LADY BULLDOG COACHING STAFF
2007 LADY BULLDOG PREVIEW
Head Coach David Nicholson
David Nicholson was named the ninth head coach of the Lady Bulldog
volleyball program in March of 2005.
In two seasons under Nicholson, Union has posted a 32-36 overall record
and 20-18 conference mark. In 2006, the Lady Bulldogs recorded their
sixth 20-win season in going 21-17 overall and 12-6 in Appalachian Athletic
Conference play. Nicholson has had one player earn NAIA All-American
Honorable Mention honors, two NAIA Setters of the Week nods, three
All-Conference First Team selections, three All-Region First Team selections
and two conference
All-Freshman Team selections.
Nicholson came to Union
after spending the past
two seasons as an assistant
at Western Carolina (N.C.)
University, a NCAA Division
I program. During that time, the Catamounts went 28-33 overall.
In 2003, Western Carolina Þ nished 26th in the NCAA in digs
per game with 17.85 per contest. Also, Kellyn Thaut was named
the Southern Conference Freshman of the Year, which marked
the Þ rst time in WCU volleyball history that a Catamount has
received the honor.
Prior to his tenure at Western Carolina, Nicholson compiled
an extensive high school coaching career. He Þ rst served as the
head coach at Crescent High School, in Port Angeles, Wash., from
1992-95, taking over a program which had not seen a victory in
over Þ ve years. In his third season as the coach there, the team
was at the top of its conference.
From 1995-97, Nicholson served as the freshman volleyball
coach at Rainier High School, in Rainier, Ore., and then was hired
as the head coach at Clatskanie High School, in Clatskanie, Ore.,
additionally coached the Tiger Club Team in Clatskanie.
In July of 2000, Nicholson made the move across the country to Hayesville, N.C., and served as the assistant
volleyball coach at Murphy High School. After his stint with Murphy, Nicholson was appointed the athletic
director and head volleyball coach of Hiwassee Dam High School, in 2001. He was involved with all aspects of
the program in this new position from scheduling to transportation of the teams.
Nicholson has also spent his spare time offi ciating high school volleyball and basketball games in the western
North Carolina area and was selected to offi ciate the 2002 3A State Championship volleyball match.
A 2005 graduate of Western Carolina, Nicholson received his Master’s in Education from Union in December
2006.
Nicholson is married to the former Jennifer Rogers of Murphy, N.C.
Assistant Coach Whitney Erb
Whitney Erb begins her second stint as the assistant coach of the Lady
Bulldog volleyball program.
The Sarasota, Fla. native spent one year as the team’s assistant in 2005
before serving as an assistant at NCAA Division I Seton Hall (N.J.) University.
While as a member of the Pirates’ staff, the team posted a 16-14 overall
record in 2006. She has also coached the Cut Shot, Birmingham and Alabama
Junior Volleyball clubs. She also traveled to Europe with the Bring It
Promotions International Volleyball Juniors Summer Tour.
Erb graduated from the University of Montevallo (Ala.) with a B.A. in
Communications in May of 2005. While at Montevallo - a NCAA Division
II school, Erb was a four-year member of the Lady Falcon squad. She accumulated
738 digs, 363 kills and 119 total blocks in 116 matches during
her career.
Prior to Montevallo, Erb played for Sarasota High and the Whitesands
Volleyball Club. She was a three-time All-Area Selection and helped her
team win the regional championship in 2000 to place 11th at nationals that year.
After a fourth place Þ nish in the
Appalachian Athletic Conference and
the team’s Þ rst 20-win season since
2003, Union College head coach David
Nicholson looks to guide the Lady
Bulldogs to their Þ rst NAIA Region XII
Tournament in four seasons.
The Lady Bulldogs went 21-17
overall and 12-6 in league play in 2006.
In the conference tournament, Union
won its opener over Montreat (N.C.)
College in a sweep before was swept
by host King (Tenn.) College and lost 3- 1
to Bryan (Tenn.) College to end the
year.
With Þ ve returning starters,
advancing to the region tournament
is an attainable goal. However, the
one starter not returning is NAIA All-
American honorable mention setter
Amanda Bowling, the program’s career
and season assist record holder.
Nicholson is in the unusual position of having a young team with no seniors. Yet, the team is
experienced.
All-Region XII Team member Marlee Cooper (Bloomington, Ill.) returns for her junior season at
middle blocker. In 137 games last year, she led the team with 527 kills to break her own record of
457 she set in her freshman season. Also, her 0.364 hitting percentage led the conference while
her kills was second best.
“She is a solid player for us and has been a major contributor since her freshman season,”
Nicholson said. “This year she needs to take more of a leadership roll.”
Autumn Combs (Florence, Ky.) led the conference with 218 blocks and her 1.6 blocks per game
ranked third best in the NAIA, earning her a spot on the league’s All-Freshmen Team. Nicholson
commented that Combs has quite the defensive presence but needs to build on her offensive
game as her 0.809 kills-per-game average (110 kills in 136 games) indicates.
Also returning for a run at an AAC and Region XII title is junior outside hitter Stephanie Pateman
(Weyburn, Canada), sophomore setter/defensive specialist Christina Prindle (Florence, Ky.), junior
outside hitter/defensive specialist Elisabeth Howard (Georgetown, Texas.) and sophomore outside
hitter Brooke Vinovich (Somerset, Ky.). The quartet combined to play in 548 games last year.
Pateman was second on the team with 445 kills, while Prindle was second in the assist category
with 77. Howard Þ nished 2006 with 282 digs with Vinovich ranking third on the team in kills at
286.
When it comes to replacing Bowling, Nicholson has a good number of potential candidates, who
will compete during preseason for the starting setter position. The Lady Bulldog coach hopes to
have one or two quality setters in place before the Þ rst match against Ohio Valley University at
the Lincoln Memorial (Tenn.) University Tournament on August 24.
The roster is Þ lled with 24 players with nine incoming players, seven from the high school ranks
with two college transfers. Junior Deena O’Hare (Perry, Canada) comes to Union from Seneca
College, which is located in Toronto, Canada, and sophomore Melissa Shannon (Danville, Ky.) comes
from Mid-Continent (Ky.) University. The rest of the team is Þ lled with nine sophomores and eight
juniors without a senior on the roster.
Besides their 18-game AAC schedule, Union will travel to play in tournaments at Lincoln
Memorial, Belhaven (Miss.) College and Tiffi n (Ohio) University along with the Union College
Tournament. Union opens the season at the Lincoln Memorial Tournament on Aug. 24-25. The Lady
Bulldogs’ Þ rst home match is also their conference opener as they will play host to Milligan (Tenn.)
College on Sept. 6.
