b. All the outside objects are held by subjective views,<br />

becoming very confined. The dharmas of form, called<br />

"material objects," appear to the human being as<br />

outward things. Actually, without mentality, there is<br />

nothing at all. It is as Confucius said: "When the mind is<br />

not present, we look <strong>and</strong> do not see; we hear <strong>and</strong> do not<br />

underst<strong>and</strong>; we eat <strong>and</strong> do not know the taste of what<br />

we eat."<br />

c. When forms are pursued <strong>and</strong> the beloved object<br />

cannot be acquired, or the disliked object cannot be<br />

ab<strong>and</strong>oned, humans not only feel sorrow, but also take<br />

action. This sows seeds of good or evil into the field of<br />

consciousness. When those seeds mature <strong>and</strong> sprout,<br />

they become either good or evil conduct, bringing<br />

appropriate karmic results—thus the seeds of<br />

transmigration have no end.<br />

7. The Fivefold Samapatti<br />

It must be emphasized that the only cure for the bad<br />

seeds <strong>and</strong> the only way to stop the cycle of<br />

transmigration is the practice of the fivefold samapatti<br />

of the real nature of consciousness, which destroys the<br />

delusion.<br />

a. The first stage of this fivefold meditation is getting<br />

rid of the delusions from outside objects <strong>and</strong> keeping<br />
