2006 SEASON IN REVIEW 2006 STATISTICS & RESULTS In a record-breaking year where the Appalachian Athletic Conference coaches predicted that Union would Þ nish sixth, the Lady Bulldogs turned some heads with a 12-6 conference record to Þ nish fourth. The team set a total of eight new school records, four team season records and four individual season records. Union, under secondyear head coach David Nicholson Þ nished 2006 with an overall record of 21-17 and it marked the Þ rst time Union has posted a 20-win season since 2003. Part of the Lady Bulldogs’ success has to be linked to Amanda Bowling. The senior setter from Louisville, Ky. became Union’s Þ rst NAIA All-American as she was named an honorable mention. She played in 136 games and she Þ nished the season with 1,427 assist and 523 digs, both single-season school records. Also, she was named NAIA Setter of the Week twice to go along with her six Region XII and seven AAC Setter of the Week awards in 2006. Bowling also earned the Setter of the Year awards for the AAC and Region XII to complement her All-Region XII and All-AAC Tournament team selections. The Lady Bulldogs might have started 2006 with a 2-4 record in August, but Union reeled off four wins in a row to begin September. Included in the winning streak were Union’s Þ rst three conference matches of the year. The streak started against Bryan (Tenn.) College and then a win at NCAA Division II foe BlueÞ eld State (W.Va.) College was followed by a pair of wins over BlueÞ eld (Va.) College. Union carried a seven-match winning streak from September into October. After the victory over Milligan (Tenn.) College on October 10, the Lady Bulldogs were 14-11 and 9-3 in conference play. Marlee Cooper earned AAC and Region XII Player of the Week for the Þ rst week of October. She accounted for 40 kills, 16 digs, six total blocks, one assist and a 0.381 hitting percent against Mountain State (W.Va.) University and Covenant (Ga.) College. After a two game skid against conference foes King (Tenn.) College and Virginia Intermont College, the Lady Bulldogs won four of their last Þ ve matches to end the month. The conference season came to an end when Union dropped a 3-2 contest to Milligan on November 2. A pair of wins over Region XII foes Mountain State (W.Va.) University and Asbury (Ky.) College in Barbourville ended the regular season at 20-15 for the Lady Bulldogs. A 3-0 win over Montreat in the Þ rst round of the AAC Tournament moved Union into a semiÞ nal contest against King. Despite the Lady Bulldogs’ best efforts, they lost 3-0 to the eventual Region XII champion. The loss set up an elimination match versus Bryan (Tenn.) College afterwards and Union was unable to advance as Bryan won 3-1 to end the season for the Lady Bulldogs. Cooper, an All-AAC Freshman team selection in 2005 did not fall into a sophomore slump as she earned All-Region XII and All-AAC honors. The Bloomington, Ill. native Þ nished 2006 with a team-high 527 kills and served 22 aces. Her .364 hitting percentage was tops in the conference while she ranked Þ fth with one block per game. Autumn Combs made it two years in a row with a Lady Bulldog on the AAC All-Freshman team. Combs, from Florence, Ky., led Union with 218 blocks which also ranked third nationally with 1.6 per game.
