Preface<br />

Aristotle University’s School <strong>of</strong> Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g has always put<br />

emphasis on <strong><strong>in</strong>ternational</strong> <strong>cooperation</strong>. This led to numerous<br />

fruitful collaborations and l<strong>in</strong>ks with reputed Universities and<br />

Research Centers all over the world, with obvious benefits for the<br />

School’s personnel and students. Cooperation <strong>in</strong> <strong>education</strong> opened<br />

new paths regard<strong>in</strong>g postgraduate studies <strong>of</strong> our students <strong>in</strong> famous<br />

European and North American Institutes <strong>of</strong> Technology. Furthermore,<br />

opportunities arose for attract<strong>in</strong>g dist<strong>in</strong>guished scientists to<br />

Thessaloniki to teach <strong>in</strong> our School’s postgraduate courses or to<br />

give lectures <strong>in</strong> sem<strong>in</strong>ars. By participat<strong>in</strong>g at <strong><strong>in</strong>ternational</strong> consortia,<br />

colleagues were able to widen their scientific horizon enter<strong>in</strong>g new,<br />

mostly <strong>in</strong>terdiscipl<strong>in</strong>ary, fields <strong>of</strong> research. At the same time, they<br />

were given the chance to f<strong>in</strong>ance their research activities by ensur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

necessary funds, the latter be<strong>in</strong>g essential <strong>in</strong> view <strong>of</strong> the <strong>in</strong>sufficient<br />

resources provided to our School by the Greek government.<br />

The present brochure conta<strong>in</strong>s an overview on the <strong><strong>in</strong>ternational</strong><br />

<strong>cooperation</strong> <strong>of</strong> Aristotle University’s School <strong>of</strong> Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g, the ma<strong>in</strong><br />

emphasis be<strong>in</strong>g on <strong>education</strong>. An important aspect is the bundle<br />

<strong>of</strong> options that our students have for participat<strong>in</strong>g at exchange<br />

programmes with other Technical Universities. Moreover, the role <strong>of</strong><br />

our School <strong>in</strong> relation to major <strong><strong>in</strong>ternational</strong> networks is presented.<br />

The outcome <strong>of</strong> all these activities over the years makes us optimistic<br />

regard<strong>in</strong>g the impression that our <strong><strong>in</strong>ternational</strong> partners have on<br />

the capabilities <strong>of</strong> our students and the level <strong>of</strong> the <strong>education</strong>al<br />

and research work conducted <strong>in</strong> our School. This is <strong>of</strong> particular<br />

importance <strong>in</strong> the present situation which is considered to be critical<br />

for the higher <strong>education</strong> system <strong>in</strong> Greece. Therefore I would like to<br />

express my deep gratitude to all colleagues devot<strong>in</strong>g a considerable<br />

amount <strong>of</strong> time and energy to strengthen our <strong><strong>in</strong>ternational</strong><br />

<strong>cooperation</strong>. Thanks to their effort I am confident that our School will<br />

f<strong>in</strong>d its way <strong>in</strong> the rapidly emerg<strong>in</strong>g European Higher Education Area.<br />
