eginning to practice the good dharmas one does not<br />

practice now, <strong>and</strong>, second, increasing the practice of<br />

those one does. (The other two are: not doing evil, <strong>and</strong><br />

stopping the evil that one has already done.)<br />

2. The Twenty-Six Evil Dharmas:<br />

The twenty-six are divided into two parts.<br />

First, the six root-evils:<br />

a. Covetousness<br />

b. Hatred<br />

c. Ignorance<br />

d. Arrogance<br />

e. Doubt<br />

f. False Views.<br />

These six may produce other evils because of their<br />

nature, which is the mother of all evil. One should<br />

forbid them in oneself most forcefully.<br />

Second, the twenty branch-evils:<br />

a. Anger<br />

b. Enmity<br />

c. Affliction<br />

d. Concealment<br />

e. Deception<br />

f. Flattery<br />

k. Shamelessness<br />

l. Non-shyness<br />

m. Unbelief<br />

n. Low-spiritedness<br />

o. Restlessness<br />

p. Sloth<br />
