THIS IS UNION!
ROBSION ARENA
In 1879 a group of progressive citizens followed the prompting of Abraham H. Harritt, a salesman of school
desks, and James T. Gibson, the owner of a general-merchandise store, to establish a college in the Barbourville
community. W.W. Sawyers and James D. Black met in the offi ce of Judge J.H. Tinsley and formed a stock company
to launch Union College.
Black, who later served as president
of Union from 1910-12 and later served
as governor of Kentucky, is given credit
for having named the school “Union.”
The institution would serve as a unifying
inß uence for the community regardless of
church affi liation or political differences.
The Articles of Incorporation were drawn
up on Oct. 18, 1879, and provided for the
issuance of $20,000 worth of capital stock.
The London Echo of Dec. 12, 1879, carrying
its Þ rst announcement of Union, listed the
corporation as being “designed to Þ ll a
long-felt want in eastern Kentucky, eastern
Tennessee and western Virginia.”
Union was operated under local leadership
for the Þ rst few years, but began to
experience severe Þ nancial struggles. On Oct.
25, 1886, the property was “cried off” to
Green Elliott, who purchased it for Dr. Daniel
Stevenson for the sum of $4,425 with Mrs.
CENTENNIAL HALL
Mahala Dowis furnishing the funds. The renowned Kentucky educator had been authorized to attend the sale
by the Board of Education of the Kentucky Annual Conference of The United Methodist Church.
Union’s athletic mascot, the English Bulldog, was introduced during the fall of 1925. The breed, whose
ancestors were developed in Britain before the 13th century from the British mastiff and other breeds, was
used for bullbaiting and dogÞ ghting until these sports were outlawed in the 19th century.
In 1967, the Alpha Phi Omega service fraternity of Union College purchased the Þ rst living mascot named
Mack. He was presented at the Homecoming basketball game that same year. A registered English Bulldog,
Mack died in 1971. His remains are buried in an area adjacent to Union’s current baseball complex.
During the past seven years, Union College began a major campus renovation and building project. Plans
included the creation of new student housing, expanded academic and athletic centers, and the upgrade of
existing facilities. Projects completed were the construction of the Stewart Apartments, Sharp Academic
Center, Black Technology Center and the renovation of Speed Hall. Union’s athletic facilities have also received
facelifts as well. A new brick backstop erected in 2001 at Sanders Field at Jerry W. Carey Baseball Stadium,
while a new outÞ eld fence was built in 2007. Robsion Arena recently had the ß oor repainted, new scoreboards
installed and a new lights, roof and gutters installed. Two new tennis courts were constructed, while the
existing four were resurfaced, and a new press box was constructed at Burch/Nau Field (football) in 2003.
Most recently, new locker rooms were built for the football team, while the locker rooms for volleyball and
women’s basketball have been expanded and refurbished.
Union offers 21 majors in the undergraduate curriculum, which lead to a bachelor’s degree. Minors are also
available in many of these programs. In addition, the college offers pre-professional programs.
Union College also offers a graduate program with graduate work in education leading to a Master’s degree,
Fifth-Year CertiÞ cate and Rank I CertiÞ cate.
How many independent, liberal arts colleges in the Commonwealth of Kentucky can boast of a Nobel Prizewinning
graduate? Union College can certainly lay claim to that. Dr. Phillip A. Sharp, the co-winner of the 1993
Nobel Prize for medicine, received his bachelor’s degree from Union in 1966.
Campus life starts from the moment the students arrive on campus and continues through the end of the
school year. Students can participate in more than 30 campus organizations such as music, theatre productions,
sports, student government, religious activities and clubs.
A recent expansion of the school’s outdoor program includes rental services for canoes and mountain bikes,
as well as various hiking expeditions throughout the year.
Union offers 21 intercollegiate varsity sports which are affi liated with the National Association of
Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) as well as a cheerleading squad. In 2002, Union became a member of the
Appalachian Athletic Conference, but it still competes in the Mid-South Conference in football.
Constructed in 1963, the
John M. Robsion Jr. Memorial
Arena has served as the
home court for the Lady
Bulldog volleyball program
since the 1992 season when
volleyball was introduced as
a sponsored sport. The arena’s
seating capacity is 1,800 and
the gymnasium has recently
undergone signiÞ cant renovation.
Recently, the lobby and
gym areas have been totally
repainted and the ß oor was
reÞ nished. New scoreboards and a lighting system were installed for the 2003-04 season as well as
a new roof and gutters. This year, the gym ß oor was reÞ nished and the locker rooms were totally
renovated.
Besides the gym, Robsion Arena also houses an indoor swimming pool, an athletic training room,
lockerrooms for the the men’s basketball, women’s basketball, volleyball and football teams and
classrooms and offi ces for the Health, Physical Education and Recreation Department.
Originally, the building was known as the Physical Education Building. The name was changed to
the John M. Robsion Jr. Memorial Arena in 1990 to honor one of the school’s alums and long-time
supporter.
Robsion was a 1919 graduate of the old Union College Academy. Though his professional and
political life took him all over the world, Robsion never forgot his roots and ties to Union as he
remained a loyal supporter of the school.
Sports Medicine
The Union College Sports Medicine staff has two
training rooms at its disposal with the one in the
Athletic Complex at the Lakeside Center serving as
the staff’s main offi ce of operation. The other training
room is located in Robsion Arena so that the staff can
better serve and meet the needs of the Union College
basketball and volleyball teams.
At Lakeside, the training room has several amenities
and state-of-the-art equipment readily available to
meet staff and student-athletes’ needs.
Housed at this facility is: a three-station taping area, a medical station, Þ ve treatment tables,
three ultrasound machines, two electrical stimulation machines, a large functional rehabilitation
and strengthening area, a universal strengthening machine, one Total Gym, rehabilitation and core
stability tools, a wet area with whirlpool and stand, ice machine and coolers, bathroom, shower
and laundry facilities a John Deere Gator, an offi ce area, two weight scales, a large hydrocollator
and a storage area.
LADY BULLDOG COACHING STAFF
2007 LADY BULLDOG PREVIEW
Head Coach David Nicholson
David Nicholson was named the ninth head coach of the Lady Bulldog
volleyball program in March of 2005.
In two seasons under Nicholson, Union has posted a 32-36 overall record
and 20-18 conference mark. In 2006, the Lady Bulldogs recorded their
sixth 20-win season in going 21-17 overall and 12-6 in Appalachian Athletic
Conference play. Nicholson has had one player earn NAIA All-American
Honorable Mention honors, two NAIA Setters of the Week nods, three
All-Conference First Team selections, three All-Region First Team selections
and two conference
All-Freshman Team selections.
Nicholson came to Union
after spending the past
two seasons as an assistant
at Western Carolina (N.C.)
University, a NCAA Division
I program. During that time, the Catamounts went 28-33 overall.
In 2003, Western Carolina Þ nished 26th in the NCAA in digs
per game with 17.85 per contest. Also, Kellyn Thaut was named
the Southern Conference Freshman of the Year, which marked
the Þ rst time in WCU volleyball history that a Catamount has
received the honor.
Prior to his tenure at Western Carolina, Nicholson compiled
an extensive high school coaching career. He Þ rst served as the
head coach at Crescent High School, in Port Angeles, Wash., from
1992-95, taking over a program which had not seen a victory in
over Þ ve years. In his third season as the coach there, the team
was at the top of its conference.
From 1995-97, Nicholson served as the freshman volleyball
coach at Rainier High School, in Rainier, Ore., and then was hired
as the head coach at Clatskanie High School, in Clatskanie, Ore.,
in 1997. While there, he guided his team to a league championship and a sixth place Þ nish in the state. He
followed that up with a seventh place Þ nish at the state level the following year. During this time, Nicholson
additionally coached the Tiger Club Team in Clatskanie.
In July of 2000, Nicholson made the move across the country to Hayesville, N.C., and served as the assistant
volleyball coach at Murphy High School. After his stint with Murphy, Nicholson was appointed the athletic
director and head volleyball coach of Hiwassee Dam High School, in 2001. He was involved with all aspects of
the program in this new position from scheduling to transportation of the teams.
Nicholson has also spent his spare time offi ciating high school volleyball and basketball games in the western
North Carolina area and was selected to offi ciate the 2002 3A State Championship volleyball match.
A 2005 graduate of Western Carolina, Nicholson received his Master’s in Education from Union in December
2006.
Nicholson is married to the former Jennifer Rogers of Murphy, N.C.
Assistant Coach Whitney Erb
Whitney Erb begins her second stint as the assistant coach of the Lady
Bulldog volleyball program.
The Sarasota, Fla. native spent one year as the team’s assistant in 2005
before serving as an assistant at NCAA Division I Seton Hall (N.J.) University.
While as a member of the Pirates’ staff, the team posted a 16-14 overall
record in 2006. She has also coached the Cut Shot, Birmingham and Alabama
Junior Volleyball clubs. She also traveled to Europe with the Bring It
Promotions International Volleyball Juniors Summer Tour.
Erb graduated from the University of Montevallo (Ala.) with a B.A. in
Communications in May of 2005. While at Montevallo - a NCAA Division
II school, Erb was a four-year member of the Lady Falcon squad. She accumulated
738 digs, 363 kills and 119 total blocks in 116 matches during
her career.
Prior to Montevallo, Erb played for Sarasota High and the Whitesands
Volleyball Club. She was a three-time All-Area Selection and helped her
team win the regional championship in 2000 to place 11th at nationals that year.
After a fourth place Þ nish in the
Appalachian Athletic Conference and
the team’s Þ rst 20-win season since
2003, Union College head coach David
Nicholson looks to guide the Lady
Bulldogs to their Þ rst NAIA Region XII
Tournament in four seasons.
The Lady Bulldogs went 21-17
overall and 12-6 in league play in 2006.
In the conference tournament, Union
won its opener over Montreat (N.C.)
College in a sweep before was swept
by host King (Tenn.) College and lost 3- 1
to Bryan (Tenn.) College to end the
year.
With Þ ve returning starters,
advancing to the region tournament
is an attainable goal. However, the
one starter not returning is NAIA All-
American honorable mention setter
Amanda Bowling, the program’s career
and season assist record holder.
Nicholson is in the unusual position of having a young team with no seniors. Yet, the team is
experienced.
All-Region XII Team member Marlee Cooper (Bloomington, Ill.) returns for her junior season at
middle blocker. In 137 games last year, she led the team with 527 kills to break her own record of
457 she set in her freshman season. Also, her 0.364 hitting percentage led the conference while
her kills was second best.
“She is a solid player for us and has been a major contributor since her freshman season,”
Nicholson said. “This year she needs to take more of a leadership roll.”
Autumn Combs (Florence, Ky.) led the conference with 218 blocks and her 1.6 blocks per game
ranked third best in the NAIA, earning her a spot on the league’s All-Freshmen Team. Nicholson
commented that Combs has quite the defensive presence but needs to build on her offensive
game as her 0.809 kills-per-game average (110 kills in 136 games) indicates.
Also returning for a run at an AAC and Region XII title is junior outside hitter Stephanie Pateman
(Weyburn, Canada), sophomore setter/defensive specialist Christina Prindle (Florence, Ky.), junior
outside hitter/defensive specialist Elisabeth Howard (Georgetown, Texas.) and sophomore outside
hitter Brooke Vinovich (Somerset, Ky.). The quartet combined to play in 548 games last year.
Pateman was second on the team with 445 kills, while Prindle was second in the assist category
with 77. Howard Þ nished 2006 with 282 digs with Vinovich ranking third on the team in kills at
286.
When it comes to replacing Bowling, Nicholson has a good number of potential candidates, who
will compete during preseason for the starting setter position. The Lady Bulldog coach hopes to
have one or two quality setters in place before the Þ rst match against Ohio Valley University at
the Lincoln Memorial (Tenn.) University Tournament on August 24.
The roster is Þ lled with 24 players with nine incoming players, seven from the high school ranks
with two college transfers. Junior Deena O’Hare (Perry, Canada) comes to Union from Seneca
College, which is located in Toronto, Canada, and sophomore Melissa Shannon (Danville, Ky.) comes
from Mid-Continent (Ky.) University. The rest of the team is Þ lled with nine sophomores and eight
juniors without a senior on the roster.
Besides their 18-game AAC schedule, Union will travel to play in tournaments at Lincoln
Memorial, Belhaven (Miss.) College and Tiffi n (Ohio) University along with the Union College
Tournament. Union opens the season at the Lincoln Memorial Tournament on Aug. 24-25. The Lady
Bulldogs’ Þ rst home match is also their conference opener as they will play host to Milligan (Tenn.)
College on Sept. 6.
2006 SEASON IN REVIEW
2006 STATISTICS & RESULTS
In a record-breaking year
where the Appalachian
Athletic Conference
coaches predicted that
Union would Þ nish sixth,
the Lady Bulldogs turned
some heads with a 12-6
conference record to
Þ nish fourth. The team set
a total of eight new school
records, four team season
records and four individual
season records.
Union, under secondyear
head coach David
Nicholson Þ nished 2006
with an overall record of
21-17 and it marked the
Þ rst time Union has posted
a 20-win season since 2003.
Part of the Lady
Bulldogs’ success has to be
linked to Amanda Bowling.
The senior setter from Louisville, Ky. became Union’s Þ rst NAIA All-American as she was named an
honorable mention. She played in 136 games and she Þ nished the season with 1,427 assist and 523
digs, both single-season school records. Also, she was named NAIA Setter of the Week twice to
go along with her six Region XII and seven AAC Setter of the Week awards in 2006. Bowling also
earned the Setter of the Year awards for the AAC and Region XII to complement her All-Region
XII and All-AAC Tournament team selections.
The Lady Bulldogs might have started 2006 with a 2-4 record in August, but Union reeled off
four wins in a row to begin September. Included in the winning streak were Union’s Þ rst three
conference matches of the year. The streak started against Bryan (Tenn.) College and then a win at
NCAA Division II foe BlueÞ eld State (W.Va.) College was followed by a pair of wins over BlueÞ eld
(Va.) College.
Union carried a seven-match winning streak from September into October. After the victory
over Milligan (Tenn.) College on October 10, the Lady Bulldogs were 14-11 and 9-3 in conference
play. Marlee Cooper earned AAC and Region XII Player of the Week for the Þ rst week of
October. She accounted for 40 kills, 16 digs, six total blocks, one assist and a 0.381 hitting percent
against Mountain State (W.Va.) University and Covenant (Ga.) College. After a two game skid against
conference foes King (Tenn.) College and Virginia Intermont College, the Lady Bulldogs won four of
their last Þ ve matches to end the month.
The conference season came to an end when Union dropped a 3-2 contest to Milligan on
November 2. A pair of wins over Region XII foes Mountain State (W.Va.) University and Asbury (Ky.)
College in Barbourville ended the regular season at 20-15 for the Lady Bulldogs.
A 3-0 win over Montreat in the Þ rst round of the AAC Tournament moved Union into a
semiÞ nal contest against King. Despite the Lady Bulldogs’ best efforts, they lost 3-0 to the eventual
Region XII champion. The loss set up an elimination match versus Bryan (Tenn.) College afterwards
and Union was unable to advance as Bryan won 3-1 to end the season for the Lady Bulldogs.
Cooper, an All-AAC Freshman team selection in 2005 did not fall into a sophomore slump
as she earned All-Region XII and All-AAC honors. The Bloomington, Ill. native Þ nished 2006 with
a team-high 527 kills and served 22 aces. Her .364 hitting percentage was tops in the conference
while she ranked Þ fth with one block per game. Autumn Combs made it two years in a row with
a Lady Bulldog on the AAC All-Freshman team. Combs, from Florence, Ky., led Union with 218
blocks which also ranked third nationally with 1.6 per game. She also recorded 110 kills in 136
games.
Providing Balanced Athletic
Programs for Today’s Student-Athletes
Throughout its history, the National
Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA)
has provided strong leadership for all aspects
of intercollegiate sports. Since its introduction
of intercollegiate championship basketball in
1937, the NAIA has maintained the highest
standards while administering Þ rst-rate athletic
programs.
Time and time again, the NAIA has stepped
forward to address the important issues of
the day - be it racial integration in the 1940s
and 1950s or establishing the Þ rst women’s
championship program in 1980. The NAIA has
not been afraid to enact changes while others
have watched and waited.
In the past decade, presidents of the NAIA
colleges and universities have assumed a
position of responsible leadership. The NAIA’s
Council of Presidents, the organization’s primary
governing body, is comprised of 32 college and
university presidents from all regions of the
United States.
During the 1990s, the waves of change once
again washed over the NAIA. The membership
voted to institute affi liated conference and
regional groupings and discontinued the use
of district play as a means of qualiÞ cation
for national championships, marking the Þ rst
time since the NAIA’s creation that district
competition would not be used.
Since 1937, the NAIA has adminisistered
athletic programs and championships in proper
balance with the overall collegiate educational
experience. Serving higher education in this
manner is a responsibility the NAIA does not
take lightly.
The Appalachian Athletic Conference
(AAC) is a 10-member conference sanctioned
by the National Association of Intercollegiate
Athletics (NAIA). The league has members in
Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, Tennessee
and Virginia.
The AAC participates in Division II in men’s
and women’s basketball and sponsors six men’s
sports and six women’s sports. For men, the
conference offers championships in: baseball,
basketball, cross country, golf, soccer and
tennis. For women, championships are awarded
in: basketball, cross country, soccer, softball,
tennis and volleyball.
In May of 2003, the AAC selected John
Sullivan as its Þ rst-ever Commissioner. Prior to
taking the post, Sullivan served as Montreat
College’s athletic director for six years and
was named AAC and NAIA Region XII Athletic
Director of the Year in 2000.
