Deep neck infection in Bhumibol Adulyadej Hospital<br />

Introduction: Deep neck infection (DNI) is a serious illness for patient and their families.<br />

Deep neck infection remain to be problematic in Bhumibol Adulyadej Hospital.<br />

Objectives: To find out incidence of inpatient disease with deep neck infection in<br />

department of otolaryngology - Bhumibol Adulyadej Hospital.<br />

Materials and Methods: We conducted a retrospective and descriptive study of 65<br />

inpatients with deep neck infection in department of otolaryngology, Bhumibol Adulyadej<br />

Hospital between January 2005 and June 2008<br />

Results: Deep neck infection occurred at any ages which peak incidence during 21-30<br />

year of age. Incidence rate of deep neck infection in department of otolaryngology,<br />

Bhumibol Adulyadej Hospital is 9.5%. More common in male than female about 2 time.<br />

Peritonsillar space was the most common(29.23 %) and submandibular space infection<br />

was the second most common (20%). The most common pathogen from culture was<br />

Klebsiella pneumoniae . Complication rate was 24.62% , airway distress was the most<br />

common complication and one patient died from sepsis with hospital acquired<br />

pneumonia.<br />

Conclusion: Deep neck infection continue to be problematic as encountered by<br />

otolaryngologist in diagnosis and treatment. Education about oral hygiene care and<br />

early to visiting the physician is importance to prevent morbidity and mortality rate. Early<br />

diagnosis and prompted treatment were the keys of success in treatment of these<br />

patients.<br />
