Welcome to the Pembroke King’s weekly newsletter – The King’s Speech. Each week it will fill you in on
the previous weeks happenings around the club as well as what to expect in the coming weeks.
The Kings travelled to take on Portland last week. At quarter time we were even with the hosts and blasted
out in the second quarter to be 5 goals up half way through. A drop in concentration saw Portland sneak 3
goals before the major break giving us a lead of 2 goals. Portland kicked 13 straight goals in the second
half which ultimately ended the game. On a good note the B-grade found their form again and defeated
their opposition. Many of the teams young players really stood up using their the pace and ability to take
chances. If they continue to utilise these skills it is no doubt that they will be able defeat every team in the
second half of the year and will be good contenders for finals. Unfortunately to C-Grade were unable to get
up on Saturday although well done to Terry and the boys for coming back to outscore Portland the last
three quarters after being 6 goals down at quarter time.
On Saturday we ventured north to take on Portland. We had been focusing all week on improving our
disposal and creating options for our teammates by working hard into and out of space. It was a good
week on the track and we were getting some of our better players back from injuries. Despite playing a
side above us on the ladder I was confident that we would put on a good display for our supporters. The
B's got the Club off to a great start and played some fantastic running football for a well deserved win.
The A's started well. Despite kicking into a stiff breeze, we were outplaying Portland and moving the ball
well. In particular Jack Creevy finished off a couple of forward plays and looked dangerous. We managed
to break even in the first quarter and started the second quarter positively. Tom Evans was working hard
in attack, finding space and getting on the end of some good entries. Matt Falzon was working hard
leading up and Ben Wood and Brad Ingerson were providing some really physical contests. At the 15
minute mark of the second quarter we led by just under 5 goals and things were going well.
Unfortunately, that seems to be where the good bit ends. For the next 10 minutes we failed to pick up our
opposition and that resulted in Portland kicking the next 3 goals.
The momentum had shifted back into Portlands favour and we only had ourselves to blame. I was left
scratching my head as to why we would give up such an intiative so easily... did we think that Portland
were just going to rollover?
With their tails now well and truly up Portland came out hard in the 3rd quarter and unfortunately we failed
to match their endeavour and disappointingly their discipline (in manning up). By the time the siren
sounded to end the 3rd quarter the match was all but over. The only thing left to do was appeal to the
group to try their best and salvage some pride. Despite trying hard, non-more so than our captain Scott
Wightman, the game continued to be controlled by Portland and they ran out easy victors.
After 5 losses in a row, we must continue to be positive. We have a good group of players who are
training hard and trying to improve. We have shown in nearly all the games that we can match it with the
teams we have lost to. That said, now more than ever we need to stick together and be prepared to
sacrifice a little to get a lot
The loss of the toss saw the boys get jumped from the start and down 6 goals to one at
quarter time. From the first change onwards we showed we can match it with these top
sides and we outscored them for the next 3 quarters. We were in with a chance with the
wind in the last quarter but for probably the first time this year WE were the team to run out
of legs.
The three or 4 B graders who came back to make up our numbers were understandably
pretty well spent by the last 15 minutes and with some injuries on the bench we just could
not make up the difference. All in all I was pleased with the effort of such a young side
against much more experienced opposition.
Best player this week was James Blake, a young player straight from year 12 last year.
He has heaps of pace and good skills. With a few more pizzas and beer from the Kensi
should see him a lot bigger in the future and we can see a good A grader coming on.
Name-Nicholas Scott Bentley
Nicknames- Bents, B-Li, Busta B
DOB-19-10-1982
Occupation Student / Bottle shop Attendant
Marital Status- Single
As a veteran of the club what has been some of the biggest changes you have seen over the
years that you have been playing for the club?
All players wore black boots, there were no such thing as white boots. No players wore fancy
pants (skins) now just every player wears them. The club is a lot more professional now and the
average playing age is a lot younger. Back when I started Old Les Krautz used to sit on the
boundary line of each home game and yell out gems such as “C’mon Kingys” “Get on your
player” “Pick him up” over and over.
What is on Nick Bentley’s Saturday morning breakfast plate/bowl before a game?
Three square crumpets. One with Vegemite, one with Peanut Paste and the other with Cream
Cheese. I have a hot Mocha with it.
What is your usual meal at the Kensi?
Seafood Basket.
What was the last movie you saw and how many spuds?
Thor (in 3D) 3 spuds, 3D glasses gave me a headache though
What is the best TV show on at the moment?
I only really watch sport and news. I don’t mind footy classified when I can stay up for it.
If you could be anyone for a day who would it be? Hugh Heffner. (with a good supply of viagra)
What are your thoughts on the AFL subs rule? Don’t like it. There was no need to bring it in.
Who’s your tip to win the AFL Premiership this year?
I would like to see the Cats get up over Collingwood in the big one.
How many times do you think that you have watched the 97 and 98 AFL Grand finals?
Plenty. I found a version of the 98 GF recently that has had 5AA cometary dubbed over it. It’s classic, Cornsey loses his voice and KG is
so overcome with emotion he just cries all the way through the final quarter.
What is your favourite Footy Quiz question to ask somebody?
I like guernsey number related questions.
What went wrong for the Crows last weekend versus Collingwood?
The game is played over four quarters not three thirds.
Final Words
“C’mon Kings, pick him up!”-Les Krautz circa 2001
What was the last movie you saw and how many spuds?
The Kings Speech, 4.5 spuds! An inspirational tale.
What is the best TV show on at the moment?
Modern Family-classic Phil Dumpphy
If you could be anyone for a day who would it be?
What are your goals for season 2011?
To contribute as much as I can on a weekly basis to the side developing a winning culture.
I would like to further develop leadership qualities, encouraging all the lads to stay
involved in such an exciting club atmosphere.
What is on Tom Evans’ Saturday morning breakfast plate/bowl before a game?
6 Weet-bix with hot skim milk (heated up on the stove-NOT MICROWAVE), and a
sprinkle of sugar.
What is your usual meal at the Kensi?
Don’t mind a chicken Schnitzel but have been getting into the Chicken Caesar Salads a bit
lately.
Which song would be playing over your highlights reel?
Scribe-Not Many
What are your thoughts on the AFL subs rule?
It’s new and adds an exciting twist to a game of AFL football. It would be hard wearing the green jacket though, not knowing when you’ll
be required, a very mentally demanding position.
Who’s your tip to win the AFL Premiership this year?
Collingwood
What are you thoughts of the Football moving to Adelaide Oval in 2014?
I’m all for it. It’s a great stadium and footballers from all over the country will be looking forward to playing on the hallowed turf, a much
needed boost for AFL football in South Australia. The surrounding city businesses will get much more service and the city of Adelaide will
be a hype of activity.
Do you think that Price Harry has got a chance with Pippa?
Ladies love royalty, especially Kings!
Occupation: Uni Student
Marital Status: Single
What are your goals for season 2011?
To gain plenty of experience playing with new teammates
To learn as much as I can about playing Amateur footy
Working on my own game to contribute to the kings
What is on Ben Wood’s Saturday morning breakfast plate/bowl before a game?
Usually a few pieces of toast or maybe a bowl of weetbix
What is your usual meal at the Kensi?
Chicken parmy
Which song would be playing over your highlights reel?
Cold Hard Bitch - Jet
What was the last movie you saw and how many spuds? More Than A Game – 3.5/5
As a first year player this year how have you found the transition from school
footy to Amateur lever?
It’s definitely a big step up from school footy as far as intensity, speed and skill
level. There seems to be a lot more emphasis put on mateship and teamwork at
Amateur level, which has lifted to quality of footy been played on Saturdays.
What has been the most welcoming thing about the Kingys for you?
Saturday nights at the Kensi. It’s been a great place to go to get to know all the guys
at the club.
What is the best TV show on at the moment? Was hoping Angry Boys would be up there but it’s been pretty disappointing so far
If you could be anyone for a day who would it be? Bill Gates
What are your thoughts the AFL subs rule? I don’t mind it… hasn’t made the game much different really
Who’s your tip to win the AFL Premiership this year?
Collingwood most likely, but I’d be happier to see the cats win another flag
What are you thoughts of the Football moving to Adelaide Oval in 2014?
Very happy! Great central spot will hopefully boost attendance to games. Parking could be a big issue though...
Do you think that Price Harry is got a chance with Pippa?
Nah don’t think so.. He’d be punching well above his weight
Final Words
