These are a few relevant events in the life of Utkal Gaurab<br />
<strong>Madhusudan</strong> <strong>Das</strong>:<br />
1869-- Accepts Christianity at Calcutta defying his Hindu Karan<br />
father of an evanescent aristocratic house.<br />
1873-- Marries a Christian lady, passes his M. A.<br />
1878- His wife dies, he gets his B.L.<br />
1881- Returns to Cuttack as a vakil..<br />
1887-97--Gets into eminence as a lawyer -Puri Temple case (1<br />
lakh of Rupees fees), Keonjhar case (1 Lakh of rupees<br />
fees). Joins many associations for education and cultural<br />
purposes.<br />
1897- Sails for London, exhibition of Orissa filigree and<br />
handicrafts. Starting of Orissa Artware and Art School.<br />
1902- 1 lakh of Rupees spent away on the enterprise.<br />
1903- Utkal Sammilani- The most consuming idea and activity<br />
for him. The height of his glory.<br />
1905- Utkal Tannery as his own enterprise. Weaving with shuttle<br />
machine in his premises. At Salepur palmsugar making.<br />
1907- Second visit to London- address to the East India<br />
Association at London Town Hall on Industries in modem<br />
India.<br />
1909- Utkal Tannery in financial difficulties. Conversion into<br />
public Company with him as the Managing Director and<br />
Capital of the Company at Rs.2 lakhs.<br />
1921— The position worsens with heavy indebtedness to Cox &<br />
Co. Bankers, Calcutta. By now he becomes a minister of<br />
Bihar & Orissa, so severs all relationship with the<br />
enterprises.<br />
1923- The Company again registered with Rs. 8 lakhs as Capital<br />
with Rs. 10/- a share but without response in Orissa.<br />
1926- Company auctioned by Cox & Co.<br />
1927- Declared Insolvent.<br />
1931 - Freed from insolvency.<br />
These are a few important observations telling of his personality:<br />
I -- His great grandmother had sacrificed herself as 'Sati'. This<br />
he heard a number of times in his boyhood from his<br />
grandmother. And this he often recited with pride in
