Harmer’s 250th
eddy Harmer reaches a magical milestone against Walkerville
King’s Commander and Chief Adam Aberle
Last weekend the Kings encountered a very strong PHOS Camden team at home. PHOS
had won their past seven games and were at a maximum strength with all of their A-grade
players available for selection.
The Kings conducted themselves admirably and were ultra competitive against a classy PHOS outfit. The coach of
PHOS Camden, Wayne Weidemann praised our lads, stating that Pembroke were the best team they had faced all year –
high praise indeed.
The C-grade had a memorable victory for Crawford Giles in his 200 th game against PHOS away from home. Well done
to all of the guys for pulling on the boots, performing so well and making it a great day for Crawford to remember.
Round 16 is proudly sponsored by Ranstad – Australia’s recruitment specialists. In 2009 many of the specialist recruitment
agencies (such as Select Industrial, Tanner Menzies, Select Appointments etc) that you would know came as one
under the Randstad name. So whatever industry you specialise in or whatever type of employee you require you can be
sure that Randstad are the people to see. Quality staff are the most important asset your business can have and Randstad
will ensure that all your needs a met. Check them out today online at www.randstad.com.au
Tomorrow the Kings will travel to Walkerville to take on the Cats. The Kings are in great form at present and the fast
flowing and quick moving game is enjoyable to watch. Head out to the Walkerville Recreation Ground on the corner of
Church Tce and Smith St at Walkerville (just around the corner from Chidleys IGA)
Congratulations
Michael ‘Ned’ Harmer will play his 250 th game for the Kings on Saturday. Ned is a true champion of the club, a great
personality and a wonderful role model for the younger guys at the club. Ned is still playing a very high standard of
football and earns his selection in the A-grade team. To be playing at a very high division 2 level at this stage of his career
is testament to Ned’s skill, tenacity, aggression and persistence. We wish Ned all the best for his milestone game on
Saturday.
2005 Premiership Reunion
Saturday week (Saturday August 7) the 2005 Premiership winning C Grade will be having a five year reunion to celebrate
the club’s last premiership. Players are invited to meet at Haslam Oval on the day, support the ‘greenmen’ against
Athelstone and then head to the Kensi to re-live their glory game on the big screen. If you have any queries, please contact
Sam Vickery on 0418 848 951 or sam.vickery@clark-energy.com
Thanks
My thanks to Anthony Lewis, Mark Crowhurst and the Social Committee for organising and running a very successful
and enjoyable cash raffle day at the Kensington Hotel last Sunday. Their efforts contributed close to $4000 to the social
committees fundraising efforts this year, a great job by all.
Centenary Book
Ashley Porter has compiled a marvellous book covering the first 100 years of the Amateur
League in this state. The book obviously covers the Kings OC and Pembroke OS as well
as the rich history of the competition. The book retails for $49.95 and if you would like a
copy, please contact me on the number listed below.
Good luck to Ned and all the green men on Saturday and I look forward to seeing you at the footy.
Neddy this week against Walkerville dons the "Kings" guernsey for his 250th game for the club.
To my reckoning (and I stand to be corrected) that equates to him being in his 14th season with the Club and sees him as
the only remaining premiership player still playing weekly from the premiership years of 1997 and 1998.
I have had the pleasure in coaching Neddy for some of those years and have no hesitation in saying that he is up there
with the most courageous and inspiring players the Club has had. In each of the games he has played he has always
done his best…hard at it, at the bottom of every pack, leading by example whether that be action or voice and never,
never giving in. He has always been and still remains fiercely competitive.
Neddy was always easy to Coach as you always knew what you would get, nothing but 100%. He never questioned
where he would be playing but merely went about his task of giving his best every time. As a premiership player, life
member, former "A" Grade captain and still at his "tender" age of 30 something (I am being nice there), able to get
games in the "A" Grade he shows he still has what it takes to play with the best.
Blessed by a quick wit and funny sense of humour he gains great respect for the manner in which he approaches life and
every contest.
The greatest compliment I could pay him his to liken him to the great "Charlie" Prider.
Not the most skilled player in the side but they have excellent qualities in common...specifically for what they lack in
size they more than made up for in heart.
Neddy you are one of the great "Kingmen", enjoy the day and I hope there are many more passionate games played for
the "Kings".
Well done mate
Cash Raffle - a must have in
2011
The cash raffle was held out the back of the Kensington Hotel and was nothing short of a great day.
Big thankyous go to Anthony Lewis and Chris Eitzen for organising the day and to the Kensi Staff for putting up with
us, especially later in the day. Unfortunately Eitzen now has to replace the Amplifier for the Front Bar speakers after we
were having a great time singing along to Jimmy Barnes in the final hour of the day's proceedings.
We had a sweep on the day organised by Plug so everyone enjoyed a few beers while watching the showdown in between
the ticket draw. The proceedings moved to the front bar of the Kensi after the final ticket had been drawn where
the festivities continued.
The $50 prize was awarded to Michael Chidley who managed to place himself third on the day. The $300 second prize
went to a very grateful Jack Wightman and the big $1000 main prize was awarded to none other than Justin Staritski -
who had to be brought in via telephone conference when we were down to the final five tickets.
Jack Wightman kindly donated his $300 prize in full to the BRICEY, BE STRONG foundation. Justin Staritski also
kindly donated $500 from his winnings to the BRICEY, BE STRONG foundation. The Brice family would like to extend
their a warm thank you to both Jack and Justin for their generous donations.

ROUD 15
We now fronted the inform side of the competition PHOS Camden who had won their last seven on the trot defeating
top sides Adelaide University, Walkerville, Eastern Park and Modbury in that golden run. They now sat second and
went in with an unchanged 21 for the third week on the trot and were, according to their coach, playing their strongest
21 at the club…this would be a real test for us.
We went in losing Fraser Pinkney to injury, Blake Sanders to business and Alex Catford to Fiji. We brought back
Neddy Harmer and Harry Thring and brought in 18-year old Jack Creevy straight out of school for his first “A” Grade
game.
PHOS were huge…not only on strength but also body size with five players who would all have been 192cms-plus and
boasted four players from the State under-23 side this year…a very strong combination.
We started the game well in perfect conditions and with Tom Evans again providing a good target up forward, Alex
Holbrook dominating as a small forward and on baller and Sam Fritsch winning the in and unders. We went in at the
first change five points up but wasted opportunities and three goals that really should have been kicked.
PHOS, a top side as they are, came at us hard in the second quarter and their run through the midfield was decisive.
Tom Wilson was holding sway on his wing and our defence was solid with Ben Hill-Ling again in great form (would
hold their full forward goalless) and reliable Scott Wightman. Special mention to Alex Jarvis who went into the ruck to
match their 200cm giant state ruckman and outjumped him to keep him in check.
A WORD FROM THE HAFF
Senior Coach Chris Mehaffey
PHOS again came out hard and we seemed to go back into our shell a bit and failed to trust our instinct to back ourselves.
It also proved costly through the second and third terms that the chances we did have we often missed what we
should have taken and on three or four occasions the ball “just” fell short with long kicks where we could have looked
for the shorter better option at times. We did become stereotyped in forward movement.
To the players’ credit in the last term we got back to the style of form we want to play and outscored them and ended
the day five goals down but with the same number of scoring shots.
In summary the players could be satisfied with their effort as totally in all the stats we basically matched them at in
every facet and if we ha been able to convert who knows.
Certainly a very creditable performance again and certainly the form of the group continues to improve against quality
opposition. Special mention to young Jack Creevy in his first “A” Grade match who took some strong grabs and certainly
showed he has a huge future as he was not intimidated by the bigger bodies of faster speed of the game and has a
very bright future with the “Kings”
Well what can I say? Crawf's 200th. The day I had been looking forward to for years. Not only was I looking forward to
it because it was great to watch Crawf make his way onto the life membership board, but I knew he would bring in some
talent.
The average age of my team went from 19 to 41. I had over 1000 games experience in my opening on-ball brigade. I
had more ego's on the field than our club normally has in total. I had 500+ SANFL or VFL games experience and 26
AFL games experience. That's the 5068th most AFL games played.
I had 14 of "Crawf's Mates" in the side but 22 of Crawf's mates in the side. And we had an absolute ball.
From Michael Fotheringham's foghorn worthy voice, to Staritski's silky smooth skills that he hasn’t lost, to Michael
Chidley getting everyone asking "why on earth is he playing footy?" - we had fun.
Crawf was a ball magnet, clocking up six solid goals all from within 15 metres of the goals. Rasheed contributed three
for the day and then we had a range of players snag one sausage roll each.
We had a slow first quarter while everyone wore off the rust from their joints and skills and were level at the first break.
As we moved into the second quarter after a Fotheringham pump up, we snagged seven goals in the second term to
leave PHOS behind. From there, we basically had the game in the bag. We had a slow third quarter when we lost focus
of the game and had more fun mucking around, then in the fourth we turned it on again to try to get Crawf to his hallowed
7 goals. We fell one short, but not through lack of trying.
COACH CROWBANGA
But football aside, the most important thing about the game was what is displayed. It displayed kingmenship and mateship.
It shows what a great mate and great bloke Crawf is to get 10 blokes out of retirement to strap up just one last time
to play with him. It showed mateship between all of Crawf's mates. It showed Kingmenship from the younger players
who were more than happy to carry Crawf's Clan through the day and do all of the running work for them. And it
showed Kingmanship across generations and across schools, careers, life plans and up bringing - for as soon as you put
that guernsey on you know you all have one thing in common. Last Saturday, it was the best case of Kingmenship I
have seen in my time at the club. A bunch of men who hardly knew each other suddenly bonded and became one. They
worked together to achieve success for the team and then had a beer together after the game. It shows to me that a club
can bring people from all walks of life together, and what better time to do it than for Crawf's 200th?
Normally I would harp on for a few more paragraphs about the game and the success we had, but this week I don't think
I need to. I would only like to thank Crawf for everything he gives to the club and gives to his mates. Crawf is that mate
that everyone has who is always generous and willing to help you in any way possible. He truly is a life blood for this
club and he deserves more praise than he will accept. Crawf will retire now on 200 games exactly, but his football and
his contributions will be remembered for a lifetime. He will be deservedly immortalised as a life member.
Well done Crawf. You deserve it mate.
