there is no soul at all. Thus when <strong>Buddhist</strong>s say, "there<br />

is no soul," it means that in Buddhahood there is no soul,<br />

but for common persons there are "changeable souls"<br />

which carry their lives w<strong>and</strong>ering in transmigration.<br />

This "soul" is the eighth consciousness, which should be<br />

meditated away by sunyata samadhi to eventually<br />

become the wisdom of Buddhahood. Hence when one<br />

skillfully destroys delusions <strong>and</strong> discovers the true<br />

nature of consciousness, one should make practical<br />

progress in sunyata meditation. This is the fifth<br />

important stage of transmutation.<br />

Regarding the characteristics of sunyata, there are two<br />

aspects: one is its nature, like a mirror. The second is its<br />

manifestations, which are like reflections in the mirror.<br />

To accomplished bodhisattvas <strong>and</strong> to Buddhas, they are<br />

two in oneness, like two sides of one paper. However, to<br />

novices who do not have any realization of sunyata<br />

oneness, they should be considered <strong>and</strong> practiced<br />

separately.<br />

1. Meditating on Sunyata<br />

One should use the following methods. One should not<br />

worry about one's consciousness or mind or the objects<br />

outside the mind. Everything inside the mind or outside<br />

the consciousness is sunyata itself. It needs neither<br />

mentalization nor physical analysis. By this method, the<br />

consciousness is sublimated into Buddha-wisdom in<br />

one's nature. After this sublimation is meditated upon,<br />
