"Its stool is a strong medicine, which can ward off all<br />

four-hundred-<strong>and</strong>-four diseases. When its stool is made<br />

into a holy pill <strong>and</strong> kept on one's body, the one myriad<br />

eight thous<strong>and</strong> calamities will never befall the bearer.<br />

When it is mixed with oil, the stool will cure any kind<br />

of sore."<br />

"Anyone who eats the meat of a Jue Xun after its death<br />

will gain worldly things, while one who offers one of its<br />

feathers may attain the excellent achievement of<br />

Buddhahood. One who sees it or hears it will not fall<br />

from practice. All the people who live in the forest of<br />

s<strong>and</strong>alwood trees where the bird lives will never be<br />

reborn in the three lower realms."<br />

"This kind of holy bird is very rare. If one's merits are<br />

not great enough, one cannot encounter it. It preaches to<br />

bees <strong>and</strong> other insects, thus helping them to attain a<br />

good rebirth in the heavens."<br />

"When the chicks grow up, they fly far away <strong>and</strong> never<br />

return—a kind of renunciation. They build their own<br />

'hermitage' <strong>and</strong> when the female lays her two eggs, they<br />

then fly away, <strong>and</strong> they don't build hermitage again.<br />

This is their traditional habit. Even the young chicks are<br />

rare to see, even by those persons free of sins."<br />
