CLUB TO CONTINUE TRADITION OF FOUR FAMILY RODEOS FOR 2012
The Mandan Horse & Saddle Club board of directors for 2012 has been busy making
plans for a full slate of events in 2012. Family rodeos are scheduled as follows:
· June 9
· July 7
· August 11
· September 15 - Wild West Rodeo
· Rain-out dates: Aug. 19 and Sept. 23
The slate of events remains the same. The event
order was adjusted slightly, putting the keyhole
race ahead of goat tying. Entry fees were
increased to accommodate a rising stock fees
and other fixed costs like insurance, judging fees,
arena and porta potty rent.
See enclosed flyer for more info. Details about
each rodeo will be made available as sponsors
and prizes are confirmed. If you havent provided
your e-mail address, please do so by sending an
e-mail to President Sara Vollmer at
troy@vollmerangus.com.
Buckles will be awarded to all-around winners at
all rodeos with reserve all-around through fifth
overall winners receiving other terrific prizes. The
exception is the Wild West Rodeo. Buckles will be
awarded to event winners. All-around winners in
each age group will receive saddles provided
sponsors can be secured by July 1.
Year-end prizes will be awarded to all-around,
reserve all-around and event winners based on
points at four family rodeos. The year-end awards
celebration will be held in January or February.

Two new sponsor options are offered for 2012:
· Website Home Page $500 Logo on top
banner of home page to
www.mandanhorseandsaddle.com. The
website is the main method of entry for
contestants. It is also generates visits for
results, info on events, rules, photos, etc.
· Barrel Covers $500 Sponsor name and
logo on all three barrels used at all family
rodeos, typically 100 runs or more per rodeo.

· Wild West Saddles $750 Sponsor name tooled onto saddle fenders or skirt on
both sides. Half saddle available for $400.
· Buckle Sponsors $125 covers all-around buckles for a regular family rodeo or
an event championship buckle for the Wild West Rodeo.
· Overall Prizes Amounts of $75, $50, $25 and $15 are needed for reserve allaround
and third through fifth overall awards for each rodeo.

RULES CLARIFIED
New rulebooks are posted on the website at
www.mandanhorseandsaddle.com and will be
available at rodeos. Changes made for 2012
included the following clarifications:
· Circling a horse after entering the date and prior
to running is allowed.
· Procedure for the handling of a tie between
contestants in an event if a material prize is
involved, another prize will be awarded. Points
and monetary prizes will be split equally
between or among contestants tying in an
event.
Grievance procedure if the grievance is about an
event or a judges decision in an event, the
grievance must be presented to the committee by
the end of the event or before the next event begins
FACEBOOK PAGE TO EXTEND OUTREACH
The MHSC board determined that launching a
Facebook page for the club in 2012 would be
beneficial. It will be administered by the youth
directors with assistance from adult board
members. Purposes will include:
· To provide a means for members and friends to
share info such as
o Photos from rodeos
o Inquiries about partners in team roping
o Travel planning
· Issuing reminders to enter rodeos and news
about coming events
· Sharing links to sponsoring companies and
organizations.

EVENT COORDINATOR POSITIONS NEARLY
FILLED, POLE BENDING HELPS NEEDED

Coordinators duties include recruiting additional
helpers for events, setting up equipment, sorting
stock and other tasks associated with the various
events. Helpers are still needed for pole bending. If
you would be willing to assist, please contact

MATCHING FUNDS APPROVED FOR SHED
The club applied for two grants this year. The
Mandan Park Board approved $1,250 in matching
funds toward the purchase of a new equipment
storage shed. A second application was submitted
to the Mandan Progress Organization for a City of
Mandan event grants. The club has not received
notice of a decision on the latter application.
HIGH SCHOOL & JR HIGH RODEOS PLANNED
The board has again approved scheduling N.D.
High School Rodeo Association season rodeos on
Aug. 25-25 and a N.D. Junior High Division Rodeo
on Sept. 16. More donations and volunteerism will
be needed for both rodeo weekends. Planning
meetings will be held later in the year.

INCENTIVES OFFERED TO VOLUNTEERS
The club is introducing a trial program in 2012 to
encourage more advance help with the high school
and junior high rodeos hosted by the club. The
incentives are also intended to entice more
volunteerism from member families that dont have
contestants in high school or junior high rodeos and
to reward those who do assist.
· Criteria Members 10 years of age or older
who:
o Secure at least $200 in sponsorship
o Volunteer/assist at least 2 hours in advance
of rodeo
o Volunteer/assist at least 2 hours during
rodeo
Volunteerism will be tracked through preregistration
with the rodeo chair for needed tasks.
· Incentive MHSC gift certificates
redeemable toward entry fees at family rodeos
(expire within 1 year from time of issuance)
o $25 for achieving one of the criteria
o $50 for achieving two
o $75 for achieving three

HELP NEEDED EVENINGS BEFORE RODEOS
The board of directors appreciated the way club
members and families jump in to help as needed at
rodeos. A little more help is needed evenings prior
to family rodeos. The club will buy pizza and
beverages in 2012 for those who show up the
evening before (about 7 p.m. or so) to assist with
ground prep, any staking of patterns, roping off of
areas where parking is not allowed, etc. Stay tuned

CLUB HONORS 2011 SEASON CHAMPS
The Mandan Horse and Saddle Club honored
member contestants for 2011 season
achievements at a celebration held Jan. 14 at the
Seven Seas Inn, Mandan. Awards are based on
points earned at four rodeos held between June
and September. Champions are as follows:

AUCTION RAISES FUNDS FOR CLUB
Thank you to all who donated, bid on and
purchased items at the silent auction held at the
annual celebration. A total of $1,636.50 was raised
to help cover expenses for the evening (awards
and DJ) as well as the upcoming season.
Open Division

Jackets presented to event champions were
sponsored in part by Dakota Community Bank.
Brooke Peterson, Minot, was honored with the
Buddy Kahl Memorial Traveling "Beginner
Persistent Rider" Trophy. The trophy is presented
to the contestant in the age 9 and under division
who earns the most points during the season, yet
who did not win an all-around award at a rodeo.
Caydon Roshau was last years recipient.
Caydon Roshau received the Becky Fisher
Memorial Traveling Trophy as the contestant who
earned the most points in timed and game events.
Tammy Backhaus, was chosen by members to
receive the club's traveling Sportsmanship Award
for her volunteerism which has included serving as
club president for two years, entry coordinator for
2011, and organizing the clubs first junior high
school rodeo in 2011.
Club members also elected directors for the 2012
season as listed on the cover page.
