of the sixth consciousness (as the Idealist school<br />

asserts).<br />

Traditionally, this process was never imparted by the<br />

ancients. However, when one corner of a subject is<br />

shown, the other three corners may be inferred. In the<br />

samadhi of the second form, the Buddha might call to<br />

the meditator: "Without the attainment of vajra-mind,<br />

you are incapable of saving sentient beings."<br />

This is the end of the connection between the second<br />

<strong>and</strong> the third forms.<br />

After the samapatti in which the vajra-form has been<br />

clearly visualized in the heart in its original size, that of<br />

one's own fist with the thumb pointing upward, one<br />

should practice enlarging it to the size of one's body,<br />

hermitage, the sky, <strong>and</strong> the Dharmadhatu. This sequence<br />

has been established through the writer's experience<br />

with the following reasons:<br />

1. The Chinese term "Xin" (as we saw earlier) has many<br />

meanings: physically, it denotes the heart;<br />

psychologically, the mind or will; geometrically, the<br />

center; spiritually, the soul or consciousness;<br />

philosophically, essence or truth. Its meaning depends<br />

on context <strong>and</strong> should be carefully discriminated. To<br />

integrate one's thought with the whole truth, one should<br />

take the word as a whole with all its implications.<br />

However, for other occasions, it should devote its<br />
