Abstract
Deep neck infection in Bhumibol Adulyadej Hospital

Introduction: Deep neck infection (DNI) is a serious illness for patient and their families.
Deep neck infection remain to be problematic in Bhumibol Adulyadej Hospital.
Objectives: To find out incidence of inpatient disease with deep neck infection in
department of otolaryngology - Bhumibol Adulyadej Hospital.
Materials and Methods: We conducted a retrospective and descriptive study of 65
inpatients with deep neck infection in department of otolaryngology, Bhumibol Adulyadej
Hospital between January 2005 and June 2008
Results: Deep neck infection occurred at any ages which peak incidence during 21-30
year of age. Incidence rate of deep neck infection in department of otolaryngology,
Bhumibol Adulyadej Hospital is 9.5%. More common in male than female about 2 time.
Peritonsillar space was the most common(29.23 %) and submandibular space infection
was the second most common (20%). The most common pathogen from culture was
Klebsiella pneumoniae . Complication rate was 24.62% , airway distress was the most
common complication and one patient died from sepsis with hospital acquired
pneumonia.
Conclusion: Deep neck infection continue to be problematic as encountered by
otolaryngologist in diagnosis and treatment. Education about oral hygiene care and
early to visiting the physician is importance to prevent morbidity and mortality rate. Early
diagnosis and prompted treatment were the keys of success in treatment of these
patients.
