THIS IS UNION!
In 1879 a group of progressive
citizens followed the prompting
of Abraham H. Harritt, a salesman
of school desks, and James T.
Gibson, the owner of a generalmerchandise
store, to establish
a college in the Barbourville
community. W.W. Sawyers and
James D. Black met in the offi ce
of Judge J.H. Tinsley and formed
a stock company to launch Union
College.
Black, who later served as
president of Union from 1910-12
and later served as governor
of Kentucky, is given credit for
having named the school “Union.”
CENTENNIAL HALL
The institution it would serve
as a unifying infl uence for the
community regardless of church affi liation or political differences. The Articles of Incorporation
were drawn up on Oct. 18, 1879, and provided for the issuance of $20,000 worth of capital
stock. The London Echo of Dec. 12, 1879, carrying its fi rst announcement of Union, listed the
corporation as being “designed to fi ll a long-felt want in eastern Kentucky, eastern Tennessee and
western Virginia.”
Union was operated under local leadership for the fi rst few years, but began to experience
severe fi nancial struggles. On Oct. 25, 1886, the property was “cried off” to Green Elliott, who
purchased it for Dr. Daniel Stevenson for the sum of $4,425 with Mrs. Mahala Dowis furnishing the
funds. The renowned Kentucky educator had been authorized to attend the sale by the Board of
Education of the Kentucky Annual Conference of The United Methodist Church.
Union’s athletic mascot, the English Bulldog, was introduced during the fall of 1925. The breed,
whose ancestors were developed in Britain before the 13th century from the British mastiff and
other breeds, was used for bullbaiting and dogfi ghting until these sports were outlawed in the
19th century.
In 1967, the Alpha Phi Omega service fraternity of Union College purchased the fi rst living
mascot named Mack. He was presented at the Homecoming basketball game that same year. A
registered English Bulldog, Mack died in 1971. His remains are buried in an area adjacent to Union’s
current baseball complex.
During the past seven years, Union College began a major campus renovation and building
project. Plans included the creation of new student housing, expanded academic and athletic
centers, and the upgrade of existing facilities. Projects completed were the construction of the
Stewart-Lyttle Apartments, Sharp Academic Center, Black Technology Center and the renovation
of Speed Hall. Union’s athletic facilities have also received facelifts as well. A new brick backstop
erected in 2001 at Sanders Field at Jerry W. Carey Baseball Stadium, while a new wooden outfi eld
fence was built in 2002. Robsion Arena recently had the fl oor repainted, new scoreboards
installed and a new lights, roof and gutters installed. Two new tennis courts were constructed,
while the existing four were resurfaced, and a new press box was constructed at Burch/Nau Field
(football) in 2003.
Union offers 26 majors in the undergraduate curriculum, which lead to a bachelor’s degree.
Minors are also available in many of these programs. In addition, the college offers pre-professional
programs that are affi liated with other institutions and agencies.
Union College also boasts a graduate program The college offers graduate work in education
leading to a Master’s degree, Fifth-Year Certifi cate and Rank I Certifi cate.
How many independent, liberal arts colleges in the Commonwealth of Kentucky can boast of
a Nobel Prize-winning graduate? Union College can certainly lay claim to that. Dr. Phillip A. Sharp,
the co-winner of the 1993 Nobel Prize for medicine, received his bachelor’s degree from Union
in 1966.
Campus life starts from the moment the students arrive on campus and continues through the
end of the school year. Students can participate in more than 30 campus organizations such as
music, theatre productions, sports, student government, religious activities and clubs.
BURCH / NAU FIELD AT UNION STADIUM
Burch/Nau Field at Union Stadium has been the home of Union College
football since the program was reinstated as a school-sponsored sport in
1984.
The facility has remained relatively the same over the years, but that
all changed during the summer of 2007 when synthetic sports grass was
installed.
Plagued by rainy football seasons the past few years, Burch/Nau Field’s
natural grasss surface had continually taken a beaten, and the cost of repairing
the turf yearly began to mount. But with the Union College Board
of Trustees’ approval, Union took on the nearly $1 million project.
Installed by Vescio’s Sportsfi elds, the new turf will not only host all of
the Bulldog home football games but also a number of Bulldog and Lady
Bulldog home soccer matches. The “UC” logo with the bulldog head will
be painted at the center of the fi eld. The end zones will be orange with
Union painted white and outlined in black. The football yard lines will be
inlaid white, while the markings for soccer will be highligted in black.
The fi eld is named in honor of two of Union’s alums and football heroes - Mr. Ossie Burch and Mr. Bill Nau. Although the two never played on the
gridiron together, Burch and Nau teamed up with many others to help revive the Bulldog football program in the early 1980s. Not only were they
instrumental in breathing life into the once dormant Union College football program, but Burch and Nau were gridiron greats in their own right.
Burch, a 1937 graduate, played on the 1932-35 Bulldog teams, guiding Union to a 14-4-7 record during that time. In 1934, Burch helped Union to a
5-0-2 mark, giving Union its only undefeated season. Union outscored its opponents 79-21 that year with the fi nal four games resulting in shutouts of
the Bulldog defense.
Nau was a 1941 graduate and was a four-year member of the Bulldog football team. From 1937-40, Nau helped Union to a 15-11-2 record. His
greatest season of success came during senior year as the Bulldogs went 5-1-1 in 1940.
Both Burch and Nau were inducted into the Union College Athletic Hall of Fame in 1990.
The football program was suspended following the 1941 season as the United States entered into World War II, and it wasn’t until the early
1980s that the sport was revived. Support began to grow for revitalizing the football program, and in 1984, the Bulldogs took the fi eld for the fi rst
time in 43 years.
The fi eld was named in Mr. Burch and Mr. Nau’s honor during the 1991 Homecoming ceremonies.
Burch/Nau Field at Union Stadium is nestled in the heart of the Union College campus and is
surrounded by the beautiful mountains of southeastern Kentucky. In the south end zone sits the
Bulldogs large scoreboard. The grandstand areas on the home and visiting sides can hold 2,500
fans; however, with all the open spaces around the fi eld, it would be possible for nearly 5,000
people to be in attendance to cheer on the Bulldogs.
Atop the home-side grandstand rests a recently constructed press box, completed prior to
the 2003 season. The press box is two-story, housing the coaching boxes and videotaping room
upstairs and the press and game-day staff on the lower level.
THE UNION COLLEGE WEIGHT ROOM FACILITY
Union College boasts of having a state-of-the-art weight room that helps
insure all of the school’s student-athletes remain on top of their game in season
and out of season.
Located in its own building beside Robsion Arena, the weight room facility
has been totally remodeled during the summer of 2003, and new equipment
was purchased. The entire interior was repainted, new fl oor mats were
installed and the offi ce area was renovated.
The equipment housed here includes: seven half-rack multi-purpose stations,
three lat pull-down machines, two leg curl/extension machines, a preacher
curl station, a glute-hamstring machine, an exercise bicycle and a stairmaster
cardiovascular machine. Also, the facility is fully equipped with dumbbells
ranging from fi ve pounds to 100 pounds.
The facility has two offi ces, which are used by the football staff.
2007 BULLDOG PREVIEW
e Union Bulldogs e
4
After a season of “what ifs,” the
Union College football team is ready to
leave last season in the past and enter
the 2007 campaign with something to
prove.
Going 3-7 overall and 1-4 in Mid-
South Conference East play, 2006 was
a season of heartache and heartbreak
for the Bulldogs. Hampered by injuries
and costly turnovers, Union saw many a
win slip through its grasp as it lost four
games by six points or less.
“Last year, with all the turnovers and
injuries, we struggled,” said Union head
coach Tommy Reid.
Yet, out of that heartache, Union
returns a vast number of starters, whom
when healthy, can compete with the
best of the Mid-South Conference has
to offer.
“I feel read good about the upcoming
season, especially about the returning
players we’ve got coming back,” Reid
said. “I’m especially excited about
the offense due to the maturity and
experience we return on that side of
the ball. We don’t have as many question
marks as we’ve had here in the past.”
The Bulldogs return 10 starters on
offense while returning eight on defense.
Even though Union returns a high number
of starters, Reid admitted that the
2007 Bulldogs could be overlooked by
opponents.
“We’re almost always going to be
overlooked,” the Bulldog coach said.
“The perception of Union is that we’re
a team that’ll hang around but isn’t really
a threat.
“However,” Reid added, “this year, we
want to prove people wrong.”
Terence Pollock could collect his 1,000th
career rushing yard during his sophomore
season.
But the road won’t
be an easy one for
Union with an always
stout MSC East slate
as well as four games
against MSC West
squads.
“It’ll be another
tough year (in the
conference),” Reid
said,” and I believe
that’s what makes our
conference so great.
Because year-in and
year-out, from one
week to the next, you
know you’re lining up
against another good
team.”
Union had a solid
year offensively in
2006 but struggled
put points on the
board as well as
hanging on to the
ball. The Bulldogs amassed 2,689 yards
in total offense with a balanced attack
as 1,503 yards came through the air and
1,186 on the ground. However, Union
scored just 164 points for a 16.4 pointsper-game
average.
Additionally, Union turned the ball
over a total of 23 times, while its
opponents coughed it up just 15 times
and averaged 23.2 points per contest.
Yet, there is still a hint of optimism
heading into the 2007 campaign.
The Bulldog offense returns a high
number of players who spent some time
in the starting lineup. Union lost just three
players who started numerous games,
yet 10 that started a minimum of two
games are back.
The two positions affected by the
losses are at wide receiver and on the
offensive line. Despite the loss of one
wideout, the Bulldogs return fi ve of
its top six receiving leaders from last
season, including the top three. On the
line, Union lost two starting offensive
linemen, yet Reid is confi dent that
there are seven to eight returnees
who will battle for playing time, not
to mention a couple of newcomers
that could add to the mix.
Over the years, Union has had a
number of quality players at the skills
positions. But what has been generally
lacking has been the offensive line.
“We’ve had some good running
Senior quarterback Joey Waters will be gunning for the record books during the 2007 season.
Already the holder of the career touchdown passing record, Waters is on pace to own every major
career passing record.
backs over the years,” Reid said. “But
in years past, it’s not been our running
backs, but the lack of production out
of the offensive line.
“We’ve always had good skill guys;
we’ve just struggled upfront,” he added.
“Now, we’ve got seven, eight guys
upfront that can play whereas we’ve
had just one or two.”
Leading the way on the offensive
line will be a trio of seniors, including
All-Mid-South Conference East Second
Team member Patrick Kallendorf.
Joining him are fellow seniors Nick
Ruggieri and Chris Murphy.
Sophomores Brock Evans and J.D.
Conley are also back. Though just secondyear
players, both saw considerable
amount of time on the fi eld as freshmen.
And if he can stay healthy, look for 6-4,
297-pound Brandon Lack to give the
offensive line a boost. Additionally, the
line could get a shot in the arm from
transfer Quintin Borders.
The 2006 season was supposed to
be senior quarterback Joey Waters’
coronation as he was to put an all-out
assault on the record book. However,
Waters lasted just two games as he
suffered a season-ending knee injury.
Fortunately, because played in just two
games, he was able to use a medical redshirt
and have a second go-around at his
senior season.
“As a junior (in 2005), he had a great
year,” said Reid. “At this point in his
career, he’s got a great understanding
of what to do and how to manage our
offense.”
Last season, Waters completed 27-
of-50 passes for 382 yards and three
touchdowns in two games. He became
just the third player in program history
to pass for over 2,000 yards in a season
when he threw for 2,059 yards on
184-of-297 passing in 2005. He also
set the single-season record for most
touchdown passes in 2005 with 21 and
is the career leader with 39.
And with 4,664 career passing yards,
Waters is just under 1,900 yards away
from passing Lee Worley for the career
passing yardage record.
Kyle Callahan filled in admirably
last season at quarterback, throwing
for 1,039 yards and six touchdowns.
But with Waters back under center, the
versatile Callahan will look to haul in
passes instead of lobbing them. In the
two games he wasn’t at quarterback,
Callahan caught 10 passes for 163 yards
and two touchdowns, ranking him sixth
on the team in receptions and second in
touchdown catches.
Joining Callahan at wide receiver are
Ryan Chambers, Chris Collopy and
Shawn Kelly, who all tied for the team
lead in receptions with 17. Chambers had
296 receiving yards and one score, while
Collopy had 289 receiving yards and a
team-best four touchdowns receptions.
Kelly’s 17 catches, meanwhile, covered
185 yards. Also back is Stephen Hunter,
who had 11 receptions for 214 yards
and a touchdown during his freshman
campaign.
Union could also get a boost from
red-shirt freshman P.J. Burrowes, a 6-2,
170-pounder from Middlesboro, Ky.
In the backfi eld, the Bulldogs return a
solid corps of running backs, including the
team’s top rusher in Terence Pollock.
Pollock put together one of the best
freshman seasons ever as he rushed for
655 yards and eight touchdowns on 155
carries for a 4.2 yards-per-carry average.
His 655 yards last season ranks 11 th -best
in program history, just missing cracking
the Top 10 by one yard.
Ben Kelly is also back after averaging
3.4 yards per carry in 2006. Union will
also get some help in the backfi eld from
Lee Miles and Antonio Drane, both
of whom red-shirted last season. Senior
David Hammer could also see time at
fullback as well as at tight end.
On the other side of the ball, the
Bulldog defense was solid in 2006 as
it ranked in the top 40 in the nation in
several categories, including 21 st in sacks
by with an average of 2.3 per game. In
addition, Union allowed just 232 points,
the 10 th fewest in program history since
the program was revived in 1984.
However, while it returns eight
defensive starters, the Bulldog defense
lost three big cogs from last year’s
squad. Gone are Brandon Webb, who
led the NAIA in tackles for a loss with
Senior linebacker Patrick O’Neal recorded 102 total tackles in 2006, earning him All-Mid-South Conference East First
Team honors. He was the fi rst Bulldogs to amass 100-plus tackles since Herman Lovett accomplished the feat in 2002.
2.4 per game to go along with his 9.0
sacks, Junior Owen, who had 55 tackles
and 3.0 sacks to his credit, and Caleb
Jones, who helped out with 35 tackles
and 5.0 sacks. Between the three, they
accounted for 42.5 tackles for a loss.
“Last year, we were more experienced
on defense,” Reid said. “This year, we’re
not. Each year you take a hit somewhere,
and this year, it’s on defense for us.
“We’re going to be young (on
defense),” the Union coach added, “but
we’re going to be deep.”
Leading the way will be senior
Patrick O’Neal, who has done nothing
but lead the team in tackles the past
three seasons. In 2006, the middle
linebacker became the fi rst Bulldog to
record 100-plus tackles in a season since
Herman Lovett accomplished the feat
in 2002. He had 102 total tackles with
2.0 sacks in earning All-MSC East First
Team honors.
Junior Kyle Sasser could land a starting
linebacking spot after posting 40 tackles,
4.0 of which went for a loss, last season.
Others who could see playing time at
linebacker include Depaul Payton, Josh
Presley and Daniel Moody.
The defensive line is full of question
marks as well, but there are a handful
of experienced players back. Fifthyear
senior Colby Wilson recorded
16 tackles with two going for a loss in
limited action last year. Arthur Johnson
will anchor the nose guard slot, while
Patrick Burke, Timmy Goodin and Ryan
Baker will vie for the other defensive
end position.
The secondary will be young in age
but very experienced. Sophomore Ty
Harris had an extraordinary freshman
campaign in which he had 38 tackles and
four interceptions – three coming in one
game to tie the school record, landing
him All-MSC East First Team honors.
Harris will anchor one corner, while
Jeremy Agbomi, Antonio Dishman
and Garry Barnett battle it out for the
other starting spot.
Sophomore Josh Littleton is penciled
in as the team’s free safety. In 2006, he
came on strong as the season progressed,
recording 29 tackles, 3.0 tackles for a
loss, 1.0 sacks and fi ve pass breakups.
Marekus Smith, who had 57 tackles, 3.5
tackles for a loss and four pass breakups
as a sophomore, will help out again as a
safety. In addition, junior Derrick Hurst
will help out at one of the two safety
positions.
Special teams is up for grabs as well.
Reid will be looking to a newcomes to
take care of the kicking duties. James
Hager is a freshman out of Micanopy,
Fla., and will be asked to handle all the
kicking duties for the Bulldogs.
In years past, Union had held its own
in the return game, generally ranking
among the nation’s best. But in 2006,
the Bulldogs averaged just 15.2 yards
per kick return and 7.4 yards per punt
return. Wide receivers Hunter, Burrowes
and Callahan could see time as return
specialists this season.
With a young, but experienced
corps of players coming back, the 2007
Bulldogs eager to prove they belong
among the conference’s elite. And Union
will get its fi rst shot on Sept. 1 when it
takes on University of the Cumberlands
(Ky.) at 7 p.m. in Corbin, Ky. The Bulldogs’
home opener is set for Sept. 8 against
Lambuth (Tenn.) University. Both of
Union’s contests versus non-MSC teams
are road game at Malone (Ohio) College
and at Frostburg State (Md.) University.
ATHLETICS AT UNION
The depth of Union College Athletics drawn out over a century and covers a wide variety
of sporting events, some traditional, some not. The rich history of Union athletics began with
the women’s basketball team of 1905, which was followed by football the same year.
Men’s basketball, tennis and baseball were added in 1906. The addition of a variety of
sports has continued to enrich the long history of Union College athletics. The progressive
athletic department that began with a women’s team continues to shift and expand to
accommodate a wide variety of athletes.
In 2006, Union sponsors a total of 21 athletic programs, including baseball, men’s and
women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, cycling, men’s and women’s golf,
football, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s swimming, men’s and
women’s tennis, men’s and women’s track and fi eld (indoor and outdoor), and volleyball.
Union has garnered much success on the fi eld, court, track, trail and in the water, especially in
recent years. Since 1990, Union has captured 41 conference championships and has had a team
advance to a national tournament 19 times, garnering its fi rst team national title in 2002 when
the mountain biking team won the NCCA Division II National Championship. In the recent
years, Union has had nine persons named to the NAIA All-American First and Second Teams.
Some of the highlights during Union’s fi rst 100 years of intercollegiate athletics are:
• 1955, Ernie Trosper was named a NAIA All-American in Men’s Basketball, fi rst Union
student-athlete to receive the honor in school history. He was also the fi rst player in
school history to score over 2,000 points in a career.
• Juliana Filipe scored career goal No. 138 to become the all-time leading goal scorer in collegiate soccer history - all divisions, all
genders. She fi nished with 145 career goals and was named a First Team All-American in 2001.
• Union wins back-to-back-to-back KIAC and District 32 baseball championships.
• First and only undefeated season in football program history as Union goes 5-0-2, outscoring its opponents 79-21 with four shutouts
and wins over Eastern Kentucky (14-7) and Morehead State (15-8).
• Trailing 60-40 with 10:08 to play, Union reels off 17 consecutive points to pull within three of No. 7 Georgetown (Ky.) College
in men’s basketball. After a Georgetown basket made it a fi ve-point game, the Bulldogs scored the next nine points with D.J.
Washington accounting for six of them to take a 66-62 advantage. Georgetown added a free throw with 1:13 remaining, but Union
held on for the 66-63 win. Durrell Robinson led the way with 27 points and eight rebounds.
• The Lady Bulldog soccer team fi nishes the regular season ranked No. 1 in the nation and qualifi ed for the NAIA National Tournament,
advancing all the way to the Final Four before being eliminated by eventual champion Westmont (Calif.) College. Freshman
Alessandra Tavoloni and senior Ana Bruni earn NAIA First Team All-American honors.
• Cherie Maue earned NAIA All-American honors in three swimming events, having made it to the fi nals of the 200 backstroke, the 200
individual medley and the 400 individual medley. Maue placed sixth in all three events.
• Cindy Chapman (the only woman in the KIAC playing tennis) defeated Joe Carini in tennis at Lincoln Memorial University, 7-6, 6-3.
• Dan Sullivan caught back-to-back no-hitters versus Pikeville (Ky.) College in the same day as Union won both baseball games 10-0 and
2-0.
• In the fi rst two years of the program, Alice Foster qualifi es for the NAIA
Women’s Golf National Tournament as an individual. In 1999, she placed 48th and
was 32nd in 2000.
After leaving Union, a number of student-athletes have experienced careers in
the professional ranks. Nine former baseball players have turned professional, while
fi ve footballers made the jump to the next level. James Anderson, a former Bulldog
standout on the hardwood, was drafted by the Portland Trailblazers of the National
Basketball Association and spent seven years with the club. Brandon Ketron will join
the list by being signed as a free agent of the New York Yankees.
As the individual and team success has grown over the years, so too has Union’s
athletic facilities. Since 1998, every athletic facility has undergone some form of
renovation, giving Union one of the top overall athletic facilities in the NAIA. With
the refurbishment and construction of the tennis courts, Union has shown once again
its commitment to providing its student-athletes the best possible amenities in their
quest for success.
With one century of success in the books, Union looks forward to continued success
as new athletes and coaches continue to help shape and strengthen the Bulldog
tradition.
20
On April 24, 1995, the presidents of
member schools, meeting in Nashville, Tenn.,
formed the Mid-South Conference to serve as
the competitive base for their entire sports
programs. The move effectively merged the
athletic pursuits of similar institutions. The
conference is unique in its broad based athletic
competition for men and women, offering
championships in 15 sports.
The president of each school serves on the
Board of Directors which directly oversees
the conference and the offi ce of the commissioner.
This administrative “hands on” role of
each school’s president is unique among athletic
conferences and ensures a proper balance in
the academic pursuits of student athletes.
True to its commitment to broad based
athletic competition, the Mid-South Conference
recognizes the value of extensive campus
based sports programs that maximizes the
opportunities for athletic competition among
their students.
Championships are awarded in the following
sports: Men - baseball, basketball, cross country,
football, golf, soccer and tennis; Women
- basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball,
tennis and volleyball; Co-ed - cheerleading.
THE NAIA
THE NAIA: A PROUD PAST, A DYNAMIC FUTURE
In searching for the NAIA’s place in
the history of sports and higher education,
several consistencies are revealed.
Among them is the dedication to academic
achievement above athletic excellence.
Also apparent is the organization’s role as a
trailblazer in providing equal opportunities
for all student-athletes. Above all, there is
an expectation of ethical behavior and a
commitment to scholarship, sportsmanship
and leadership.
It is paradoxical that such a lasting,
dynamic contribution to collegiate sports
began with a mundane note in the first
recorded history of the Association: “The
first general session of the ‘Organizing
Convention’ of the National Association of
Intercollegiate Basketball (NAIB) was held
in the Phillips Hotel, Kansas City, Missouri, at
10 a.m., Sunday, March 10, 1940.”
But the seed from which the NAIB
sprouted was planted two blocks away
at Municipal Auditorium. It was there in
1937 that a men’s basketball tournament
tipped off which has become the longest
continuous national collegiate tournament
in any sport. Further, out of that small-college
basketball tournament, and the NAIB, grew an
Association that now includes more than 360 colleges
and universi ties and conducts two dozen national
championship events.
The tournament was the brainchild of Emil S. Liston,
Dr. James Naismith, Frank Cramer, and a group of Kansas
City business leaders who wanted to provide Kansas
City-area fans with exciting amateur competition and
to provide a framework for small colleges and universities
to determine a national basketball champion.
The original eight-team tournament expanded to
32 teams in 1938 and suspended play only for World
War II in 1944 before 16 teams were invited the following
year and the fi eld got back to full strength by
1946. Qualifying tournaments became mandatory at
the district level in 1951.
In 1948, the NAIB affirmed its commitment to
equality by becoming the fi rst national organization to
offer intercollegiate postseason opportunities to black
student-athletes. Unprecedented action was taken in
1953 when historically black institutions were voted
into membership.
One year previous to the inclusion of historically
black institutions, another form of expansion occurred.
In 1952, as a result of the expressed desires of the
member institutions, appropriate steps were taken
by which the NAIB was transformed into the National
Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), and
the fi rst all-encompassing set of rules and standards
was adopted.
With the Association’s new name came the addition
of national championships in golf, tennis and outdoor
track and fi eld. Football, cross country, baseball and
swimming and diving were added to the championships
calendar in 1956. Wrestling (1958), soccer (1959),
bowling (1962-78), gymnastics (1964-84), indoor track
and fi eld (1966) and men’s volleyball (1969-80) were
added later.
Another signifi cant step occurred in 1957 when the
Association’s headquarters moved from the campus of
George Pepperdine College in Los Angeles to Kansas
City to better serve the membership from a centralized
location.
Two major changes were made during the 1970s.
An extensive study was completed in 1970 which
paved the way for two divisions of football. In 1997,
football was consolidated to one division again as the
Football Coaches Association cited a narrowing gap
between enrollment size and philosophy of the two
divisions. In 1976, the men’s basketball tournament was
moved from the confi nes of the Municipal Auditorium
to Crosby Kemper Arena, also in Kansas City, marking
the fi rst time since 1937 that the tournament had been
held in a different arena.
The NAIA revolutionized national collegiate athletics
with the establishment of athletics programs for
women on August 1, 1980. Offi cial notice on that date
followed a mail vote by the membership on May 1 that
supported becoming the fi rst organization to offer
collegiate athletics to both men and women. Championships
for women began that year with basketball,
cross country, gymnastics, indoor and outdoor track and
fi eld, softball, tennis and volleyball. Soccer was added
in 1984, and golf was included in 1995.
Another important chapter in the history of the
NAIA unfolded in 1992 when the Association voted
to move its headquarters from Kansas City to Tulsa. On
August 1, 1993, the NAIA opened its doors in Tulsa and
began a new era. Moving with the national offi ce was
the Division I Men’s Basketball National Championship
which had been held in Kansas City for
56 years.
During the 1993 NAIA National Convention
in Atlanta, the waves of change
once again washed over the Association.
The membership voted to institute affi liated
conference and regional groupings
and discontinue the use of district play
as a means of qualifi cation for national
championships.
Since 1937, the NAIA has administered
programs and championships in proper
balance with the overall educational experience.
In 2000, the NAIA reaffi rmed its
purpose to enhance the character-building
aspects of sport. Through Champions of
Character, the NAIA seeks to create an
environment in which every student-athlete,
coach, offi cial and spectator is committed
to the true spirit of competition
through five tenets: respect, integrity,
responsibility, servant leadership and
sportsmanship.
Everything has come full circle. The
NAIA relocated its National Offi ce in July
of 2001 to Olathe, Kansas, just miles from
Gardner where the idea for the smallcollege
basketball tournament gave rise to the NAIA.
Now, nearly 65 years after that initial tournament, the
NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball National Championship
returned to Municipal Auditorium, the arena that
was home to so many memories from 1937-74.
In July of 2007, the National Offi ce moved once
again, but not too far from Olathe. The NAIA relocated
its headquarters to downtown Kansas City, Mo., as it
returned to its roots.
2006 IN REVIEW
e Union Bulldogs e
22
The 2006 Union College football
season can be categorized under the
No. 3.
The Bulldogs had three different
quarterbacks due to injuries. First,
the season started with Joey Waters
returning following the third best
season in Union history with 2,059
yards. A season-ending injury in the
Pikeville (Ky.) College game brought
in Kyle Callahan until a shoulder injury
sidelined him for a game. Union then
turned to Luke Moore to direct the
Bulldog offense for the Frostburg State
(Md.) University contest.
Secondly, Ty Harris helped seal a
victory at Chowan (N.C.) University
when he intercepted his third pass of
the game on the fi nal play at the Union
seven yard line. His three interceptions
tied the Union record and he also
returned one for a 60-yard score.
Additionally, freshman running back
Terence Pollock rose to the forefront in
the month of October to reel off three
straight 100-yard games. It marked
the fi rst time a Bulldog has rushed for
over 100 yards in three-straight games
since 1994.
When the season came to an end,
Union stood with a 2-8 record.However
Bethel’s victory over Union was later
declared a forfeit to give the Bulldogs
a 3-7 record. In Mid-South Conference
East play, Union finished with a 1-4
record.
The season started with the annual
Brass Lantern Series game with then-
No. 18 University of the Cumberlands
(Ky.). After the two rivals played a
scoreless fi rst half, Union capitalized
after a Cumberlands’ turnover to go
in front 3-0. The Patriots reeled off
14-straight points to take the lead
before Union answered with a Pollock
one-yard touchdown run in the fi nal
quarter, making it a 14-9 contest. A late
Bulldog turnover was taken back for a
score by the Patriots to make the fi nal
score 21-9.
Union evened their record with a
23-20 win over NCAA Division II foe
Chowan, despite what the stat sheet
may say. Chowan outgained the Bulldogs
324-to-120 in total yards and outrushed
the Bulldogs 197-to-42. Union only had
the ball for just under 23 minutes in the
game, but the Bulldogs capitalized on
four Chowan turnovers. Harris tied a
school record with three interceptions,
the last one happening in the end zone
to seal the win in the closing moments.
Terence Pollock could collect his 1,000th career rushing yard during his sophomore
season.
Although the loss was later turned
into a victory due to Bethel having to
forfeit its wins, turnovers plagued Union
as it dropped the 26-7 decision. The
Bulldog quarterbacking corps combined
to throw seven interceptions while the
Wildcats ate up the clock, rushing for
262 yards on 39 carries.
The next week, Union used an
off ensive explosion to pick up a 39-
17 MSC East win over Pikeville as it
racked up 431 yards in total offense.
Not to be outdone by the off ense’s
impressive day, the Bulldog defense
also controlled the Pikeville attack,
holding the Bears minus-12 yards on
the ground in their 19 attempts while
the Bears’ air attack gained 286 yards.
The Union secondary answered the call
when needed with two interceptions
at or near the goal line.
The Bulldogs could not make it two
in a row at Belhaven (Miss.) College as
turnovers plagued Union in the 26-23
defeat. Union held Belhavean to minusfi
ve yards rushing, but offensive miscues
allowed the Blazers to jump out to a
14-0 advantage as they held on for the
three-point wint. Pollock recorded
his first collegiate 100-yard rushing
performance.
Once again, Union tried to battle
back late in the fourth quarter, only
to come up short at Lambuth (Tenn.)
University. The fi nal Union drive started
on the Lambuth 47 and Pollock busted a
23-yard run on the fi rst play to set the
tone. He ran the next six plays to set up
Union at the 4-yard line for a fourthdown
play. On the eighth-straight play
to Pollock, he suffered a three-yard loss
to give the ball back to Lambuth and the
fi nal score was 9-3 in favor of Lambuth.
On the day, Pollock ran for 131 of
Union’s 181 rushing yards for his second
straight 100-yard rushing performance.
The Union run defense once again kept
an opponent under a hundred yards for
a third straight game, limiting Lambuth
to 85 yards.
In what was shaping up for a 3-
0 homecoming win for Union over
Frostburg State, a blocked punt with
2:03 left in the game resulted in an
eventual game-winning touchdown
for the visitors as the Bobcats won 7-
3. Harris had blocked a Frostburg State
fi eld goal attempt which gave the ball
to Union and preserved the lead that
resulted from a 37-yard Chad Wilson
fi eld goal with 7:48 to go in the contest.
Once again Pollick ran for a thirdstraight
100 yard game, he accumulated
127 yards on 28 carries.
Senior Brandon Webb ended his
career on Burch/Nau Field in style on
Senior Day against No. 8 Georgetown
(Ky.) College. He recorded 4.5 sacks
to set a new Union single-game record
against the MSC East rival. Despite
Webb and the defense’s efforts, Union
was unable to pull off the upset as
Georgetown scored 35 fi rst-half points
en route to 42-14 win.
Once again a game was decided late
when Callahan was stopped at the 1-
yard line on the fi nal play of the game
at West Virginia Tech. Trailing 43-37,
Union had battled back after falling
behind 22-8 at halftime and eventually
looked at a 43-23 defi cit in the fourth
quarter. After Union scored with 1:52,
they were able to recover the onside
kick setting up the potential go-ahead
score. In the end, West Virginia Tech
hung on for the Mid-South Conference
East victory.
Union started the last game of the
season on a good note when Callahan
connected with Chambers for a 27-
yard touchdown, but it was not enough
against UVa-Wise. The Bulldogs watched
as UVa-Wise scored 21 unanswered
points to capture the 21-6 win.
MILESTONES AND NOTES
• Pollock, ran to a Union freshman
record 655 yards which also ranked
as the 11 th best season total by a
Bulldog.
• Senior David Fairbanks reeled in 14
catches to move into fi fth-place on
the Union receiving list. He ended
his career with 93 catches for 1,461
yards in his four year career.
• Jake Mayfield only rushed for
269 yards in 2006, but he tied a
school record with two two-point
conversions against West Virginia
Tech.
• The fourth quarter was the time
for the Bulldog offense to shine.
Union scored 63 points in the fourth
quarter of their games while the next
best quarter was the fi rst quarter
with 36 points.
• This was apparent in the comebacks
against Chowan, Belhaven and West
Virginia Tech.
• In the 39-17 win over Pikeville, the
22-point margin-of-victory was the
largest in series history.
The 1934 Union College Bulldog
football team was the first - and to this
date, the only squad to go undefeated
in program history.
The Bulldogs went 5-0-2 and
outscored its opponents 79-21.
Union posted four shutouts during
the final four contests of the season.
Unfortunately, though, the Bulldogs
themselves were held scoreless in two
of those games, resulting in a pair of
ties for the team’s lone to blemishes
on the year.
After a 31-6 win over Lees-McRae
to open the season, Union followed
with a 14-7 win over Eastern Kentucky
and a 15-8 victory over Morehead
State. The Bulldogs were then
in a pair of 0-0 ties against East Tennessee
State and Georgetown before
getting back to their winning ways
with a 12-0 blanking of Transylvania.
Union closed out the season with a
7-0 shutout win over Louisville.
THE BRASS LANTERN GAME
e Union Bulldogs e
34
The rivalry between Union College and University of the
Cumberlands dates back to the early days of Bulldog football.
In fact, the fi rst three games Union ever played were against
Williamsburg Institute, as Cumberlands was known as in 1905.
While Cumberlands has undergone a few name changes
(after being known as Williamsburg Institute, it changed its name
to Cumberland College before becoming University of the
Cumberlands in 2005), the rivalry has remained hotly-contested
over the years.
The series got its beginnings in 1905, but after those three
contests - all of which were shutouts by the victor, the two
didn’t play against each other until the early 1920s. The last
meeting was in 1924 when Cumberland won 26-0. But then
Cumberland dropped football soon there after. Union continued
playing football through the 1941 season, but the sport was
dropped due to World War II and was not reinstated until
1984.
When Cumberland reinstated football in 1985, the rivalry
resumed with the Bulldogs winning the 1985 showdown 34-12.
The Brass Lantern was introduced as a traveling trophy for
this rivalry in 1995 with the winner of the contest keeping
the trophy until the following. The lantern represents the coal
mining industry, paying homage to major industry in southeastern
Kentucky where both colleges are located.
There have been a number memorable battles since the series
resumed. Here are some of the highlights:
• 1988 - Cumberland 36, Union 31 - The Bulldogs
were looking to put a blemish on Cumberland’s
perfect record. The game went back and forth, but
ultimately Cumberland prevailed 36-31 en route
to a 10-0 regular-season record and the Mid-South
Conference championship.
• 1995 - Union 22, Cumberland 21 - In the inaugural
Brass Lantern Game, trailing 21-7 going into the
fourth quarter, Union scored 15 fourth-quarter points
to pull out the victory. Winston Pittman scored on
a 1-yard run to make it a 21-13 game before Scott
Russell scored on a 2-yard run to make it 21-19 with
6:41 to play. Then with 12 seconds remaining, Jeremy
Macejewski connected on a 25-yard fi eld goal to give
Union the 22-21 victory.
• 1996 - Union 24, Cumberland 23 OT - The 1996
game went down to the wire and then some. Down
17-14 with 24 seconds to play, Jeremy Macejewski
booted a 24-yard fi eld goal to tie the game and send into overtime. In overtime, Scott Russell scored on a 25-yard run and Macejewski added
the PAT to put Union up 24-17. On Cumberland’s fi rst play in overtime, Ahmad Broadnax scored on a 25-yard run, but Lance Gaudet’s PAT
attempt was no good, giving Union the 24-23 victory. Russell fi nished with 132 yards rushing on 19 carries.
• 2001 - Union 24, Cumberland 17 - The Bulldogs headed into the fourth quarter up 16-3 and appeared to be well on their way to victory.
However, Cumberland scored early in the fourth to make it 16-10, and then with 1:23 to play, Cumberland scored on a Brandon Rogers 1-yard
run to go up 17-10. Led by quarterback Bart Elam, Union used six plays to go 87 yards for the game-winning score. With 23 seconds left, Elam
punched the ball in on a 2-yard run before tossing the two-point conversion pass to Ernie Samuel for the 24-17 victory. Elam passed for 266
yards and a touchdown on 16-of-31 passing and ran for 35 yards and two touchdowns. The win was also Tommy Reid’s fi rst as the Bulldogs’
head coach.
• 2005 - Union 35, Cumberlands 34 - Cumberlands entered the game ranked No. 5 in the NAIA and appeared poised for its fi rst postseason
berth since 1988. After Union took an early 7-0 lead, Cumberlands reeled off 21 consecutive points for a 21-7 lead. Quarterback Joey Waters
hit Courtney Elesby for a 3-yard touchdown pass to pull Union within 21-14 at the half, and then Waters hooked up with Jason Buster for
an 11-yard scoring play to tie the game at 21 with 10:32 left in the third. After Cumberlands reclaimed a seven-point lead, Waters tossed
two more touchdown passes and added a two-point conversion run to put Union up 35-28 with 7:23 to play in the game. Cumberlands cut
the margin to 35-34 when Jeremy Vaught hauled in a 76-yard pass; at the 3:42 mark however, the PAT was no good as Union held on for the
win. Waters completed 28-of-44 passes for 312 yards and four touchdowns as he was named the NAIA Offensive Player of the Week.
Cumberlands went on to lose its next game in a blowout to Georgetown to fi nish the year 8-3 and out of the playoff, while Union ended 4-6
overall and in a three-way tie for second in the Mid-South Conference East with Cumberlands and Pikeville as all three had a 3-2 league mark.
• 2006 - Cumberlands 21, Union 9 - The game itself was just the typical, run-of-the-mill Union-Cumberlands matchup with the teams going
back and forth until a late fumble allowed Cumberlands to extend its fi ve-point cushion to 21-9 en route to the 12-point win. What made this
contest unique was that it was the fi rst played on a neutral site and under lights as the game was held at Campbell Field in Corbin, Ky.
