Right to Learn<br />
Philosophical Basis:<br />
All students, in accordance with their age, grade level, and maturity, have the right to be involved in their<br />
education. Course selection and participation in school activities are an integral part <strong>of</strong> learning. <strong>Student</strong>s’<br />
opinions concerning course materials, content, and relevance are important and deserve analysis and<br />
consideration by educators.<br />
Rights:<br />
Responsibilities:<br />
• <strong>Student</strong>s have the right <strong>of</strong> access to clear<br />
curriculum descriptions that will help them make<br />
more informed choices.<br />
• <strong>Student</strong>s have the responsibility to seek clarification,<br />
if necessary, from informed persons in the school.<br />
• <strong>Student</strong>s have the right to participate in<br />
challenging, creative, academic programs at all<br />
levels in elementary, middle, and senior high<br />
schools.<br />
• <strong>Student</strong>s have the right to study all subjects<br />
under qualified instructors in an atmosphere free<br />
from bias and prejudice.<br />
• <strong>Student</strong>s have the responsibility to strive for<br />
academic growth by participating to their utmost<br />
ability.<br />
• <strong>Student</strong>s have the responsibility to contribute to the<br />
development <strong>of</strong> a positive climate in the school that<br />
is conducive to wholesome learning and living.<br />
• Secondary students have the right to<br />
representation on committees that participate in<br />
textbook selection and curriculum planning from<br />
individual school councils to district level.<br />
• <strong>Student</strong>s have the responsibility to respect the rights<br />
<strong>of</strong> others who have differing viewpoints, and<br />
become informed and knowledgeable about<br />
controversial issues.<br />
• <strong>Student</strong>s have the right <strong>of</strong> equal access to any<br />
extracurricular activity.<br />
• <strong>Student</strong>s have the responsibility to involve<br />
themselves in committees and enrich their classes<br />
through participation in implementation and<br />
evaluation.<br />
• <strong>Student</strong>s with disabilities may be entitled to<br />
special services.<br />
• <strong>Student</strong>s have the responsibility to request<br />
participation in any extracurricular activity.<br />
