d. A False Guru:<br />

i. One who knows the Hinayana Tipitaka (for instance a<br />

monk of the Theravada), but who at the same time<br />

rebukes the Mahayana. Such is a kind of false guru <strong>and</strong><br />

not a Hinayana guru in the sense of our book, not a<br />

Hinayana-in-triyana teacher!<br />

ii. Next is one who recognizes both the sutras of the<br />

Hinayana <strong>and</strong> of the Mahayana but criticizes the<br />

esoteric Vajrayana. He is also a false guru, according to<br />

our whole system.<br />

iii. Following from the last is one who knows the three<br />

yanas but speaks harshly about Chan—he is again false.<br />

Mr. Chen then recognized that language difficulties<br />

have in the past been responsible for many<br />

misunderst<strong>and</strong>ings between different schools.<br />

"Now," he said, "there are many translations <strong>and</strong><br />

this excuse is hardly valid any longer. Despite this,<br />

our age has many false gurus of the above three<br />

types <strong>and</strong> it is indeed difficult to find a real one."<br />

iv. The last knows the three yanas <strong>and</strong> has a knowledge<br />

of Chan but his defect is to keep some "Mouth Chan."<br />

For lack of realization in this respect, we must also label<br />
