samatha, which is the instrument enabling us to see the<br />

truth clearly <strong>and</strong> purely; on the other h<strong>and</strong>, Buddha<br />

related his insight of the truth personally <strong>and</strong> without<br />

egoism or any obstacles to samapatti.<br />

The following truths, which the practitioner should<br />

gradually know, are the teachings only of Buddha's<br />

experience.<br />

D. How to Know the Consciousness Thoroughly <strong>and</strong><br />

Distinguish its True Nature from the False Ones<br />

First of all, one should know the consciousness in its<br />

whole system, which has been divided into nine parts<br />

according to its different functions.<br />

1. The ninth consciousness, emphasized in the Tantra,<br />

contains all the virtues <strong>and</strong> potentialities of Buddhahood.<br />

When one is Fully Enlightened, this consciousness<br />

becomes the totality of wisdom, without any sense of<br />

consciousness.<br />

2. The eighth consciousness, emphasized in the<br />

Mahayana, contains all seeds, good or bad, from which<br />

the other seven kinds of consciousness are formed.<br />

3. The seventh consciousness, which holds the eighth<br />

consciousness as one's self, is an object to be meditated<br />

away by sunyata samadhi.<br />
