Welcome to North Somerset
Arts Week 2015
Dear Visitors.
A warm welcome to North Somerset Arts Week 2015. This 7th biennial arts festival
includes over 80 venues, numerous community events and artist-led projects all within
the North Somerset region - with more than 320 artists participating.
NSA strive to make art accessible in rural communities and the year of planning for this
event has required a tremendous amount of effort by all those participating, the NSA team
of committee members, artist members and volunteers together with support from our
funders, sponsors and partners. Due to their commitment and dedication, this 10 day
event offers you a fantastic opportunity to explore the abundance of creative talent in our
region to find hidden gems to covet. Experience a fusion of work that brings together
contemporary and traditional art, performance pieces and applied arts and crafts for
everyone to enjoy.
We are very grateful to those who have supported the event including NSA volunteers, our
advertisers and special thanks must go to our sponsors Weston College, North Somerset
Council and Sustainable Kitchens who have helped make Arts Week 2015 possible.
In this year’s programme The Theatre Orchard and Living Spit are opening the doors
to ‘Theatre Shop’, an amazing and varied performance programme in an empty retail unit
in Clevedon’s Queens Square (24 April - 21 May). Other collaborative projects during the
festival include our work with schools and communities, the Weston Schools project
- an exhibition held at the newly opened St Anne’s Church of England VA Primary School
in Hewish, Weston-super-Mare. This project will provide young creatives in local schools an
opportunity to exhibit their work as ‘professional’ artists alongside their peers.
Our intent for Arts Week 2015 is to celebrate creativity, and advocate
the cultural value and positive impact it has on the communities in
our region. We invite you to explore North Somerset, visit places and
artists you’ve never seen before, connect and have conversations,
participate in creative activities and be inspired.
All about us...
Fiona Davies
Development Officer
It’s been a busy time for North
Somerset Arts since our last
Arts Week in 2013. We’ve
been out and about in our
communities celebrating and
promoting the arts across
North Somerset, developing
meaningful relationships with
like-minded souls and doing
our best to make a name for
ourselves and the visual and
performance artists that live
and work here.
2014 saw a continuation of our
Intergenerational project work, and NSA
ran two Intergenerational/Multicultural
Projects with pupils and family members at
Walliscote and Windwhistle primary schools
in Weston-super-Mare, which were funded
by The Lark Trust. The first called “ROOTS
= Song + Story + Food” involved over
500 people in arts activities and tasting food
from around the world.
North Somerset Arts –
what have we been up to?
The project was led by storyteller Michael Loader, with musician
Piers Partridge. The Multicultural Friendship Association from
Weston-super-Mare and assisted by The Theatre Orchard
and b-creative.
As a continuation of project work undertaken
in 2013 NSA we were also invited to run another
Intergenerational Project as part of Alliance
Homes’ ‘Festival of Ages’ at the Weston Playhouse
in July. 500 people young and old offered a day
of creativity through drama, storytelling, a ‘This is
Your Life’ Time Capsule, song, drumming, dance
and knitting!
As well as Intergenerational project work, NSA volunteers have been out and
about in the community, giving support, advice and promoting artists in North
Somerset. We attended North Somerset Council’s ‘Made In’ festival, Clevedon
Tides Festival with the Art on The Rails event, and promoted a photography
exhibition held in aid of the Samaritans.
Encouraging the participation and enjoyment
of creative and performing arts in North Somerset.
The summer saw NSA volunteers getting creative as they ran a family
friendly hands-on junk workshop at Backwell Festival. The extremely
popular workshop gave the opportunity for children and adults to have
a go at junk modelling and the Backwell Junk Zoo was created!
NSA want to engage our communities with the
arts, offering new experiences and promoting
the arts for recreation and social change.
It also wants to bring our communities
together to develop opportunities for visual and
performance artists living and working here.
In 2014 as part of the NSA Business Plan,
we undertook an audience development
survey to better understand the artists working
in our community, to see what their needs and
aspirations were.
‘Arts Meet’ Events - A fantastic opportunity to network
with like minded creatives...
A series of ‘Arts Meet’ events were held and were very well attended. The opportunities provided an
evening where artists from all walks of life could meet up, chat and talk about their ideas. Professional
artists were invited along to give advice and a listening ear to any artists who wanted to discuss the
direction of their work. With many artists in our rural communities feeling isolated by the very nature
of their work, these ‘Arts Meet’ events left many feeling reinvigorated and inspired by the new
friendships they had begun.
Towards the end of 2014 this dialogue between artists and NSA led to the idea
and creation of a ‘Pop Up Shop’ which was opened in Clevedon in the run-up
to Christmas. The event which received help from the High Street Innovation
Fund was a huge success and crowds flocked to see the exciting exhibition of
works on display. Artists were thrilled as the sales mounted up and passers-by
commented on how much of a buzz the ‘Pop Up Shop’ had created.
The end of a great year was recognised
with the organisation being awarded
charitable status by the Charities
Commission. This enables us as a
‘not for profit’ organisation to re-invest
any received funds into the further
development and support of the arts
in North Somerset.
2015 kicked off with various ideas and
project proposals, for which funding is
now being sought. The first confirmed
project is part funded by the Quartet
Foundation to research and further
develop Intergenerational arts project
work. Weston Town Council have
supported Weston Schools Arts Week
exhibition at St Anne’s School. Talks are
well under way for an ‘Arts in Schools’
project part funded by Nailsea Town
Council with pupils of Nailsea School,
which is planned for later this summer.
Other arts projects are being considered
to widen participation as part of NSA
audience development strategy.
The dedication and belief of our team
of volunteers in the importance of the
arts and their desire to bring them to our
communities, results in them working
tirelessly and often without thanks in
making what often seems an impossible
task achievable.
To learn more about the NSA and to meet
some of the committee in person, why not
Botanical Painting Society & St Michael’s Art
Mixed Media, Painting/Drawing
North Somerset Botanical Painting Society members are exhibiting original
botanical and floral paintings. From St Michael’s, Peter describes his work as
“holiday snaps”, a reliving, distillation and concentration of memories of people,
places and events in a predominantly naturalistic style. Richard uses techniques
derived from miniaturists and iconographers to explore the natural world and
our religious heritage but is easily side-tracked, especially by steam trains.
Clevedon Pier Needs You!
Clevedon Pier, which is a registered charity, has through the generosity of a range
of national and local businesses and organisations raised nearly £1.9M towards
the £2.25M total cost of the New Visitor Facilities, work on which commenced
in September 2014. We are now just £350K short of the total funding needed to
complete the project and we need your help to achieve this.
The long term aim is to secure the future of
Clevedon Pier by providing sufficient income to
sustain our iconic Grade 1 listed pier in years to
come. Every ten to fifteen years the Pier undergoes
planned long term maintenance and repainting
which costs around £1M, which means we need
to build up a surplus of about £100K a year to
continue the maintenance programme.
Currently the Pier does generate surplus income
every year but not enough to fully cover the long
term maintenance and repairing costs, without
sufficient funding the Pier’s future cannot be
guaranteed. The new Visitor Centre will help to
generate a more sustainable level of income, and
with the help of a new members scheme we will be
able to preserve the Pier for future generations.
Support from the local community remains vital to
complete this excitıng project and we are planning
to launch a Community Shares scheme which will
offer members of the public and local businesses
the opportunity to buy and own a share in the
organisation which runs the pier. If you take up
the offer and buy shares, you will enjoy a range of
member benefits that will be announced when the
scheme is officially launched.
If you would like to be part of the next chapter of
the Pier’s History then please contact us to register
your interest (no obligation) by either emailing
to: communityshares@clevedonpier.com or by
posting your full postal details to;
