Once <strong>the</strong>y brought a young man to him, age 16. His mo<strong>the</strong>r told your<br />

gr<strong>and</strong>fa<strong>the</strong>r that her son w<strong>as</strong>n’t eating <strong>and</strong> w<strong>as</strong> losing weight. After<br />

examining him, he found nothing physically wrong with him. So he took<br />

<strong>the</strong> boy’s wrist in his h<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> started reciting names <strong>of</strong> girls. At a certain<br />

name, <strong>the</strong> boy’s pulse quickened. Your gr<strong>and</strong>fa<strong>the</strong>r told <strong>the</strong> boy’s mo<strong>the</strong>r,<br />

“Your son is in love, take him home <strong>and</strong> marry him to a girl named Jamila.”<br />

One year later, <strong>the</strong> boy came to thank your gr<strong>and</strong>fa<strong>the</strong>r <strong>and</strong> told him that<br />

he had named his first son Sa’id.<br />

After <strong>the</strong> m<strong>and</strong>ate ended <strong>and</strong> most <strong>of</strong> Palestine w<strong>as</strong> lost, my gr<strong>and</strong>fa<strong>the</strong>r lost his clinic<br />

in Bisan, <strong>the</strong>reafter investing all his time <strong>and</strong> energy in <strong>the</strong> one in Jenin. He decided<br />

not to get politically involved, <strong>and</strong> during <strong>the</strong> ‘50s <strong>and</strong> ‘60s lived a quiet life.<br />

Come to think <strong>of</strong> it, none <strong>of</strong> his ten children were involved or interested in politics.<br />

They were pr<strong>of</strong>essionals who minded <strong>the</strong>ir own business.<br />

Of Sa’id’s gr<strong>and</strong>children, it w<strong>as</strong> only me <strong>and</strong> my bro<strong>the</strong>r Sa’d who were politically<br />

active <strong>and</strong> repeat visitors to Israeli prisons. That w<strong>as</strong> mainly due to our mo<strong>the</strong>r, who<br />

made us recite by heart nationalist songs about Palestine (which were prohibited<br />

during <strong>the</strong> Jordanian period). It w<strong>as</strong> my mo<strong>the</strong>r’s ‘o<strong>the</strong>r’ history that made me<br />

underst<strong>and</strong> that <strong>the</strong>re are two kinds <strong>of</strong> history, <strong>the</strong> ‘<strong>of</strong>ficial version’ <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> history <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> people, which guided me to become an oral historian.<br />

In January 1970, my gr<strong>and</strong>fa<strong>the</strong>r died. His clinic in Jenin became a confectionary<br />

shop; his house w<strong>as</strong> turned into a clinic by ano<strong>the</strong>r doctor.<br />

But <strong>the</strong> people <strong>of</strong> Jenin say that <strong>the</strong>y still see at five in <strong>the</strong> morning every day, ghosts<br />

<strong>of</strong> 12 men wearing full suits <strong>and</strong> red fezzes, sitting in a circle on <strong>the</strong> pavement in front<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> clinic, smoking nargila.<br />

<strong>My</strong> fa<strong>the</strong>r-in-law, <strong>the</strong> policeman on guard in<br />

about <strong>the</strong> <strong>as</strong>s<strong>as</strong>sination <strong>and</strong> his own role in helping<br />
