Match Report
The colossus, which is the B Grade Kinggies, once again experienced the ‘revolving door’ of
selection as another 8 changes were made to the side that was magnificent the week before
in knocking off Salisbury in heavy, hard conditions up at Salisbury Oval.
This week brought a fresh challenge, as the team looks to prove itself to the rest of the
competition by snaring a big scalp; Athelstone sitting on 2nd spot was the perfect prey. The
Kinggies just sitting inside the five, looking to cement their spot and remove the bitterness of
the close defeat to the Raggies earlier in the year meant that the boys were up and about for
the fight.
Furthermore, 3rd spot was on the line and there was the risk of slipping to 8th if other results
went against us.
Once again, heavy, hard conditions confronted the teams at Haslam and it was going to be
tough all day for the younger, lighter bodies of the Kinggies to knock off the more mature,
bigger Raggies. Our fearless leader Ollie Winter did the right thing and won the toss and we
had first use of the wind.
After a slow start where neither team got on top of one another, the Kings were able to
spread the Rags around and put some sausage rolls on the board; locking the ball deep in
their forward 50. However some gettable shots were missed and there was opportunities to
close the door on the Raggies before quarter time.
In the second term the Rags got off the chain in the middle of the ground and used the
substantial wind advantage more effectively and quickly eroded the quarter time lead,
eventually the Greenmen in the middle were able to make it a scrap and hold in the Raggies
and slowly take back the pill.
The third quarter was some of the best footy played by the Kings this year, considering the
conditions, the opposition and where the game was at. Oscar Ogai continued his great form
with some daring efforts from the stoppages trying to find the Baggity down the ground,
‘Bigger’ Nesh was superb in his ability to find space and the back 6 held up well as the Kings
took control of the game and got out to a 21 point lead at the final change.
Unfortunately the Rags doubled their scored in the final term and ran out winners by 17
points, despite the best efforts of the lads. The final quarter showed the gap between getting
a double chance and scrapping into the finals…or missing completely.
The Kinggies were overrun by the more mature Rags side and our lack of experience and
football nous (relative to Athelstone) caused the Greenmen to make incorrect decisions
which cost us goals.
Despite the massive disappointment in coughing up a big lead, there was plenty of positives
to take away. Oscar Ogai and Walshy continued their great form in the engine room, Chooky
Wightman was brave and hard coming off a back flank and our young back 6 that includes
Wark, Reeve, Lane and Arbon were solid and continue to learn the game.
A long trip up to Dwight Reserve is the perfect cup of tea to put the team back on track in its
quest for September glory.
Match Report
The mighty C Kings had a point to prove on the weekend against a 1st placed Athelstone.
We had played Athelstone earlier in the year and we where beaten by a couple of goals after
being in front at half time.
The Kings had a full team of 25 however we where short in stature with only 3 blokes over 6
foot. We had assembled the mosquito fleet… a team of midgets. It was going to be tough as
Athelstone had a number of big bodies and older heads on there team.
We had a number of big ins one of which was Michael Neddy Harmer for his first game of the
year adding to his 250+ games.
Right from the get go the Kings where on the back foot. The lads put in as much as they
could but where just being pushed of the ball by the bigger bodies and out smarted by the
opposition’s older players. At the half time siren the Kings found themselves down by a
handful of goals.
At the main break I stressed to the lads that whatever the outcome I just wanted to see effort.
We where down but where not going to go down without a fight.
The rain began to tumble down in the second half and we knew that we needed to grab a
couple of goals to keep the dream of a win alive. We managed one goal in the third term
and at the final change where down by 10 goals. Given the conditions it would have needed
and extraordinary effort to real in that deficit. As a group we made it our goal to win the final
quarter to finish the game on a high.
We managed to have majority of the ball in the final term and we kept pressing and pressing
however where unable to capitalise kicking 2 goals 3. We did manage to win the quarter
keeping Athelstone scoreless which was a win for us. The final scores read 4.8.32 Pembroke to
12.8.80 Athelstone.
We had 1 young lad Lucas Allan from the First 18 playing his second game for the Kings. For
a young lad it would have been intimidating against the bigger bodies but he did a great
job and managed 1 major. With our team of midgets Roberto Schibiki kicked 2 snag rolls
and had to play the whole game in the ruck. He had a stellar performance and managed the
BOG award. Other stand outs included Alistair Waples, Charlie Hall, Luke Evans and Brent
Knable. Simon Thwaits also found him self in the best and managed to break his thumb in
the process. Simon now sits on approximately 197 games and it looks like he will have to wait
another year to get his life membership
The lads didn’t come away with the win but everyone put in a solid effort against the top side.
We now look forward to taking on Hope Valley at home this weekend.
Cheers
ROUND 14 RAMBLE
Well well well I apologise for last 2 week guys. I was just so busy getting ready for the quiz night I didn’t have enough to time to
produce a stellar rambler 2 weeks ago and then Chookywookydoodaa decided last week that the newsletter was not be issued. I know
that Jake Van Der Hoek was not impressed by Chooky. After Jack posted that the newsletter would not be produced Jake said ‘But...
What of the rambler?’. I am sorry Jake… I am sorry. The one upside is I have 3 weeks of activities to choose from.
Ok lets get underway with our LODW nominations from the last 3 weeks.
Nomination 1: 2012 leavers – This is the second nomination these lads have has this year. A group of these fellas decided a mid
season trip to Melbourne was in order and a significant amount of lordish behaviour was had. The fellas concocted there own lordjuice
however they didn’t manage to make it to Kittens. For a bit of goss ask Tom Denyer about his dog walking experience….
Nomination 2: Ben Teague: Former Kings player Ben Teague proposed to his better half on an overseas trip. She said yes. Well done
Ben you are a LORD.
Nomination 3: Quiz Night: From all those who attended the quiz night was a cracker evening. Probably the highlight of the night
was drinking Lambos slushy’s from a Volcano cup. Absolutely delicious. I cant wait till Sam Franklin and Alex Catford use
there $250 slush happy voucher which was purchased on the night
The
Ramber
Nomination 4: Mark Wightman: If you are friends with the left tower on Facebook you will not have to
watch one minute of the Ashes Tour. This bloke updates his status every wicket, every run and every
time they show Darren Lehmann eating a chicken a cucumber sandwich. An example includes
Root getting out “go get F&%$#D, is he old enough to have one?” Such an old Lord.
Nomination 5: Adam Sandler talking about seeing Shaqs frank and beans. http://
teamcoco.com/video/conan-highlight-adam-sandler-shaq-junk
Nomination 6: Thomas Tbag Jenkinson: Ok so just to get things correct the guy is actually
26 not 40. Tom has started his first fulltime job this week as a primary school teacher. The
kids are going to think there great grandpa is teaching the class. Such a lord.
Ok so the nominations are in and in my humble opinion I think the LOTWeeks should go
to Ben Teague. This guy is a massive lord and we all congratulate him and his better half
Eliza on the engagement.
Get around me
