i. He has the Great Compassion of the Same Entity.<br />

ii. He has made great vows.<br />

iii. He does every good thing without becoming tired.<br />

iv. He possesses courage <strong>and</strong> perseverance.<br />

v. He likes to guide disciples.<br />

vi. He is skilled in explaining the Dharma-teaching of<br />

sunyata <strong>and</strong> knows both its nature <strong>and</strong> conditions.<br />

vii. Also, he has skill in discussion to subdue the<br />

outsiders.<br />

viii. He has written some books according to right view<br />

<strong>and</strong> his own experience.<br />

ix. He has carefully <strong>and</strong> thoroughly read Hinayana <strong>and</strong><br />

Mahayana sutras <strong>and</strong> their commentaries (in both<br />

Chinese <strong>and</strong> Tibetan collections).<br />

x. He knows well the facts relating to at least two<br />

countries (to enable him to preach the Dharma<br />

effectively).<br />

Mr. Chen exclaimed, "You have them all!" At which<br />

both listener <strong>and</strong> transcriber protested.<br />

c. Conditions of a capable Vajrayana guru:<br />

i. He has accumulated the first two yanas' conditions but<br />

may not completely maintain them.<br />

ii. He has the initiation <strong>and</strong> tradition of both the old<br />

(Nyingmapa, Sakyapa, etc.) <strong>and</strong> the new sect (Gelugpa)<br />

of Tibet.<br />

iii. He has the great bodhicitta with special knowledge<br />

of the fifth bodhicitta.<br />
