d. Dharmapala: In the histories of the various deities<br />

preserved in sutra-form, we find recorded the vows of<br />

different gods to protect the yidams. The latter may<br />

have more than one protector.<br />

Additionally, four things must be known in the Tantra<br />

<strong>and</strong> their importance recognized:<br />

a. Root of Bestowal (initiation, wang, abhiseka): This is<br />

the guru.<br />

b. Root of Achievement or Accomplishment: This is the<br />

yidam.<br />

c. Root of Sunyata <strong>and</strong> Bliss: This is the dakini. This is<br />

most important—I have always emphasized this! First<br />

one should make oneself like the dakini (through<br />

visualization) <strong>and</strong> then the yidam will quickly be<br />

attracted. It is the same as among human beings! The<br />

dakini, representing prajna, is like the mother of truth<br />

(Prajnaparamita herself) <strong>and</strong> without this quality, how<br />

can one realize sunyata? It is therefore very important to<br />

know how to make the dakini happy. In my essay on<br />

this subject, I have made a special point-by-point<br />

worship of her "physical" body. Most hymns only praise<br />

her spiritual qualities <strong>and</strong> heavenly symbolic ornaments<br />

but the root of pleasure is in the physical body <strong>and</strong><br />

sunyata alone can penetrate it. Thus these two factors<br />
