To repeat a mantra <strong>and</strong> to visualize in this way is a<br />

small thing to do but indeed has great results in saving<br />

others. It is possible to use the mantra of any yidam for<br />

this purpose.<br />

17. In a City<br />

When one passes through the streets of a city, many<br />

beautiful things are to be seen, such as gorgeous objects<br />

or luscious foods. If a greedy thought arises in the mind,<br />

think: "These things are too good for me <strong>and</strong> should be<br />

offered to the Buddha." Maintain at this time the mind<br />

of renunciation.<br />

If one can meditate in the Mahayana way, one may see<br />

all these material objects as shadows. This may be done<br />

very nicely in the case of clothing shops, where the live<br />

owner <strong>and</strong> his plastic dummies may sometimes be seen<br />

side by side. Depending on the force of one's meditative<br />

power, one may see both the live person <strong>and</strong> the models<br />

quite clearly as shadows.<br />

18. Meeting Old People<br />

When one meets with an old or dying person, think as<br />

the Buddha did: "These are all signs offered to me by<br />

the gods, as reminders that one day I will also die." If a<br />

meditator practicing the Vajrayana comes to a dead or<br />
