not connected with religion, then we may easily gain<br />

many merits.<br />

21. Using Words<br />

In ordinary life, it is usual to have contact with many<br />

other people. With others, we should always use good<br />

words <strong>and</strong> never those that are deceitful or might lead to<br />

quarrels.<br />

22. Doing Good<br />

If one gets a chance to do some good, then use that<br />

opportunity to the greatest extent. Whereas <strong>Buddhist</strong>s<br />

are inclined to weigh up the ensuing merits from good<br />

deeds, the followers of Confucius keep a check on the<br />

good deeds themselves <strong>and</strong> say at the end of the day: "I<br />

have done these good things today." Both are good<br />

ways.<br />

23. Stopping Killing<br />

If one meets a person about to kill an animal, one must<br />

try with all one's power to stop him from doing so <strong>and</strong><br />

thus save that creature's life, also prolonging one's own<br />

life.<br />
