Passing a slaughterhouse, do not merely be disgusted,<br />

but develop the mind of great compassion for all the<br />

dead, dying <strong>and</strong> terrified animals in that place.<br />

28. Passing a Graveyard<br />

If one passes a graveyard or cremation ground, several<br />

things may be done. First, develop the thought of<br />

impermanence, which one must learn to accept—<strong>and</strong><br />

from which one has to learn not to flinch. Then, for<br />

one's own protection, a mantra may be used. Finally, for<br />

the benefit of beings departed but still lingering in ghost<br />

form, practice phowa for them.<br />

When I first came to Calcutta, <strong>and</strong> was waiting to obtain<br />

a pass, I stayed near the Chinese cemetery <strong>and</strong> saw<br />

many neglected graves there. Because there was no<br />

Chinese monk living in the city, many had died without<br />

having a religious ritual performed for them. So for<br />

three weeks I lived among the graves <strong>and</strong>, spending my<br />

own money, performed the pujas <strong>and</strong> practiced chod<br />

(offering all of oneself to the hungry ghosts, etc. See<br />

29. Seeing Birds<br />

Seeing birds fly through the air is a reminder for us <strong>and</strong><br />

we should ask ourselves: "How can we make our<br />

sunyata meditations as perfect as those of Milarepa,<br />
