In the Hinayana, these may be called "samadhi," for the<br />

Buddha was using the Brahmanical terms which his<br />

listeners might underst<strong>and</strong>. Our book, however, is<br />

according to the teachings of the S<strong>and</strong>hinirmocana Sutra,<br />

which has settled all these states <strong>and</strong> their names in a<br />

very good order, though this sutra is predominantly<br />

idealist in its exposition. In Maitreya's sastras, the same<br />

principle is followed as in the Lord's teachings in this<br />

sutra.<br />

6. Are all visualizations of deities in the<br />

anuttarayoga connected with the first initiation?<br />

Yes, the main practice of the first initiation of<br />

anuttarayoga is visualization, though in the third yoga,<br />

visual practices are also found.<br />

In the first initiation, the visualization is "outside"; in<br />

the second it is "inside" <strong>and</strong> may be a dakini but not in<br />

the double (heruka) form; while in the third initiation<br />

practice, the visualized form is always in yogic union.<br />

There are four main practices in Vajrayana:<br />

mantra-repetition, visualization, deep-breathing, <strong>and</strong><br />

Mahamudra. According to these four, in the first<br />
