once again 

washed over the Association. The membership 

voted to institute affiliated conference and 

regional groupings and discontinue the use 

of district play as a means of qualification for 

national championships. 

Since 1937, the NAIA has administered 

programs and championships in proper balance 

with the overall educational experience. In 

2000, the NAIA reaffirmed its purpose to 

enhance the character-building aspects of 

sport. Through Champions of Character, 

the NAIA seeks to create an environment in 

which every student-athlete, coach, official 

and spectator is committed to the true spirit 

of competition through five tenets: respect, 

integrity, responsibility, servant leadership and 

sportsmanship. 

Everything has come full circle. The NAIA 

relocated its National Office in July of 2001 

to Olathe, Kansas, just miles from Gardner 

where the idea for the small-college basketball 

tournament gave rise to the NAIA. Now, 

nearly 65 years after that initial tournament, 

the NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball 

National Championship returned to Municipal 

Auditorium, the arena that was home to so 

many memories from 1937-74. 

In July of 2007, the National Office moved 

once again, but not too far from Olathe. The 

NAIA relocated its headquarters to downtown 

Kansas City, Mo., as it returned to its roots. 



2007-08 Season In Review 


BACK-TO-BACK CHAMPIONSHIPS: 

Union College collected its third 

Appalachian Athletic Conference 

Tournament championship in 2008, 

giving the Lady Bulldogs back-to-back 

tournament titles. Union takes things a 

step further in 2007-08 by winning a share 

of the regular-season crown with a 15-3 

conference mark, giving the program its 

first-ever regular-season championship. 

Entering the AAC Tournament as the 

No. 2 seed, Union motored through the 

field to defeat No. 7 seed Montreat (N.C.) 

College 80-63 and No. 3 seed Milligan 

(Tenn.) College 76-67 to advance to the 

finals. In the championship game, the 

Lady Bulldogs overcame a seven-point 

halftime deficit to record a 71-61 victory 

over top-seeded King (Tenn.) College, 

securing the title and an automatic 

berth to the NAIA Division II National 

Championship Tournament. 

Allison Fowler was named the 

Tournament MVP, while Brooke Smith 

and Carley Blankenship made the All- 


STILL SEEKING A WIN AT 

NATIONALS: Making its third trip to 

Sioux City, Iowa in six years, Union is 

still in search of its first win in the NAIA 

Division II National Championship 

Tournament. The Lady Bulldogs entered 

the 32-team tournament as a No. 6 seed 

in their bracket, opening up against No. 3 

Concordia (Neb.) University. 

However, Union was plagued by fouls 

and turnovers as Concordia posted the 

84-64 decision. Union opened the game 

hitting its first three shots for an 8-2 lead 

with 18:43 on the clock. Susanna Todd 

and Allison Fowler each hit back-to-back 

3-pointers, and Fowler hit a layup to give 

Union the early advantage. 

However, Concordia fought back and 

then used a 10-2 run to open up a 29-19 

lead with 6:54 remaining. Concordia 

continued to add to its lead as it took a 41- 

27 lead into the half. 

In the second half, it was more of the 

same as Concordia led by as much as 

25 points (70-45) en route to the 84-64 

victory. 

Brooke Smith led the team with 18 

points, nine rebounds and three blocks. 

BANNER YEAR FOR BROOKE: 

Brooke Smith had a season for the ages 

in 2007-08. The 6-foot center/forward 

became the first player in program history 

to make the NAIA All-American Team not 

as an honorable mention as she landed on 

the Third Team. 

In addition, she was named the 

Appalachian Athletic Conference Player 

of the Year and to the 2008 State Farm/ 

WBCA NAIA All-Region 6 Team. 

Smith garnered the accolades for her 

record-setting season as she scored a 

single-season record 778 points last 

season, averaging 22.9 points per game. 

She also hauled in 251 rebounds for a 7.31 

per game average. In addition, Smith set 

the single-season records for most field 

goals made (287) and free throws made 

(188). 

NEWEST 1,000-POINT CLUB 

MEMBERS: The Lady Bulldogs added 

three new members to the 1,000-point 

club – Allison Fowler, Brooke Smith and 

Susanna Todd. 

Fowler netted her 1,000 th career point in 

a 79-60 win over then-No. 25 Berea (Ky.) 

College on Nov. 13, 2007. She finished 

the season and her career as the program’s 

second all-time leading scorer with 1,427 

points. 

Smith was next to reach the plateau, 

picking up her 1,000 th career point in 

an 81-65 win over Virginia Intermont 

College on Jan. 12, 2008. Smith ended 

the season as the fifth-leading scorer in 

program history with 1,357 points. 

On Feb. 16, 2008, Todd joined the club 

when she recorded her 1,000 th career point 

in 78-70 win over Milligan. The 5-foot-6 

guard ranks 11 th all-time in scoring with 

1,069 career points. 

GAME FOR THE AGES: On Dec. 

29, 2007, Union and Berea played in a 

wild, fast-paced, action-packed contest 

that resulted in a number of school and 

national records as the Lady Bulldogs won 

127-116. 

The teams set a NAIA Division II 

record for most points scored by both 

teams in a game, and Berea set the mark 

for most points scored by a losing team. 

Meanwhile, Union set the program record 

for most points scored in a game. 

The Lady Bulldogs nearly set the record 

for most points in a half but missed by 

one points. Union tallied 75 second-half 

points, one shy of the record of 76 held 

by Tusculum (Tenn.) College. Tusculum 

set the mark on Jan. 25, 1993, against 

Bluefield (Va.) College. 

Brooke Smith shattered the singlegame 

scoring record as she netted 54 

points and made a school-record 20 field 

goals. The previous program record was 

42 set by Malissa Hutchins back in 

during the 1987-88 season. The men’s 

basketball record is 45 points, which was 

set by Fred Calloway back during the 

1987-88 season as well. 

NEW 3-POINT QUEEN: Susanna Todd 

wrapped up the remaining 3-point records 

she didn’t already own. Heading into the 

2007-08 season, Todd already owned the 

single-game (8) and a share of the singleseason 

(66) records. Last season, she not 

only padded the single-season record, but 

Todd also added the career and singleseason 

3-point field-goal percentage 

marks to her résumé. 

Todd buried 73-of-150 from long range 

for a 48.7 shooting percentage from 

behind the arc. She finished the year with 

202 career 3-pointers made, besting the 

old mark of 186. 

COACHING MILESTONES: Head 

coach Tim Curry reached a pair of 

milestones during the 2007-08 campaign. 

On Dec. 11, 2007, he collected his 200 th 

career coach victory. A couple weeks later, 

Curry became the winningest coach in 

program history as he won his 112 th game 

at the helm of the Lady Bulldogs. 

Curry ended the season with a 217-216 

overall record and is 125-104 at Union. 

LADY BULLDOG HONOR ROLL: 

A number of Lady Bulldogs racked up 

honors during the season. Both Brooke 

Smith and Allison Fowler earned 

Appalachian Athletic Conference Player 

of the Week honors with Smith winning it 

twice and was named the NAIA Player of 

the Week once. 

In addition to Smith being named the 

AAC Player of the Year and making the 

All-AAC First Team, Fowler made the 

Second Team and Susanna Todd the 

Third Team. Fowler was also tabbed as 

the AAC Defensive Player of the Year as 

well as the Tournament MVP. Smith and 

Carley Blankenship also made the All- 


Fowler was also recognized as a 2008 

EPSN the Magazine CoSIDA Academic 

All-America First Team member. She and 

Carrie Bistline were named Daktronics- 

NAIA Scholar-Athletes. Smith, Fowler 

and Bistline also landed on the AAC All- 

Academic Team. 


2008 NAIA Division II National Championship Tournament 

SIOUX CITY, Iowa - Four players hit 

double figures as third-seeded Concordia 

(Neb.) University netted an 84-64 victory 

over Union College on Wednesday 

(March 12, 2008) in the opening round of 

the NAIA Women’s Basketball Division II 

National Championship Tournament. 

Union finishes the season with a 25-9 

overall record, while Concordia (25-6 

overall) moves on to face Davenport 

(Mich.) University in the round of 16 

Friday. 

Fouls and turnovers plagued Union as it 

committed 28 fouls and Concordia scored 

20 points off of Union’s 21 miscues. 

Union also had three players foul out 

while another picked up four. 

On the flip side, Concordia was called 

for 16 fouls and turned the ball over 22 

times, which resulted in just 10 Union 

points. 

Concordia also commanded the boards, 

outrebounding Union 54-40. Jenni Lovegrove 

recorded a double-double with 16 

points and a game-high 10 reobunds.

Despite the hot start, Union struggled 

offensively, making just a third of its shots 

from the field (23-of-69 shots) and from 

3-point range (7-of-21 shots). Union also 

had problems at the foul line as it shot 

57.9 percent (11-of-19 free throws) from 

the charity stripe. 

Brooke Smith (Pineville, Ky.) led 

Union with 18 points, nine rebounds and 

three blocks. Todd chipped in 14 points 

with Fowler adding 12. 

Joining Lovegrove in hitting double 

digits was Whitney Stichka with 18 

points, Melissa Tinkham with 12 and 

Stacy Scheer with 11. 

Concordia made 43.5 percent (27-of-62 

shots) from the field and hit 26-of-38 free 

throws (68.4 percent).
