[Coming for a short visit to Orissa, Pr. Jawaharlai Nehru unveiled
the statue of Madhu Babu in the premises of Sailabala Women's
College at Cuttack on 13th February, 1953. The following is an extract
of his speech delivered there ]
Madhusudan Das was a great man not only of Orissa but of
the whole India. I have been hearing his name for the last fifty years.
Though I had no opportunity to meet him directly yet I have seen
him from a distance. He was a very great friend of my father. During
this period whenever the affairs of Orissa came up for discussion and
consideration, the name of Madhusudan absorbed all this and came
into prominence. You all know all that he had done for Orissa. This
College( S.B. Women's College, Cuttack) is the proof of his far sight
and vision. If he had not moved for the progress of female education,
this institution could not have raised its head. The progress of
civilisation of a country is to be measured by Female Education.
