These are the three main principles of practice, <strong>and</strong> our<br />

discussion of daily life yoga must be harmonized with<br />

<strong>and</strong> guided by them. Without a thorough realization of<br />

these principles, talk about daily life yoga is foolishness.<br />

B. Practice<br />

Under this section we can only show a few examples<br />

selected from each of the three yanas. A meditator who<br />

follows the whole system of this book will find that<br />

conditions change, even from day to day, so that he will<br />

only be able to practice the different principles<br />

progressively. Therefore, we cannot lay down any<br />

"wooden" rule for these examples <strong>and</strong> we should<br />

emphasize that in their practice constant reassessment<br />

<strong>and</strong> flexibility are required.<br />

First, then, we introduce a mixture of the principles of<br />

the three yanas in the three positions <strong>and</strong> after that give<br />

examples of daily life yoga in Chan.<br />

1. Waking Up<br />

When preparing to get up, the first step is to awaken the<br />

mind. This is the main thing necessary for without it one<br />

will never rise. If one practices the Vajrayana, many<br />

dakinis with damarus (small h<strong>and</strong>-drums) may be heard<br />

calling out to one with loud voices. If one is a<br />
