Kings look for second win of the season
against SPOC

Prez precis—Adam Aberle
This week is building as one of the biggest games of the year. For the first time this century
the Kings will take on Saint Peters Old Collegiate Football Club for premiership
points. The Round 4 Rose Park Dental clash against SPOC is bigger than Ben Hur, and
is proudly sponsored by Dr Peter Noblet. Peter continues to generously sponsor the club
each year and I can highly recommend his services located at 58 Kensington Rd, Rose
Park.
This week is a vitally important game for our club as we are determined to get back on an even standing with 2 wins
and 2 losses for the season. A loss against SPOC is simply not acceptable and our playing group have set themselves
for a big win come Saturday. There will be a bumper crowd at Saints on Saturday as SPOC host a triple header – with
the C Kings also playing at Saints at 12:15pm and the Saints annual “ladies day”. I would encourage all of our female
supporters to get along to the game on Saturday and enjoy the entertainment on offer.
Footy Budget
I know that the Kings players will be out to show the writer of the div2 match pre-views that they have dramatically
underestimated the Kings this week.
Sponsorship
Please be assured that everyone that is kind enough to sponsor the Kings will be personally
thanked in the newsletter, it may take some weeks as I like to keep the sponsorship
thanks to a page. My thanks to the following individuals and businesses for their sponsorship:
John Doherty / Doherty’s Barristers and Solicitors – Dual Player Sponsorship
It’s always a pleasure to go to the footy and catch up with John. He is a terrific man and this year the club is delighted
that he has two sons donning the green and gold guernsey. John has been kind enough to sponsor them both and I thank
him for his ongoing support. Please use Doherty’s Baristers and Solicitors for your legal needs – located at 23 Wright
St contact the office on 8410 8087
Luke Evans / Luke Evans Carpentry – Player Sponsorship
Luke Evans Carpentry is a small carpentry business run by our very own C-Grade co-captain Luke Evans. Their areas
of specialty are pergolas, decks, residential housing (including 1st & 2nd fix carpentry), maintenance & repair jobs.
The theoretical knowledge combined with full trade experience offer them both a leverage you will struggle to find
anywhere else.
Luke's down to earth demeanour, honesty and integrity are pivotal to the success of the business and you can be assured
that any job given to Luke Evans Carpentry will be completed to a high standard without the hassles of the bigger
companies. Small companies are more flexible, reliable and honest. You will experience this first hand the next
time you need any work done by Luke. He can be contacted on 0439 866 328.
Tony Burnett / Contour Extrusions – Player sponsorship
Contour Extrusions have been supplying aluminum extrusions to the building industry for over 20 years now. They are
the leaders in their field and if you have any queries you should contact Tony Burnett on 0412 072 424. My thanks to
Tony for his continued sponsorship of the club.
Mark Winter / www.flamenetwork.com.au – Player Sponsorship
Flame Consulting pride themselves on passion, experience, intensity and warmth. With extensive experience in the
manufacturing, mining and financial sectors, Flame Consulting is the right resource to help build your business. Check
them out online or contact Mark Winter directly on 0412 007 528. My thanks to Mark for his generous contribution.
Roger Rasheed – Player Sponsorship
My thanks to Roger for his support and financial contribution to the club. Roger is sponsoring Paul Wilson this year
whom he says will fail to take to the ground at all due to an old back and body. Roger on the other hand was happy to
train without a shirt on with the lads the other night and says he could easily kick 6 goals a game in the reserves.

Peter Whimpress – Vice Patron Sponsorship
Many will know that Peter held the games record for the club at 366 before Charlie
Prider took over the mantle. Peter is a great Kings man and is a former president of the
club. He now resides in Gawler but is good enough to make the trip down to Haslam
Oval to support the Kings.
Phil Robins – Vice Patron Sponsorship
Phil is a life member of the club, and was the A grade captain during the 1965 premiership. He was also an outstanding
cricket player for the Old Scholars Cricket Club taking out the batting trophy in ’62 and ’63. Thank you Phil for a lifetime
of contributions and your ongoing support.
Good luck to all of the Kings teams on the weekend in what is a vitally important game for all three teams to win.
Make sure you get out to Saints on Saturday and support the green men
Its good to be green
A WORD FROM THE HAFF
Senior Coach Chris Mehaffey
ROUND 3
We hosted the undefeated Adelaide University at home in what would be a tough encounter. We unfortunately
lost captain Sam Fritsch, ruckman Fraser Pinkney, Ollie Winter and Scott Fischer to injury or illness
and brought in Fletcher Doherty, Nick Bentley, Sam Willis and Matt Willis for his first “A” Grade
game…four more changes yet again…very frustrating!
Whilst we didn’t go in at full strength we remained confident we could upset University. It was certainly
a tough day for football with the wind across the ground and some rain, testing all players.
The match failed to reach any great heights. We were poor going into attack, wasting many opportunities
with our slow ball movement, which allowed Uni to work back and cover our forwards making it very
difficult to score.
Uni dominated the dead ball situations and allowing them to have more clean entries into their forward
line than we did. They basically edged away from us all day. To the players credit they kept the intensity
up for four quarters which “limited the loss” to five goals.
Forward entries for the day were 36-34 in Uni’s favour but I think the game could be best summed up by
the last quarter……we had 11 forward entries to their 4…..won the clearances 10 to 7……and scored 6
behinds to their 1.2….that shows the difference.
There was some absolute standout performances on the day led from the back pocket by Charles
“Inspector Gadget arms” Canny who repelled many attacks and ably supported by reliable Glenn Smith
again at centre half back. On-ballers Angus Berry now approaching the best form he has shown in two
years, Alex Holbrook again with his harness around the packs and the ever-cool Ben Way all were standouts.
Mention should go also to Nick Bentley who given a tagging job on their centreman was excellent
causing Uni to reshuffle their structure due to Nick’s effort.
We did have many players down on the day which can be accredited to University’s good play as much as
our below par performance. Unfortunately we relied on too few with six of our players having less than
five possessions for the day and another six having between five and nine. Only three players accumulated
20 possessions…an area we must improve on.

SEASO SO FAR
THE UPSIDE
I would like to add in closing that the players have been working very hard on refining the game plan introduced last
year that is being further developed this year with the assistance of other coaches Mark Crowhurst, Phil Holbrook,
James Pinkney and Justin Staritski.
To the credit of the players they have been diligent in their efforts and their belief in what we are planning to due is
growing every training session. I believe that continued work and belief will bring more confidence and some exciting
football awaits the Club!
THE DOWSIDE
The injury/unavailability list at the Club is staggering with 25 players throughout the Club unavailable last week including
17 players who have played “A” Grade football in Alex Jarvis, Sam Fritsch, Fraser Pinkney, Hugh Winter,
Ollie Winter, Scott Fischer, Sam Franklin, Will Paley, Michael Fisher, Charles Brice, Dan Miller, Blake Sanders, Jack
Wightman, Jack Berry and Simon Thwaites, plus Brad Ingerson and Nick McCann (just starting in the “B” Grade again
after injury). Quite an amazing statistic but hopefully over the next 2 to 3 weeks we should regain many of the players
making the Club’s sides even stronger.
It should be pointed out that I have looked at the reasons behind these unavailabilities to ensure these are not “caused”
by incorrect training and of these players the reasons are as follows……2 working….6 on holidays….4 ill (2 wisdom
teeth operations) 7 impact/collision injuries from matches and just 6 soft tissue type injuries (1 carried over from last
year). Therefore I do not believe training techniques are of great concern.

This is a real concern with the “A” Grade having 5 changes, “B” Grade having a mammoth
12 changes from Week 2 to weeks 3…..and the “C” Grade about the same. This
instability is very unsettling for everyone in the Club and something that every person
within the Club must address in getting as many players as possible available consistently.
Chris Mehaffy
Senior coach
Reserves…
with Phil Holbrook
A pretty disappointing day in the end—still, with 12 changes from the week before the going was always
going to be tough.
In what was a pretty wet game we were just out classed around the ground. The boys tried hard, with
Neddy Harmer just outstanding and captain Michael Walsh worked his arse off all day. But ultimately we
lacked a bit of determination, highlighted by a lack of second efforts.
First gamers Jake Van der Hoek and Jake Rollins impressed and with a stronger side this week, with effectively
a new midfield, we’ll bounce back against SPOC.
C-Kings 2010
-With Mark Crowhurst
The Mighty Mighty C-Kings came into game two, slightly undermanned. So much so that the coach had to bring his
boots along and even had to fill in the empty spots on the field for a little over a quarter. Let me begin by thanking
Pike, Smith and Evans for coming down from the B-Grade to lend a helping hand.
Although undermanned has its obvious drawbacks, and victory is seemingly harder to obtain, it does make it easier to
fulfil one of the C-Grades main aims in that if you train, you play. Everyone gets a run in the mighty Glamour and so
if you are reading this and feel like a run, come on down to training and get your face out there.
Last week we came up against a quality Uni side. They were bigger than us and had about 35 players on the bench
which meant that they got away from us with the legs in the end. They had us on size which made marking around the
ground and especially contested marks pretty difficult to come by.
In the pouring rain, the coach managed to have all of his magnets wash away and be left with a bunch of blue ink on a
whiteboard. This made tactical positioning rather difficult although in typical C-Grade spirit it made for a very enjoyable
time.
There were some standouts on the weekend. We were very happy to have Fuller back in the side - although he is unavailable
next week - his cool head under pressure, determination and ability to never make a mistake (even in the
wet) make him the ideal candidate for a full day on the ball.
The Duck (Quack) managed to play a blinder. He came off with about 10 minutes to go and star fished the rest of the
game on the grass in the rain, such was his exhaustion. Nevertheless, he gave 110% whilst he was on the field and absolutely
relished the moist conditions. Obviously, as a wet weather bird, this was somewhat expected. Quack.
Caplash showed glimpses of good things to come and even managed to have a shot on goal. For the 4 seconds the ball
was in the air I think the entire C-Glamour were yelling their hearts out except an inconsiderate Uni player decided to
touch the ball on the line. I'm looking forward to Ashtray getting some solid possessions in the future.
Big-Bad-Pedlar, the machine, managed to play a quality game all over the ground. We had him playing "wozza's spot"
for a while but when we moved him (or more, a blurry blue magnet) further up the ground he relished in the paddock
of free space and started to show glimpses of what we might come to expect him in the rest of the season.

Chu-Banga was among the best and show glimpses of possible entry into the B&F this
year. He also told me about 35 times last night how awesome he thought it was that he got
in the best players. Well done Chua!
The team completely fell apart without our trusty manager Maxine and so the scores/goal
kickers/best players may not be that accurate. However it was still a good game and all of
us enjoying getting out there and getting our hands on the leather.
This week we have a triple header against SPOC. The C's will be playing at 12:15 (the same time as the B's) in order to
facilitate us joining in the SPOC ladies day and perhaps even glancing an eye at the score board of the A's every now
and then.
Looking forward to a good tough game against SPOC. We haven't played them for a number of years and we look forward
to giving them a run for their money.
Tool of the week: Coach Crowie wins this week. After sending out the customary 'team message' on a Thursday night,
one of his players returned "not for me". Perplexed for a week, we sent the same player the same text message the next
week, only to get 'I don't know what you're talking about please stop annoying me' back. This was good enough for the
Coach to post in Facebook that said player was a shoe-in for the TOTW award due to his inability to figure out what
was going on. After a few minutes, "...This is Akka isnt it?" received a reply "no you have the wrong number leave me
alone goodnight". This forced an immediate reversal of the award.
Looking forward to next week,
SPIRIT!
By thinker in residence...Declan Gallen
The margin for error at the top of any sport is tiny. As teams develop training methods, tactical advancements and
overall fitness levels the gap between us weekend warriors and the professional elite is growing larger and larger. AFL,
NRL, English Premier League, you name it; teams have never been so fit or so well prepared. These developments do
not always filter down the sporting tree. Teams like the Kings do not have time to train 35 hours a week. We do not
have time to work on structures or game movements to any degree of detail.
But there are some common threads running through all teams no matter where they are or what sport they play. Will
to win and team spirit. These are not things that cannot be coached, cannot be practised nor can they be bought, sold or
traded. Before you enter onto any playing field if you do not want to beat the team that stand in front of you, you may
as well not even bother turning up. If you do not want to put your head over the ball before the next man, or make that
extra ten yards to shepherd your ruckman, then you don't deserve to be on the field.
Now say you are in a closely fought match. Scores have been nip and tuck all day. They move a goal ahead. You claw
it back. There is never more than a kick of a ball between the teams. Clearly you are evenly matched all over the field.
What separates you at the end of the day? Team spirit. It pulls the best teams over seemingly insurmountable obstacles
and makes winning all the sweeter, simply because you have won as a team.
The B grade match against Flinders Park was as good an example of these aforementioned qualities as you are likely to
see anywhere. It certainly was one of the gutsiest performances that I have ever been involved in both my Gaelic and
my three match AFL career. The leadership from the A grade lads and the youthful exuberance from the kids playing
there second ever senior match, was what pulled the Kings over the line. It is no surprise to me that this victory coupled
with the victory for the A grade coincided with the Gentleman's day the Sunday previous. The afternoon spent in the
Whiteman family home was a huge success and it served as a huge bonding session for the whole playing group young
and old. These events serve as shared experiences, they galvanise teams and pay massive dividends over the course of
the season.

SMELLS LIKE TEEN
SPIRIT! CONT.
The day itself, despite early reports to the contrary, was highly civilised and included activities such as chess, charades,
monopoly and everyone's favourite; Pictionary. Ignore accounts saying that there was drunken behaviour and x-rated
antics. Contact was made by the players committee with all the relevant wives and girlfriends and we have been assured
that all participants returned home at respectable hours with their dignity fully intact.
The last three B grade matches have been hugely enjoyable and equally as tough to play in. It was my first game at
Haslam Oval in Round 1 and it surely is not a place for the faint of heart. It’s claustrophobic boundary lines ensure that
the next tackler is never more than five steps away. Your hands have to be clean and sharp. One mistake can lead to
conceding a goal within seconds. My skills were tested all day but this is the environment where you learn and improve
the most. The result against Modbury was disappointing but luckily fortunes improved in Flinders Park. Down to 18
men very early it was back against the wall for the entire second half. Leadership from the likes of Nick Bentley and
Simon Thwaites was inspirational and should prove as an example to all the young guys in our midst.
Unfortunately we got our backsides handed to us on a plate by Adelaide Uni last weekend. No excuses, the better team
won on the day and totally outclassed us all over the field. Wet weather footy is all about wanting the result more than
the other team. Uni seemed to always have more numbers at contests and in support out of defence, whereas we ran
and played as individuals.
There is a big triple header this weekend at St.Peters and with some notable additions to the B grade we will be hopeful
of a return to winning ways.
