d. May I discourse to the five kinds of sentient beings<br />

(gods, men, hungry ghosts, animals, <strong>and</strong> hell-beings),<br />

thereby cutting off for them the current of repeated birth<br />

by freeing them from ignorance.<br />

Avalokitesvara, Manjusri, <strong>and</strong> Bhaisajyaguru all made<br />

vows when they were in the Position of Cause. Further,<br />

there is a sutra, the Karuna Pundarika, in which many<br />

vows are gathered, so our readers may first consult this<br />

<strong>and</strong> then get some ideas of suitable subjects for the<br />

formation of vows. Nagarjuna has also made his ten<br />

vows in Middle Way Sastra (Mulamadhyamaka-shastra).<br />

These I have read <strong>and</strong> appreciate very much.<br />

The four boundless minds are included in every ritual<br />

<strong>and</strong> are a kind of vow; they are:<br />

May all sentient beings gain happiness with its<br />

causes,<br />

Be parted from all grief with its causes,<br />

Not become parted from the happiness wherein no<br />

grief is,<br />

And dwell in the condition of Equanimity.<br />

Besides these, there are the five common vows which<br />

are very important:<br />
