NOTE ON THE LIFE OF LATE
MADHUSUDAN DAS

I consider it a privilege to say a few words on the life of the
late Mr. Madhusudan Das, late Minister of the Local Self-Government
of the province of Bihar and Orissa.
I had the privilege of knowing Mr. Das both as an advocate
as well as a politician, because in both these capacities I had occasions
to work with him and against him, and in both these capacities I
felt sure of success when I worked with him, but my mind was far
from easy when I had to work against him in either of these capacities.
He was a great Indian patriot prepared to sacrifice all for the sake
of his principle and his people and on personal sacrifice he tried to
foster many Indian industries one of them, namely the Utkal Tannery,
may be prominently mentioned. He was noted for his political sagacity
and independence of thought. Fearless of all, unmindful of favours
and frowns he was a man of high principles. As a lawyer he was
noted for legal acumen and masterly advocacy. In private and social
life he was a most lovable creature and a most hospitable host. He
was a true Christian and religious to a fault. He was rightly known
as the grand old man of Orissa.
