Kings A’s and B’s come up against top-ofthe-table
Adelaide University
Meet the trainers...pg 9
Prez precis—Adam Aberle
The Pembroke Kings registered their first win for the season last week against Flinders
Park. The reserve and senior teams both won their first match in contrasting styles. The
reserves had a low scoring hard fought victory despite the odds of having only 17 fit
men on the park. Congratulations to Phil Holbrook and the team for a gutsy first victory
in 2010.
My well wishes go out to Blake Sanders who had a sickening collision and had to be taken to hospital. Thankfully X-
Rays and CT scans all appear to be clear and no serious or long lasting injuries were suffered. We look forward to
Blake making a speedy recovery.
The senior side played some outstanding football on the weekend and were totally dominant for much of the match
against Flinders Park. The Kings had 15 scoring shots during the third quarter and opened up a 9 goal lead early in the
last quarter. Unfortunately the lead could not be sustained and the Kings won with a much smaller margin, however,
much praise and confidence should be thrust upon the young playing group for a fine performance. It was a great entertaining
spectacle and the free flowing and running Kings game was certainly on show.
The C Grade suffered a loss in their first outing of the year against last years premiers. Flinders Park showed that they
will once again be the team to beat in div C2 this year. Crowie and the boys can certainly take away some positives
from the game though as there were some great signs in the first half that I got to watch. Many of the players were
making their debut for the club and will only get better for the run and the experience. All bodes well for another successful
year for the C Grade.
This week the Kings are at home at Haslam Oval for the Round 3 Intec Group clash against Adelaide University. The
Blacks are in good form early and sit top of the table after victories against Eastern Park and Rostrevor OC. The
matches against Adelaide Uni are always hotly contested and close games. Both clubs rise to the occasion and play the
level of intensity certainly goes up a gear as well. Please come along to Haslam Oval on Saturday afternoon and support
the teams and enjoy the carnival atmosphere on display for supporters.
My thanks to the Intec Group, Phil and Karen Ingerson and the Ingerson family for their sponsorship of this round. I
have got to know Phil very well over the past few years with our heavy involvement in the club and I am really thankful
to him for not only his continued support of the club but to me personally.
I’ve also had the opportunity to do business with Intec Group and have found their IT consulting services to be professional
and sleek. I can recommend them to you and your business with a great deal of confidence.
Quiz Night
The Kings Quiz night is back bigger and better than ever in 2010. I know that the social committee are dedicating a lot
of time in preparing the night into a blockbuster evening of enjoyment and entertainment. I know about 10 tables have
already been sold, so if you would like to come along on May 29 (in the Walkerville RSL)
please contact Scott Wightman on 0438 944 489 or s.wightman@russellmedia.com.au to
book your place.
Sponsorship
I would ask all supporters and members of the club to please support the Kings community.
There are many great local businesses that are owned and operated by sponsors and
if you are in the market for a specific product or service, don’t hesitate to source these
people out and support them.
My thanks to the following individuals and companies for their sponsorship in 2010:
Tim Seale / DE Seale & Sons / Discount City Carpets – Monarch Sponsorship
Tim Seale in association with DE Seale and Sons, Discount City Carpets, Pegulam Vinyl Flooring and Dunlop Flooring
and Underlay have kindly taken up the top tier of sponsorship again in 2010. Discount City Carpets have 13 stores
across the state and are the people to see for all of your residential and commercial vinyl floor coverings, floating timber
floors, quality Dunlop underlay and of course carpets. Go in and see Martin Williams and the team – with over 20
years experience these guys are the specialists in the industry.
Mark Wightman / Them Communications – Monarch Sponsorship
Them Communications are the guys to see as far as advertising, design and communications go. Mark and the team
would be more than happy to sit down and discuss your needs. Log on to www.them.com.au to learn more about there
award winning business.
John Gilgen / Metro Holden – Player Sponsorship
The Gilgen family are long time supporters and friends of the club and its community. If you are in the market for a
new or used quality car, make your first stop off point 1 Port rd. The team down there will be able to help you find the
right vehicle for you and help with all the necessary financing as well if required.
Alex and Chris Hackett / Chris Hackett Wines – Player Sponsorship
Alex and Chris continue to support the club in 2010. Regular spectators and loyal supporters, we thank them for their
sponsorship. If you get an opportunity I can recommend picking up a bottle of Chris’ wine – especially some of his
Coonawarra red.
Ian Catford – Player Sponsorship
My thanks to Ian and the Catford family for your ongoing involvement and sponsorship of the club. Debate is still rife
as to which son is the most talented footballer. No doubt that Alex is the gifted athlete but for mine Toms uncanny
skills and tricks are still the winner for me.
John Cunningham / JKC Kinsmen Properties – Player Sponsorship
John successfully took the Kings to division 2 as the previous senior coach. He and his
wife Kelly are now busy with their new business venture JKC Kinsmen Properties.
Specialising in properties in the Glenelg and Holdfast Shores area, give John and the
team a call for all of your realty needs.
Barry Fritsch / St Morris Upholstery – Player Sponsorship
Its always a pleasure to catch up with Barry and Jane at the football. They are great supporters and friends of the club
and they also have a wonderful family business. If its restoration or custom made furniture you are after – head into
their store on Magill Rd. Check them out online at http://www.stmorrisupholsterers.com.au
Robert Oatey – Vice Patron Sponsorship
Obviously the Oatey family have been synonymous with the POSFC and football in SA for generations. They continue
to follow and support the Kings and I thank Robert for his kind sponsorship.
Subs
A reminder to all players that subs are now due for the 2010 season. The committee has worked hard to ensure that
subs have not been increased for players and they remain at $175 this year. For all new players the club uniform can be
claimed upon payment of your subs. Payments can me made by direct debit to
Pembroke Old Scholars Football Club
A WORD FROM THE HAFF
Senior Coach Chris Mehaffey
ROUND 2
We ventured to Flinders Park to meet an in form side coming off an 8 goal away win against Athelstone. As what
seems normal we went in with “obligatory” 4 changes with Will Paley (overseas 7 weeks), Sam Franklin (shoulder 4-5
weeks), Fletcher Doherty gaining fitness in the “B” Grade and a very unlucky Nick Bentley. We brought back Fraser
Pinkney (who would be eased back slowly in to the fray off the bench after little football in the past year), and Ollie
Winter, Harry Thring and Scott Wightman for their 1 st games “A” Grade games for the season.
It was put to our “smaller players” that they needed to contribute to the scoreboard more this week as they had only
shared 25% of the scoring last week which was not a sufficient return. They must work harder to get to the right attacking
positions to convert more of our forward entries.
It was a great start kicking the 1 st 2.1 but then dropped off for some unexplainable reason to allow Flinders Park (FP)
to kick 4.3 without a response to go in 15 points down at the 1 st change. It was made clear to the group that the last 15
minutes of the qrtr was not up to standard.
And didn’t they react well!! FP kicked the first but then we kicked 8.6 (should have been 11 or 12 goals) in a completely
dominant performance led by the running brigade led by Alex Holbrook, Angus Berry and Sam Fritsch seeing
the “runners” contribute 7 goals in the qtr. Fraser came on to the ground and got first hand to the ball. Our defence was
rock solid led by Glenn Smith and young Jake Brennan off half back and Alex Catford doing a good run-with role on
one of their playmakers.
The 3 rd qtr again was much the same early with Ben Way sent forward to “rest” contributing 3 off his own boot to
open up a 49 point margin and seemingly in control. Then Fritta (Sam Fritsch) went down with a hamstring, we made
2 poor defensive errors and went in at 3 qtr time with a 39 point lead but one felt momentum has changed a little……
and it did!
Another defensive error; Scott Fischer then injured his hamstring and our running brigade was depleted on the big
ground and FP came storming back. We lost control in the midfield and players were unable to react to “tighten” the
game up. The opposition come back at us for the 2 nd week in a row which is something we really must work on
quickly.
We just could not get our hands on the ball first, an unfortunate player injury combined
with a communication error, cost us 2 goals quickly. Flinders Park got to within 10
points with 4 minutes to go we were on the edge but a couple of timely “tall marks” in
defence and an excellent running goal by Harry Thring helped us settle the game a little
and run out winners by 14 points. A good win but not as good as it should have been.
In closing I would like to compliment the “B” Grade on their win after being down to 18 fit players half way through
the 1 st qtr the battled superbly for a great win showing great character. We do not be having much luck at present with
structural injuries and unavailability's at present but this will turn as the character of the Club continues to grow and
players develop further.
Next week the undefeated Adelaide University provide a huge test for us at home. Last year we sat in the same position
won 1 lost 1 and then lost the next 5 games……something the players are aware of and will work diligently to reverse
the next 5 weeks from last year. This period is critical to our yearly aspirations.
C-Kings 2010
-With Mark Crowhurst
The mighty C-Kings game up against a quality Flinders Park. They are the reigning premiers and they showed us why.
They had the class, goal kickers and speed. Eventually, it was the speed that got away from us.
With a bundle of new players and a range of new King-Men in our ranks, the Glamour were anything but a shoe-in for
this week's match. We knew Flinders Park would be strong but it was just a matter of how strong. They came out of
the block firing, but so did we. With all 25 cylinders hitting on song, we managed to hold with them for a half. At half
time we were only a few goals down and the match was within reach. The last two quarters our fitness wavered and
we struggled to keep up.
There were some exceptions though: Our new captains showed their class, they ‘Duracell Bunnied’ all day. Well, actually,
Nick Smerdon Duracell'ed all day and Luke Evans Energiser maned. Subtle, but important differences. This
level of speed and fitness will be paramount to the C-Kings Captaincy and the side will relish in it. They had a strong
presence all over the ground when it mattered most. They have the commitment and dedication usually seen in higher
grades. Both players refused to give themselves any votes but they were solid performers all day. It would seem a
mute point to go into the technical football reasons why these players are so great.
Worrall-Thompson, forever a favourite, dominated up forward and showed why it is so fantastic that he cannot train
and therefore is not eligible for B-Grade selection. Harmer should also work every Saturday morning. The usual suspects
were holding the fort together along the spine, with Bedford keeping the current C-Glamour-Coleman-Medallist
(with over 100 goals last year) down to 4.
We had some surprise packages. Jackson Doherty, back from the depths, showed glimpses of his class and the coaching
panel got barred up about what he might do in the future. Another player welcomed back from holiday was Duck
(Stuart Thompson). Quack. Duck was away last year and gladly announced "last time I played I was 8kg lighter".
Anyway, like duck off of a waters back it took him milliseconds to sink back into the groove. We played Duck
(Quack) in a lot of positions around the ground and he used his ability to lead the ball to dominate play.
I was more surprised than Ashtray a week ago when Van Der Hoek started firing. New to the club, he took a few minutes
to sink into the groove of things. Then he started to shine - reading the play better than his opponent and getting
more of the ball. When you're playing back pocket, it helps when your opponent doesn't have the ball. I guess it also
helps when you lose by 15 goals, you see a bit of it. Best on ground, I'm excited by what Vander might do in the coming
weeks.
Normally it is about now that I have a bit of a stab at the opposition club, but I have to say
that besides losing by 15 goals, Flinders Park were pretty good. Noble, and there to play
football (which is rarer than most would believe in the C-Kings). I guess when you win
by 15-35 goals each week you no reason to get the biff on. Although, one player still
found a reason to open up Phil Mc's eye. Phil bounced back onto the field a short time
later with "Half Forward? Ok where's that? Like.. over there sort of thing".
Tool of the week:
Gavin Jones. While we appreciate the notion of having young girls in the crowd (or even a crowd at all), we find it hilarious
when certain members of said crowd have offered certain players certain rewards for a game well played. Unfortunately,
it is hard to play a good game on the bench so Jonesy continually requested his return to the front line. 5th
best, I'm sure he had a great Saturday night.
A tough one looms again next week!
MEET THE TRAINERS!
Stay tuned for a
more in-depth
meeting…
Left to Right: Ching, Kim, Andrei
My name is Andrei Niculescu, I am 19 years old and currently I am in my third year of studying physiotherapy at
UniSA. I applied to become a sports trainer at the Pembroke Old Scholars Football Club because it is a great opportunity
for me to gain some experience in the field and learn new things that I can then apply in the future as I wish to be
involved in physiotherapy in sports.
Hi everyone- I’m Kim. I finished at Pembroke in 2007 and I'm a third year physio at UniSA. I mainly wanted to be a
sports trainer to get some more experience in sports physio and I guess the reason I chose POSFC in particular was because
I'd be around some familiar faces. See you on Saturday!!
Hi! I am Ching. I am a second year physiotherapy student. I got to know this club and this sports trainer position
through the advertisement sent out by Joanne. I hope to gain experience and knowledge through this sports trainer job.
Thanks. =)
Natural forwards in right place at the right time
ROBERT WALLS
Natural forwards are hard to find. That's why oldies Barry Hall, 33, Daniel Bradshaw, 31, and Brendan
Fevola, 29, were keenly sought by other clubs. And maybe that's why Matthew Lloyd and Scott Lucas, both
32, should have been retained by Essendon.
A natural forward's greatest asset is his ability to read the play. He anticipates where the ball will go. He puts his body to the advantage side of
his opponent, and he times his leads into available space. The natural forward will draw his opponent to the ball and then double back into the
created space behind. The natural forward will be aware of who and what is around him and use it to advantage.
Dumb forwards lead too early and to the wrong spots. They don't understand what the strengths and weaknesses are of the teammates ahead of
them. They don't continually prowl their forward line looking to wrongfoot their opponent and they can't read the play two and three steps
ahead as it unfolds.
Last Sunday I saw a natural forward play for the first time and I was impressed. It was 28-year-old James Podsiadly playing in just his second
game for Geelong. He kicked five goals, took 11 marks, got to lots of contests, caused plenty of spills and would have gone home with his
head spinning. Why? Because he is smart. And he would have been thinking - I've just played two senior games for the Cats, kicked seven
goals, and I'm just starting to understand the skills and talents of Ablett, Bartel, Johnson, Chapman and co. Imagine how much better equipped
he will be when he's played half a season with them.
For the remainder of the season the spotlight will shine on another older forward. And that is the Saints' Justin Koschitzke. This is Kosi's 10th
year in the system and yet he still hasn't arrived, hasn't delivered consistently good football.
And should one of the best full-forwards of all time still be playing? Lloyd is 14 months younger than Barry Hall, but has swapped the boots
for the suits. I always thought Lloyd was strictly a one-position player, a full-forward, but an extremely good one. Bomber coach Matthew
Knights played him further upfield last year, but it didn't work.
Knights' thinking was that with such a young team Lloyd would not be playing when the Bombers next threatened for a premiership, so it was
important to give younger players an opportunity to play there - namely Jay Neagle.
I admire Knights' determination to do it his way against popular opinion, but does he jeopardise his young coaching career in doing so?
Last year Lloyd averaged two goals a game, being played away from his favoured full-forward position. If kept in the goal square this season
and next, I'm confident he would have kicked over 50 goals a season. After four rounds the best return for a tall Essendon forward is Scott
Gumbleton, who has kicked just three goals.
Hall, new to the Bulldogs, was sensational in the pre-season NAB Cup kicking
17 goals in three games. Four games into the season proper, he has a return of
14 goals. But Barry no longer wanders the forward line far and wide. He is kept
by coach Rodney Eade near the goals. Just like Paul Roos is using Daniel Bradshaw
and Michael Voss is using ''Fev''. I guess the message is ''when you are on
a good thing stick close to the goal square''.
He doesn’t sleep...he waits.
He was cold, so he turned the sun up. As a result we have “global
warming”.
He can taste lies and you better believe he can divide by zero.
He is…
The Facebook stalker
There seems to be an obvious theme with Stuart Pike - he gets the girls.
There are a few questions marks though:
Why is he presenting to a Saints lad? (1)
He appears awfully keen on our C-Grade Vice Captain? (2)
Why is he restricting them from leaving his grasp? (3)
Why is he dressing like one so convincingly? (4)
Although he does get a good look…(5) (6)
