4. A meditator should know very exactly what his or her<br />

position in the three yanas of Buddhism is. What is he<br />

or she able to practice, the Hinayana, Mahayana, or<br />

Vajrayana? One must examine oneself carefully <strong>and</strong><br />

without any self-deception decide exactly which yana's<br />

meditations are suitable, <strong>and</strong> one will then know one's<br />

meditation position.<br />

5. According to one's meditation position, one should<br />

develop a central thought:<br />

a. If one is in a position to practice Hinayana, then one<br />

should establish a central thought of Hinayana, that is,<br />

one centering on impermanence, renunciation, the<br />

precepts, <strong>and</strong> the non-self of persons. These four are<br />

most important for establishing this central<br />

thought—<strong>and</strong> with it nothing conflicting or worldly<br />

should be mixed. One's daily life then centers upon <strong>and</strong><br />

is guided by this.<br />

b. If one is very skilled in the Hinayana, one should<br />

progress into Mahayana. Then one should make the<br />

sublimation in Mahayana meditation into his central<br />

thought. Such a person must:<br />

i. Try to meditate on the sunyata of Dharmakaya <strong>and</strong><br />

thereby recognize that there is no difference between<br />

oneself <strong>and</strong> others, love <strong>and</strong> hate, right <strong>and</strong> wrong, or<br />

good <strong>and</strong> evil. All these are in the sunyata of<br />
